Folding corner sofas are elements of the interior of everyday use, so most people, when choosing them, pay attention only to proven, well-known models. The modern furniture market offers a wide range of various design products made in original styles with universal transformation mechanisms. Before buying such furniture, it is important to consider all the features and differences of the modifications.

Features, advantages and disadvantages

Before purchasing a corner sofa, it is important to foresee exactly how and where it will be used, whether it is planned to move it. Each room - living room, kitchen, corridor or restroom - needs its own corner sofa. Models differ not only in appearance or design, but also have different designs of transformation mechanisms.

Many types of products require additional space when unfolding.

In general, the corner sofa has many advantages:

  • a universal corner allows you to install furniture on both the left and right side;
  • in the unfolded state it is a full-fledged sleeping place for 2-3 people, and some structures can accommodate up to 5 people;
  • has reliable transformation mechanisms designed for frequent use, daily operation;
  • during production, durable wear-resistant materials of the frame, sheathing, filling are mainly used;
  • it is possible to purchase a product with different types of upholstery, frame and filler.

The main disadvantage of corner sofas is considered to be their cumbersomeness, limited placement options. But in these cases, if it is necessary to periodically rearrange, change the arrangement of furniture, it is recommended to purchase prefabricated models - where the corner and main parts are disconnected from each other.

Among the disadvantages is the high cost of such upholstered furniture, especially products made from natural materials or handmade... But with careful handling, the sofa will last a long time - more than 15 years - subject to periodic preventive maintenance: minor repairs, hauling, replacing the filler.

Transformation mechanisms

The choice of a modern corner sofa is not just a solution to a design problem in the interior, but also the purchase of a multifunctional product, which will have high requirements in terms of wear resistance and durability. Therefore, one should take into account both the external qualities of upholstered furniture, materials of manufacture, and design possibilities. There are three main types of corner sofas transformation mechanisms.

Roll-out

Sofas with roll-out transformation systems are highly reliable and compact when assembled. When unfolded, the furniture is comfortable bed for up to 5 people, depending on the model and design.

The transformation is carried out using a fabric handle located on the seat cross member. You need to pull on it - and all the other parts will move out in turn. Sofas can also be attributed to this type. with the "scissors" transformation mechanism, only here the sleeping part does not slide out on wheels, but rolls to the side and is butted to the corner side, forming a double bed.

Folding

The most popular sofas with a folding mechanism include upholstered furniture such as "accordion" - during the transformation, the parts of the sofa are pulled out, like the bellows of a musical instrument. For layout lift the seat up until it clicks, and then pull out all other parts and install them on the supports.

Common among this type and model "Clamshells" - in the folded state, the elements of the sofa are also inside the structure, and when unfolded, they are installed on special racks. Only in "folding beds" the transformation belt is placed in a recess between the seat and the rear part - by pulling on it, the seat can be pulled out, after which the sofa opens up like a sink.

Lifting

Among the folding corner sofas with a lifting mechanism, the most widespread are modular products, where the corner and main parts are disconnected from each other. The transformation process is carried out, as in classic sofas "books" or "click-clack". The seat rises until it clicks, thereby lowering the back of the sofa, and then the whole structure is pulled towards itself as far as it will go - the end of the seats is installed on the folding legs, and the back wall is placed on the frame.

In some models, the structure does not extend, then for arranging a sleeping place and creating a single surface, the corner part is disconnected from the main one and moves to the back to the side - on one level with the unfolded half.

Frame, upholstery and filler materials

The frame of corner folding sofas is mainly assembled from different materials - the main racks and lintels are made of wood, the side walls are made of plywood or chipboard, additional supporting pressed lamellas are often installed in the seats.

In budget models, almost the entire structure can be made of chipboard, only the sliding elements will have wooden beams or bars, but this option is not recommended for installation in bedrooms and children's rooms due to the high level of toxicity of the material.

As a filler, modern manufacturers use many different materials: most of them are synthetic and unfavorable to human health, so the choice should be taken with caution. The most popular types of sofa "fillings" recommended by experts for residential buildings and apartments:

  • foam rubber;
  • polyurethane foam or polyurethane foam;
  • spring blocks;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • natural latex.

Synthetic products are suitable for upholstery only for office furniture, but in residential buildings and apartments it is better to use natural materials:

  • flock;
  • matting or burlap;
  • chenille;
  • jacquard.

If you choose a budget option, then you should not pay much attention to the "environmental friendliness" of the upholstery material - it will still not work to buy an inexpensive sofa with natural upholstery. In this case, it is better to devote time to choosing a practical and durable product, to make sure that the colors fit the general interior of the room.

Dimensions (edit)

Almost all folding corner sofas suggest transformation into a full-fledged sleeping place, therefore, as a rule, they are large in size. For example, a triple sleeping sofa 180 cm long when unfolded can be up to 230 cm wide. Such models are often found among modular options. The double compact corner version will have a width of about 130 cm both in the assembled and unfolded position. The sizes of the living room models are from 2.3 to 2.8 m in length and from 1.4 to 1.7 m in width.

Selection Tips

According to statistics, the classic wall-mounted version has the highest sales in the furniture market. But in these cases, experts in the arrangement of interiors advise to purchase only sliding models, which provide not partial, but complete transformation into a sleeping place, for example, with a roll-out mechanism.

It should be borne in mind that, in addition to the classic version, corner sofas are classified into three more types, each of which will suit its own setting.

  • Monolithic sofa. The products are made up of several stationary parts that are fastened together at the factory. Such models are the least functional - the folding mechanism is only lifting. You can also use only the long main part or the short corner part as berths.
  • Modular type consists of several separate elements, the size and number of parts will depend on the specific model. The products provide for an almost complete transformation - many different combinations can be made from them.

Thanks to the ability to swap armrests and corner pieces (ottomans), modular models have won great popularity among interior designers.

  • Island folding corner sofas form in the room a kind of dedicated recreation areas, which are usually equipped in the center of the premises. The models look good both from the front and from the outside - for this, the rear backs are decorated in the same way as the main sides (upholstery material, ornament).

Often, designers create drawings of island models without a back wall to save room space.

Thanks to its optimal configuration corner models of sofas are suitable for almost any setting, they are used in absolutely all world famous interior styles. Monolithic products are mainly installed in kitchens, living rooms, children's rooms. Folding products are suitable for small apartments.

Designers advise installing island and modular models in large rooms and spacious studio apartments.

How to arrange the room?

Despite the seemingly unambiguous design, it is not at all necessary to install a corner sofa bed in the corner of the room. Geometrically correct sizes allow you to create various original design compositions in rooms - equip square islands for recreation, divide the room into thematic zones.

It is better to place a wall-mounted corner sofa under a window.so that the main longitudinal side faces the door. In the kitchen, such furniture should be placed away from the gas stove. In children's rooms, corner sofas are positioned so that the short side, armrest and backrest do not interfere with the movement of the child.
