It is common for a modern person to throw out things that have lost their presentation. Even if a single speck or a small catch appears on the clothes, it is often sent to the trash can.

The culture of consumption played a role in this: marketers and advertisers instill in us that the wardrobe needs to be constantly updated, and not to wear things for more than one or two seasons.

But is it really necessary to get rid of good clothes that can last several more seasons, if the defect can be corrected on our own? After all, many of us have already forgotten that torn clothes can be darned and patched up: this will save the family and the budget and not clutter up the wardrobe with an abundance of things.

In today's article, we're going to show you how you can fix your torn jeans with patches. You will learn several simple and effective ways to repair trousers that even a novice needlewoman can handle.

Removing holes

The patching technique will differ slightly, depending on where the jeans are torn. Pants usually rip in places that are prone to rubbing or stretching.

Most often, these are the knees and the area between the legs. If in the first case the patch will be noticeable, even if it is done very carefully, then the patch can be sewn between the legs so that no one will guess about its presence.

Sewing on the patch is best on a sewing machine - this way you can do the job as efficiently as possible. At the same time, the model of the unit is not at all important - whether this is an old mechanical machine that you inherited from your grandmother or a modern computer-controlled device.

In addition to a sewing machine, you will need:

  • a piece of denim of a suitable color;
  • threads to match;
  • scissors;
  • set of safety pins.

Between the legs

Before starting the main work, you need to give the hole a neat look.

To do this, cut off the protruding long threads from its edges. Then the edges of the gap must be swept together so that it does not continue to increase in size. We do it manually. The stitches should be fairly close but wide.

Sew not tightly: in place of the hole there should not be any creases in the fabric or a hard, protruding seam. The torn area must be made as smooth and even as possible.

Next, you need to cut out a patch of a suitable shape and size. It should be slightly larger than the hole itself. We will sew the patch on the seamy side of the jeans so that it is less noticeable.

Beforehand, it is recommended to fix the patch in place with pins - so you do not have to constantly monitor that it does not move during the work.

Now we turn on the sewing machine, thread the thread and proceed to the piece (this is the name of the process of sewing on the patch). Select the zigzag mode and sew stitches over the entire surface of the patch.

You need to try to make the lines as close as possible to each other. The most convenient way to do this is to use the reverse function; if one is not provided on your unit, you will have to start over every time.

At the end of the work, we fasten and cut the thread.

On the knee

In the area of the knees, jeans are most often torn in children who do not sit still for a minute. It would be a real waste to buy new trousers every time a similar nuisance occurs, because a damaged item can be easily and quickly repaired with your own hands.

A patch on the knee, even if done with great skill, will almost certainly be noticeable upon closer inspection. Therefore, we offer you a way to repair jeans, in which the patch becomes a stylish design element.

To do this, you need a piece of denim in a contrasting shade. For example, bright blue denim patches will look spectacular on black jeans. You can cut a suitable piece out of an old denim item that you definitely won't be wearing anymore.

  1. So, the first thing to do is decide on the size of the patch and cut a suitable fragment.
  2. The patch should be as wide as the leg, and long enough - about 15 cm. If it is difficult for you to cut the part straight from the fabric the first time, first make a pattern out of paper. Do not forget to make a small hem allowance - about 0.5 cm.
  3. Fold the patch over the edges and baste.
  4. Now you can sew it to the leg. The most convenient way to do this is on a sewing machine, but you can also do it manually.
  5. This method assumes the presence of such inserts on two legs - this way the result looks more complete and aesthetic. Therefore, do the same on the other leg.

If you have a large piece of leather, it can also be used as knee patches.

What material can be used for the patch?

You may not always find a suitable piece of denim at home, and wasting time buying a few centimeters of denim in a sewing store is completely inappropriate.

However, experienced needlewomen came up with several possible ways out of the situation. Let's consider the most interesting of them.

We use "native" fabric

The easiest way to find a fabric that matches the color and texture is to cut a piece out of the very jeans that need repair. But you need to choose a place where the absence of a piece of material will not be noticeable.

The only such area of the jeans is under the back pockets. From here you can borrow a little material without compromising the overall appearance of the product.

Instead of the cut out fragment, you can sew on any other fabric, because the inside of the pockets is invisible to others. The main thing is to choose a fairly dense material and firmly plaster the jeans from the wrong side.

We use glue

Adhesive fabric, which is also called "cobweb", can be used only when we are not dealing with through holes, but with strong abrasions that are about to turn into holes.

  • The area of jeans that needs to be strengthened with adhesive material must first be well steamed and ironed.
  • Then a small piece of cobweb is glued using the same iron.
  • It is recommended to fix the result by sewing the worn out place on the sewing machine with a zigzag stitch.
  • The threads must be chosen to match the main material of the product.

How to sew decorative patches?

As we said above, a patch can serve more than just a practical function: it can also be part of a design that gives a thing a personality. This is especially true for children's things that must be beautiful and original.

There are many ways to create unusual patches using different materials. Here are some of the most interesting and striking solutions:

  • turn holes in your knees into funny monsters;
  • make a cute applique on the torn place;
  • patch up the hole using elements of the patchwork technique;
  • sew on many small patches instead of one large one;
  • mask small holes with embroidery.

Thermal patches

Perhaps the most basic way to fix a hole in jeans is to close it with a thermal patch.

Thermal patches, or thermal stickers, are textile pictures on an adhesive basis. They can be made in the form of animals, cartoon characters, cars, various inscriptions and logos.

The thermal patch is glued very simply - you just need to attach it to the torn place and walk over it with a hot iron. If you are afraid that the edges of the hole under such a patch may part, first strengthen them with glue.

Lace patches

Another original method of playing around with holes in jeans is decorating them with lace inserts. The combination of rough jeans and thin lace looks incredibly impressive.

For this purpose, you can choose guipure of any shade, but patches from white lace look best if the jeans are dark, or from black if they are light.

Sew on lace inserts in the same way as regular patches - from the wrong side of the trousers. Only the edges of the hole do not need to be swept away. You can even tear it a little to the desired size and make a casual fringe around the edges.
