The opinion that Crimea is attractive only in the spring-summer season is wrong. The wonderful subtropical climate of the peninsula makes it a popular holiday destination at any time of the year. In addition to the azure coast, clear sea and picturesque nature, winter recreation in the mountains is also able to deliver a lot of positive emotions and vivid impressions for all guests of Crimea.

Winter in Crimea

Throughout the year, Crimea pleases its guests with a mild climate. And in winter there are many warm sunny days on the peninsula. Temperatures rarely drop below zero, usually at night. During the day, the average December air temperature is +2 - + 8 ° С, and in the south of the peninsula the temperature can reach + 15 ° С.

The most “winter” and coldest month in Crimea is February. During this period, cold winds blow from the side of the sea, fog swirls over the ground, sometimes there are snowfalls.

In the valleys and near the mountains, the snow melts quickly, and on the mountain peaks it lays almost until May.

By the end of February, spring comes to the peninsula and the first spring flowers appear in the gardens, and buds on the trees. Already in March, the Crimea is completely covered with flowers and flowering trees, the aroma of which fills the spring air.

Winter resorts of Crimea

Despite the relatively warm Crimean winter, snow in the mountains lasts almost until mid-spring. In this regard, in the cold season, you can visit a ski resort in Crimea, where you can have a great time. Experienced skiers recommend planning skiing in February, as the snow that has fallen is no longer so loose, which ensures maximum comfort on the slopes.

In total, there are 2 ski resorts on the peninsula, and this is a lot for the small Crimea.

Ai-Petri

The largest and most popular is located on Mount Ai-Petri - it includes everything you need for an active winter pastime. The height of the mountain plain is 1200 m above sea level, there are several slopes on which there are trails of varying length and difficulty.

There are only 6 tracks on Ai-Petri. The smallest of them is "Frog", a little over 100 m long. This section has a lift for children, where qualified instructors train young skiers.

The longest slope is called “27th kilometer”, its length is over 1000 meters, with an altitude difference of 170 meters.

Only professionals and true connoisseurs of freestyle go down this track. They are given the opportunity to ride with the maximum level of extreme, without risking to "run over" any of the beginners.

In the Ai-Petri snow park, you can rent not only alpine skis, but also sledges, snowboards - all at an affordable price. You can get to the top of the plateau using a cable bridge leading from the village of Miskhor, as well as 9 more drag lifts. An unforgettable and amazing view of the coast opens from the observation deck of the Miskhor-Ai-Petri cable car.

The lift lifts operate from early morning until 18:00, as riding at night is life-threatening. Snowmobile rental services are available to get to the distant snow trails. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is regularly on duty at the resort, there are small restaurants and cafes. If you wish, you can visit the local ski club.

Angarsk pass

The second most popular ski resort in Crimea is located on the Angarsk Pass mountain range, at an altitude of 752 meters above sea level. This is the highest point of the Simferopol - Alushta highway. The area near the Crimean Angara River, flowing between the Demerdzhi and Chatyr-Dag mountains, has become a favorite resort for vacationers. The Angarsk Pass is especially popular in winter among skiing enthusiasts.

On the Angarsk Pass there are slopes with large differences in altitude (about 700 m), skiing on which is a source of adrenaline for athletes. The steepest place for descents is considered Cold Couloir gorge, which is on the famous high-altitude tract of the Chatyr-Dag plateau.

Along the "corridor" of the Cold Couloir, one can reach the next height of this massif, Mount Angar-Burun. During the Soviet era, 3 ski lifts were built at the Angarsk resort.

On the slope of Chatyr-Dag there are slopes of various levels of difficulty and length, so both beginners and professionals of skiing will be able to spend their time actively. At special points on the top of the plateau, you can rent various items of equipment: sledges, alpine skis, snowboards. For cross-country skiers, there are also excellent slopes in the winter forest.

In the nearby villages you can find cafeterias and places to stay. The pricing policy at the Angarsk Pass is more democratic in comparison with Ai-Petri.

Advantages and disadvantages of Crimea ski resorts

Taking into account that ski resorts on the peninsula are officially absent, there are still conditions for active winter recreation here. On the peaks of Ai-Petri, Chatyr-Dag and Angarsk pass, winter recreation in the mountains is organized at a good level. On the positive side, it is worth noting the following:

  • availability of essential infrastructure near ski areas;
  • various routes in length and difficulty;
  • affordable prices;
  • the possibility of renting equipment;
  • availability of small slopes for children, instructor services;
  • picturesque landscapes around.

Compared to the Caucasian, Transcarpathian and Sochi ski resorts, unfortunately, the Crimea winter resorts have some disadvantages. The same situation with similar resorts in other regions and neighboring countries - the peninsula is significantly inferior in terms of the scale of ski routes.Lack of equipment and technology also negatively affects the resort's customer turnover. It also happens that on snowy days the serpentine track leading to the tops of the mountains is completely closed or limited to travel along it. This is due to a difficult road and weather situation, the risk of an avalanche.

Perhaps the ski resorts in the Crimea do not yet "reach" the highest level, but winter recreation in the mountains opens up a maximum of options for a pleasant pastime.

Numerous hiking trails on the tops of the Crimean mountains, gorgeous winter landscapes, breathtaking ski slopes, as well as good service at affordable prices are the main reasons why you should definitely visit the Crimean Peninsula.
