All about lavender fields in Crimea
Among all the variety of flowers that exist today and can be grown both at home and in the fields for use for industrial purposes, I would like to highlight the lavender. This is a beautiful flower that is famous not only for its appearance, but also for its breathtaking scent. He is so unusual and so amazingly beautiful that he is sung even in songs.
Plant features
Lavender is considered a versatile and unpretentious plant that very often becomes a decoration in the garden, and can also grow even without human intervention in the wild. Few people know, but in order to enjoy the large-scale beauty and aroma of blooming lavender, you need to go to the Crimea peninsula. Yes, this is where its huge fields are located.
If earlier tourists who went on vacation pursued the goal of swimming in the warm sea and getting a good sea tan, now an integral part of the vacation of almost every vacationer in Crimea is an excursion to the lavender fields. According to statistics, artists often come here for inspiration, newlyweds for beautiful photographs, as well as simply nature lovers and connoisseurs of beauty. And, of course, lovers of easy money are frequent guests of these lavender fields, who, without a twinge of conscience, pluck flowers for the purpose of selling.
A bit of history
Lavender is a short herbaceous plant characterized by small, beautiful purple flowers. They say that during the exuberant flowering, the scent spreads throughout Koktebel, Tarkhankut and Sevastopol. Before talking about where and when to look for lavender in Crimea, let's recall a few historical facts that will help us understand where such plantations came from on the peninsula.
Lavender was originally grown exclusively on the French and Spanish coasts of the Mediterranean. Several centuries ago, namely in 1813, it was brought to the Russian Empire and began to be grown in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. The narrow-leaved variety took advantage. The flower has taken root well on the peninsula, because a drought-resistant climate and rocky soil are quite acceptable for it. It should be noted that the properties of the plant remained the same as at home.
Today, lavender is grown on the peninsula primarily for industrial purposes on a large scale..
Even 30 years ago, plantations occupied about 2.6 thousand hectares. Today, unfortunately, this number has decreased. For some reason, most of the fields were left unattended, and the plants simply died.
Bloom season
Of course, if a person who goes to Crimea has the goal of visiting lavender fields, you need to be very responsible in choosing the time of your trip, because lavender is not blooming for a whole year. Given the fact that lavender is originally a thermophilic plant native to the Mediterranean, its flowering period is variable and depends on various factors.
For example, a cold and late spring can shift the timing of when lavender begins to bloom. If you take something in between, then the most exuberant flowering period falls in mid-June - early July. It was during this period that one can observe the most magnificent purple floral carpet in the fields of the Crimea.
Of course, you can take a chance and go to the lavender plantations in early August. But, most likely, expectations will not be met. Already in early August, the flowers begin to dry out under the influence of the scorching Crimean sun and lose their original bright and mesmerizing look. Only the smell remains, but, unfortunately, there is no color brightness.
Do not forget that lavender is an industrial plant, grown not so much for tourists to admire it, but for use in perfumery and pharmacology. That's why farmers will not wait for flowers to dry, they harvest them on time.
But not all lavender fields are under strict supervision, there are also so-called wild plantings, which were formed naturally with the help of the wind, which could spread the seeds of the plant around the surrounding area.

The places where lavender grows are popularly called "Crimean Provence". And this is not surprising, because if you look at the endless fields, which have a mesmerizing lilac-blue color, you can imagine yourself in a small French province.
