Red nails are a versatile option for almost any nail shape and length. It is perfect for both everyday wear and bright festive looks. There are many techniques for applying various types of coatings, but the color red remains one of the most popular to this day.

Features of stylistics

There are many shades of red: cherry, wine, berry, mahogany and scarlet. Not all of them are suitable for a particular nail shape, length, and design. For owners of short fingers, it is best to stop at more juicy shades of ripe berries and reddish shades of autumn foliage. The same should be done for those who prefer to cut and file the nail short. These colors visually lengthen the nail and finger, make it narrower and more accurate.

Long nails, on the other hand, should be covered with colder and darker shades to remove some of the vulgarity of bright red varnish. In this case, the shape of the nail can be either square or with rounded edges. Red lacquer stands out on its own and can compete with a lot of jewelry, even if it is made of precious metals.

One of the common tricks used by professionals for the selection of the ideal red shade, is the selection of varnish according to the skin tone of the girl.

  • For light and pale skin, the classic scarlet, raspberry or cherry shade is perfect, as well as all cold shades of red. This contrast will accentuate the hands and make them visually more well-groomed and neat.
  • For owners of a bronze tan or for swarthy girls, on the contrary, warm shades with a golden or orange tint are suitable.Coral or chestnut shades of varnish will look good, but warm shades of red and plum will look great in everyday wear.
  • Burgundy is best suited for dark-skinned beauties, and red-haired girls will be delighted with manicure in tomato shades.

Before you paint your nails red, you need to do a high-quality manicure and carefully file the edge of the nail. If the nail plate is uneven, has bumps or dents, it is best to pre-polish it with a mild buff and apply a base coat with gel or colorless varnish.

To prevent the bright color from chipping and fading as long as possible, it can be fixed with various topcoats or sprays. Do not try to paint over a single damaged area of the varnish. If the varnish begins to chip or wear off, then it is necessary to completely repaint the nail.

Technique types

Today, there are several options for nail polish. They include:

  • regular varnish that lasts for 2-7 days;
  • gel that is removed or corrected as the nail grows (1-2 times a month);
  • gel polish, which is a kind of compromise between ordinary thin polish and strong gel; this option is worn for about 3-4 weeks, but somewhat thinner than the usual gel and more fragile.

Regardless of what kind of coating is chosen for a manicure, the final result depends on the technique of its application. This technique is chosen taking into account the preferences of the client and the capabilities of the master performing the manicure. They can mix and complement each other, several nails can be decorated in one design, and several in another.

  • French. With this staining technique, the nail is covered with a lighter, transparent or matte shade of varnish. The “smile” zone along the edge of the plate is painted with a brighter, more contrasting or brilliant color. The border between the two shades can be emphasized with various decorative elements. The only drawback of this technique is its great popularity. In any team or in any company there will be at least a couple of girls with a similar manicure.
  • Lunar. This design is similar to the technique of French manicure, only the upper edge of the nail - its "hole", stands out in a different shade, not the lower, but the upper edge of the nail. This option is a little more difficult to do, but there are many auxiliary tools and devices, for example, adhesive stencils, which will help to make lunar cover both at a professional and at home.
  • Ombre. The word "ombre" comes from the French for "shading" and means a smooth transition from a lighter color to a darker one. Such a gradient, made on both long and short nails, in bright colors looks unusual and festive even without additional decorations. Calmer shades will allow you to create an option for everyday wear to work or school. It is more difficult to make it at home, but with a little practice, you can quite quickly cope with this simple art quite quickly.
  • Cat's eye. Such a manicure is almost impossible to do with an ordinary gel or varnish; a special magnetic coating is required, which, when a magnet is brought to it, forms a strip of a lighter shade in a certain part of the nail. The cat's eye looks unusual both on its own and in combination with other staining techniques. It is very easy to do with a special varnish and a small elongated magnet, which are often sold as a set.
  • Water. For this application technique, one or more colored varnishes are dripped into a container of water to create a thin colored film. The finger is immersed in water, the nail plate is placed under this film, after which the nail rises with it. Excess varnish is erased from the skin, and a thin film with beautiful stains is covered with a finish.
  • Lace. This technique involves painting the nail through lace fabric, creating a characteristic pattern called "veil". In some cases, a piece of thin lace itself is placed under the colorless coating, which remains on the nail for the entire period of wear.

The technique is quite complex, requires some experience and is often done in professional salons.

  • Stamping. This option requires a special seal and some engraved metal plates. Varnish is applied to the pattern in large quantities to fill in all the small details, and the excess is removed with a special plate. The finished pattern is transferred to the print, after which the print is applied to the painted or natural nail. Thus, the pattern moves from the metal to the nail plate.
  • Brush drawings. Experts with extensive experience can create a real picture even on the little finger nail. It all depends on the client's requests and the capabilities of the master himself.

Actual trends

This year, the manicure of many models at various shows was decorated in red colors. In various catalogs and fashion magazines, you can also often find bright scarlet or wine shades on oval and square nails. The design itself is distinguished by a variety of small details and unexpected combinations.

  • Flowers of various shades on a red background are a real find for lovers of natural motives in the image. Such flowers can be combined with the tone of the main coating, or they can act as a bright contrasting detail.
  • Geometric patterns can visually lengthen or narrow the nails, make their shape more rounded or, conversely, sharper.
  • Metallic coatings created using various powder rubbers can only compete in popularity with matte and velvety coatings.
  • A super-topical covering that imitates knitting of a sweater or scarf is perfect for the cold season. Firstly, the thickness of the coating will protect thin and brittle nails even in the most severe frost. Secondly, such a manicure looks very warm and cozy, especially in combination with woolen sweaters and dresses, the pattern on which is similar to the design of nails.
  • Modeling. A voluminous manicure with large details remains in fashion, however, unlike previous seasons, it has become more "wearable". Huge flowers and figures are a thing of the past, giving way to quieter relief patterns.
  • For a long time there has been and remains an original hand-painted design, which can be either in a very laconic form or in the form of small but very detailed drawings. It can be either simple monograms made of contrasting varnish, or drawings on five nails that combine into a whole picture.

Combination of colors

The red color is quite capricious in combination with others, it likes to lead and contrast. There are several classic and safe options for this combination.

  • Black and red coating - the most classic of all. Suitable for the nail plate of any shape and length. Easily tolerates coverage imperfections and gradients. Looks festive and very festive, so it may not be suitable for everyday wear.
  • Red and white combination calmer and softer, but looks better on long nails than short ones. This kind of finish requires more attention to detail, but will look good with additional embellishments. The thinner the lines of the contrasting color, the easier the nail looks.
  • Shades of gold and scarlet often found in manicure timed to any celebration. Gold looks best in the form of decorative lines and patterns, and red looks best in the form of the base layer. You should not wear silver jewelry with this nail design, as it will contrast with the gold color of the patterns.
  • Silver and redlike the previous combination, it is successful, but more calm and everyday. It is moderately bright and at the same time laconic, especially if only one finger on the hand is highlighted with silver.

Less traditional, but also successful are combinations of red with blue and beige shades. A bright option for a special occasion can be a scarlet manicure with shiny or metallic elements. You should not combine red with green, yellow and pink, they will be lost against its background.

Beautiful examples

  • The combination of two or more shades of the same color allows you to emphasize the neat shape and length of the nails. The gradient looks calm and casual, and the lace patterns add grace to even the simplest office suit.
  • Not everyone will agree to such contrasting combinations. But they will emphasize not only the courage, but also the delicate taste of the girl.
  • Short nails look great with a coat of wine or cold crimson. Moreover, the shorter the nail, the darker the color of the varnish should be.
