DIY cakes photophone
Hardly anyone will deny that social networks have long since transformed from simple photo albums into platforms for self-promotion and making money. With their help, many self-employed citizens promote their goods and services. However, in order to attract attention to yours among thousands of pages, you need a beautiful design. Today we will talk about how you can make a photo zone for confectionery with your own hands: cakes, cupcakes, handmade marshmallows and much more.
What can you use?
For starters, a good background is vital when conducting product or food photography. No matter how delicious and wonderful the cake may be, it will simply "get lost" against the background of the usual home environment, floral wallpaper, and the kitchen table.
A self-made photophone, used over and over again, will make your page recognizable and individual, which is also important for a home pastry chef.
Light-colored surfaces are best for food photography. Most often used:
- vintage frayed wood countertops;
- various fabrics;
- marble slabs;
- brick / concrete walls.
Of course, most often canvases with images of a particular texture, and not real decorations, act as a photo background. It is both cheaper and much easier to implement.
Wood option
However, let's not take the easiest path and first try to create a photophone. using natural lumber.
To do this, you need to prepare:
- boards (choose the number, length and width yourself, but keep in mind that in the end you should get a rather large square / rectangular board, on which you can easily place a cake or a box of cupcakes);
- liquid nails (construction glue);
- sandpaper;
- a brush (a special tool for brushing wood);
- matt varnish for wood, wood stain or acrylic paints.
It is recommended to work with a mask, as there will be a lot of dust.
Step-by-step instruction:
- cut the prepared boards into the required number of parts;
- sand each one with sandpaper, then work it with a brush in a circular motion along the fibers - this way you will improve the appearance of the board;
- we fasten the finished lumber with liquid nails - for this, the boards need to be laid out in a square / rectangle, turning them “face down”, and the adhesive should be applied perpendicularly;
- on top of liquid nails, the second layer of boards is also laid out perpendicularly, but already with the front side up;
- after the glue dries, the surface of the resulting structure is treated with a stain;
- if you want to use both sides of a wooden board, you can paint them in different colors (for example, white and gray), artificially age the surface with sandpaper;
- the final stage of work will be to cover the photo area with matte varnish in 2 layers.
How to make a photophone from vinyl wallpaper?
This method does not imply any tricky actions at all - you just need to visit any store that sells wallpaper, find a canvas with a suitable pattern, purchase 1 roll and use it as a substrate for your culinary masterpieces... Of course, before taking a photo, the wallpaper will have to be straightened and pressed down with something heavy so that the roll does not spin back. Alternatively, you can simply cut a piece to a suitable size and glue it onto a sheet of plywood or large ceiling tiles.
On the Internet, at many sites, you can order ready-made photo backgrounds with any texture: wood, brick, concrete and others. But often the print quality on them is not very good.
Other original photo zone ideas
There are 2 more ways to create a beautiful food photography background.
Photo printing on foam board:
- find an image of the desired background on any site that offers stock photos for free use, or take a photo of the surface yourself;
- find out which photo centers in your city offer photo printing services on foam board;
- inform the master of the following data - the thickness of the sheet should not be less than 0.5 cm, the length and width either 50x70 cm (suitable as a substrate), or 120x100 cm (can be used as a back wall when the subject is placed vertically).
And for the option using self-adhesive film, you will need:
- the film itself;
- Cardboard used to bind books (available at any artist store)
- rags;
- ruler;
- simple pencil;
- stationery knife.
Stages of making a photophone:
- on a cardboard base, using a ruler and a pencil, draw a square / rectangle of the desired size;
- draw the same figure with the same parameters on the film (from the inside out);
- carefully cut out both forms with a clerical knife, placing a ruler for fidelity;
- gradually removing the protective layer from the film, begin to glue it to the cardboard backing, while making sure that there are no bubbles and distortions, smooth the canvas with a rag.
