In the last decade, Montenegro has gained immense popularity among domestic beach lovers. Most of those wishing to relax on the Adriatic Sea coast arrive at the airport of Tivat, but it is not the main resort of the country - the main tourist flow is directed to Budva. If you are one of those tourists who can save money by refusing the services of a travel company, you should try to fly in and book a hotel yourself, but then you should figure out in advance how you can get from Tivat to Budva.

Distance

Montenegro is a small country, in principle there are no large distances here, therefore Budva is not far from Tivat - only about 25 kilometers to it. However, you cannot walk them, and with suitcases - even more so, so you need to come up with something more suitable.

It is important for a traveler to correctly calculate not only the distance, but also the time that can be spent on its overcoming. A bus that makes intermediate stops on the route from Tivat to Budva will take a good 40 minutes, and a taxi, of course, will ride with a breeze in 20-25 minutes, but the first option will certainly cost a tourist less.

Whichever mode of transport you decide to get to, there are subtleties everywhere.

Buses

Since you are left without a transfer organized by a travel agency, the cheapest way to get from Tivat to Budva will be a passenger bus. The schedule of this transport may be subject to periodic changes, but in general, buses between the two cities run from about 5.20 a.m. to 20.40 - at least in 2018 this was the case. Besides, there is usually an even earlier flight on Saturday, leaving at 4.50 am.

The interval for buses on this route is about half an hour, but on weekends, due to the increased demand, a couple more flights are added, which is why the interval is reduced.

A ticket is usually purchased from a driver or a conductor; the fare between the two indicated points is approximately 2-3 euros per person.

In contrast to our reality, loading suitcases into the luggage compartment requires a separate payment, amounting to another 1 euro.

Tivat airport is located just one and a half kilometers from the city center, about a kilometer from the bus station, and, as you understand, it is also not quite in the center anymore. In the city, you will have to get to it in any case, but if you want to get directly to Budva from the airport, please note that the stop is much closer. The route from Tivat to Budva runs literally 100 meters from the passenger terminal, you need to walk several hundred meters along it - and you will see a characteristic "fungus".

To go to Budva, you don't even have to cross the road from the airport, but keep in mind that the bus itself does not stop, even if it sees passengers - you need to "vote".

Experienced visitors to Montenegro note that buses in general are ready to stop without a designated stop, so if you see transport catching up with you, try to slow down.

Please note that most buses will suit you, but not all. Since the largest international airport of Montenegro is located in Tivat, an important highway runs from it across the country, on which Budva lies, but this does not mean that all buses go to it, and not further. Accordingly, Budva itself may not be remembered in the name of the flight, if it is not the final destination, but a passing bus could give you a lift.

At the same time, the only destination options that are definitely not suitable for you are Kotor, Herce Novi and Igalo.

It should also be noted commercial shuttles, similar to a bus, but distinguished for the better by the level of comfort provided. The advantage of such a shuttle is the increased travel speed due to fewer stops, there is a lot of space in the cabin, and the seats are comfortable. However, there are also a lot of disadvantages to this solution - you will have to stomp on foot for half an hour from the airport to their station, the interval of movement does not exceed once every 2-3 hours, and the cost is higher - up to 4 euros per trip.

Taxi

This is another very popular option that allows you to get to your destination in the shortest possible time, because there will be no intermediate stops on the route. Practice shows that for large companies ordering a car will not cost much more than travel by bus, besides this option is good if the booked hotel is off the public transport routes.

There are a lot of taxi services here, and some of them are so focused on foreign tourists that they accept orders even in popular messengers, so you can pre-order a transfer from the airport without even leaving your home. For example, you can pay attention to the following firms:

  • Terrae taxi it is considered one of the cheapest options, because even at the peak of the season you will be dropped off in Budva for about 15 euros, and out of season the trip will cost a couple more euros less;
  • Intui Travel known as a middle-class operator of comfort - these will ask for a good 20 euros for a transfer, but they have better cars themselves, and even have free Wi-Fi in their cars;
  • KiwiTaxi is more expensive than most competitors, where the price for a trip to Budva can cost up to 25 euros, but the car fleet is the best, and the drivers arrive almost instantly, while the average waiting time for a newly called taxi is 10 minutes.

By the way, many good hotels in Budva, even at the stage of booking a room, offer to include an airport transfer in the price.It is difficult to say how profitable it is (it all depends on the conditions of a particular hotel), but what is convenient is unambiguous: by the time the plane arrives, a person with a nameplate is already waiting for you at the airport, who will pick up and take guests straight to the address, and you will not have to pay extra.

Moreover, many hotels a priori include the service in the room price, so you can deceive yourself by giving up the opportunity.

What seasoned travelers pay attention to is that free taxis already standing near the airport are extremely unprofitable. These drivers take advantage of the ignorance of the arrivals, and you can easily pay 60 euros for a trip to Budva during the peak season. Instead, you should order a taxi through the official websites (each local carrier has them) - then the price will be modest and fixed, and you can choose various options, such as the cabin capacity (for a large company), the availability of air conditioning and other characteristics.

Rent a car

If you are an independent traveler, it might make sense to rent a car. Thanks to her, you can see any, even the most remote sights at any time convenient for you. As in the case of a taxi, such a service can be ordered in advance, using the website of one or another company, but the issue can be resolved on the spot, since the corresponding service is provided even by the Tivat airport itself.

On some sites you can see quite reasonable prices for compact cars, which start literally from 9 euros per day, but you should always carefully read the conditions. So, some owners require additional payment for the delivery of the car to the airport, it may be specially paid for the fact that at the end you will leave the transport not where you took it. In a word, it is better to focus on the price range of 25-30 euros - this will also allow you to consider the most comfortable and convenient car models.

Even taking into account fuel costs, this option can be good for a family or a group of young people who want to see everything - you will save about the same money on paying for excursions.

The documents are drawn up relatively simply and quickly - the locals understand that it is important for a tourist to urgently resolve all issues with the movement, and not lose half of the vacation in bureaucratic delays. Representatives of car rental companies usually have a prepared package of documents so that neither side has additional questions and the papers can be signed almost immediately.

An important point is that you pay even for the idle time of a rented car, because if you do take it, you should use it intensively... For this reason, it makes no sense to take a car in order to just drive from Tivat to Budva and back in a week of vacation. There are excellent bus connections between these two cities, and Tivat itself is located as if in a corner, so it often makes sense to rent a car already in Budva itself, which can also be reached by public transport.

Budva itself is much closer to the center of the country, therefore it is wiser to start sightseeing tours in different parts of Montenegro from here.
