Mogren beach in Budva (Montenegro)
Popular for holidays in Montenegro is the Mogren beach, which is located in the city of Budva, located in the central part of the country's coast. This ancient city is not only a landmark of the Adriatic coast, but also a valuable historical monument. The land of the so-called black mountains, which sounds like Montenegro in Latin - all this is the beautiful country of Montenegro, which is located on the Balkan Peninsula. Rest in the magnificent resort of the Adriatic Sea among the picturesque nature attracts many tourists from all over the world.
Fabulous paradise
Already in itself, the city of Budva is a unique place for recreation. Many sights preserve long-term historical heritage, which you should definitely familiarize yourself with. Old town, embankment, Citadel, museums, Slavyansky Boulevard, Top Hill nightclub, water park, old library and many other places, will allow you to plunge headlong into the Budva resort life.
Heading to the Mogren resort, you cannot ignore Old town of Budva, which contains many historical monuments of the Venetian architecture of the Mediterranean. The old town was founded in the 15th century and was located on a coastal spit leading into the sea. The historic city center is surrounded on all sides by strong walls made of solid stone. Today it is a real open-air museum, behind the walls of which many artifacts are preserved; their search continues to this day.
Old Budva with its narrow streets and red-tile houses on the roofs annually welcomes guests of all nationalities.
The hospitable city provides an opportunity for everyone to visit the magnificent Adriatic coast - Mogren. Mogren Beach consists of two bays Mogren I and Mogren II, located in the northern part of the city and separated by a rock. This place is the most romantic and main attraction of Budva. It is located on the southeastern part of the coast, 2 kilometers from the Old Town, among multi-layered rocks, ancient buildings and stunning panoramas.
The landscapes of Mogren are very beautiful, the road leading to them is especially impressive. On the left, sea waves beat against a small cliff, and on the right, steep rocks hang. In order to approach the coastal area, you need to walk along a narrow path through a small grotto. All along the way, one can see the beautiful landscapes of the Old Town and the island of St. Nicholas.
Popular excursion object - uninhabited island of St. Nicholas (local name "Hawaii" or "School") is located 1 km from Old Budva and is perfectly visible from the coast of the Mogren beaches. The total length of the island is 840 m, these include 3 large sandy beaches and many small ones located around, which can only be reached by boat.
The water in the coastal area of Budva is very warm and clean, through which you can see the pebble and sandy bottom. For this feature in 2004 Mogren Beach was marked with the Blue Flag. Mogren Beach occupies a special place among the objects of the Budva Riviera - it is protected by a mountain range from the bustle of the city. Breathtaking landscapes, water blue and warm sandy shore will not leave anyone indifferent.
Montenegrin legislation allows sun loungers to occupy only 50% of the coastal zone, which makes it possible for people to sit comfortably on the sand or their own rugs without paying for the rent of a sun lounger.
History of the name
The resort of Mogren owes its name to the Spanish navigator Mogrini, who was shipwrecked near these places and was thrown ashore on this beach. Also, according to local legends, the same sailor built a church named after the Roman Catholic Saint Anthony of Padua on the seashore.
Unfortunately, it has not survived to this day, since after the Second World War it was demolished by the communist authorities. Today, a cozy cafe is located on the site of the church.
Path to the beach
The most convenient way to get to the Mogren beach is on foot, since by car you can only get closer to Budva along the road number 2 through Obilaznica.
There are two paths to get to the beach on foot:
- along the sea surface leading from the Old Town is a tourist road;
- from the old fort Mogren - this is a road for extreme travelers.
The trail to the beach starts in the north of the Old Budva square. The square has an entrance gate, behind which a narrow path for pedestrians begins. This trail offers a magnificent view of the Old Town and the beach of Richard's Head, named after the actor Richard Widmark, who played the main role in the film filmed on this stretch of the Budva coast in 1963.
Walking along the sheer cliffs, you can see a monument to a sophisticated ballerina or gymnast. However, no one knows the exact name of this statue and its history. One thing is for sure - this is an image of love, faith, hope and a symbol of Budva. Skirting powerful stone cliffs, the road enters the first cove, where Old Budva looks great from this angle. There is also Mogren I.
Along a narrow path leading to a tunnel, you can go inside the cliff and go to the next beach - Mogren II. The path to the second beach is very narrow and sometimes slippery and flooded with water. Moving along it, you should be careful and attentive. From the far part of the coast of Mogren II, the path to the rocks begins - it is more difficult and dangerous.
The total length of the beaches is 400 m, the entrance to the territory is free, only the rent of a sun lounger is paid. The beach has all the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable pastime. Comparing the beaches of Mogren I and Mogren II, it can be noted that the first beach is much more equipped for tourist or family holidays with children. There are cafeterias, a fresh shower, a toilet, and changing rooms. The coast is smoother, sandy and pebble. Boat and catamaran rental services are also available on the beach.
Mogren II beach has a more rocky shore. Because of the difficult road, here you can rarely see vacationers with children and there are fewer comfortable conditions for recreation than on the neighboring beach. The coastal zone of Mogren II is strewn with coarse sand and pebbles, and in the far part there is a rocky path to a steep cliff. You should use comfortable shoes to move in this direction and be very careful.
Overcoming obstacles made of stones and finding yourself on the top of the cliff, you can enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Old Budva and the sheer cliffs. From this point, the so-called secret path begins, leading to the ancient fortress Mogren, erected in 1860 at the direction of the Austro-Hungarian authorities.
