The Crimean peninsula is widely known among tourists for the resorts of its southern coast, but one should not think that the tourist potential of Crimea is limited to this. Even if you are looking for a beach holiday, you should remember that the sea is here from all sides, and although subtropics and palm trees can be found only in the very south, in summer the temperature of the air and water is good on all Crimean coasts. At the same time, most tourists will inevitably rush to the south and to large cities anyway.

While those who are looking for peace or simply want to save money, choose small resort villages a little further north. If you think this approach to choosing a resort is reasonable, be sure to pay attention to the village of Mezhvodnoye.

Description and history

The village of Mezhvodnoye is located in the western part of the Crimean Peninsula and administratively belongs to the Black Sea region. This is a fairly large settlement with a population of over 2 thousand people, although some 10 years ago there were 1.5 times more people. The unusual location of the village contributes greatly to its development as a resort.

It is sandwiched between the Yarylgach Bay of the Karkinitsky Gulf of the Black Sea, as well as two estuary-type lakes - Yarylgach and Dzharylgach. In summer it is worth going here for a beach holiday, but mud treatment is possible almost all year round.

Experts agree that today the entire balneological potential of this place has not been revealed, therefore Mezhvodny still has a development perspective.

The exact time of the origin of the village is unknown - scientists can only say that people appeared here 4 thousand years ago.In the IV-III centuries BC, the houses of the ancient Greeks were found here, which did not last long - hostile barbarians lived too close. At the time of the Crimean Khanate, the village already existed and bore the Tatar name, which is still preserved at the surrounding sites - Yarylgach.

After the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire in 1783, the local population began to leave here, and the map of 1817 shows that the village remained, but people are no longer there. However, by 1842 people appeared here again - the Crimean Tatars began to populate the settlement again.

Nevertheless, after the Crimean War of 1853-1855, the village was again abandoned by the entire local population, and after 10 years it was populated mainly by Russian people.

Where is it located and how to get there?

If you are looking for Mezhvodnoye on a map of Crimea, pay attention to the protruding western tip of the peninsula. If you look from the side of Simferopol, you need to choose the north-western direction - approximately to Evpatoria, which is the closest large city to Mezhvodnoye. The village itself is located in the Black Sea region, 16 kilometers from the Chernomorskoye regional center.

Most tourists arrive on the Crimean peninsula through the Simferopol airport. Even though Mezhvodnoye is a small village, even it has a direct passenger connection with the Crimean capital.

There is a direct bus only twice a day from the Central Bus Station, both departing in the afternoon. Estimated travel time is about 4 hours.

Considering that direct flights from Simferopol to Mezhvodnoye do not run very often, it is worth considering an alternative travel option - with a change in the regional center of the Black Sea. Buses from the Crimean capital run here much more intensively, there are flights both from the Central bus station and from the bus station-2 "Kurortnaya". Depending on the route, the trip can take 3-4 hours. Further, it is much easier to get to Mezhvodnoye - for this there are local buses and taxis.

For those who prefer to travel by their own car, Mezhvodnoye is not a very convenient destination, since even the commissioned Crimean Bridge is located quite far from it.

If you nevertheless decide to come by personal transport from the Krasnodar Territory, you will have to overcome 350 kilometers across the territory of Crimea, which will take 5-5.5 hours.

Most services recommend moving on the main roads, although this is not the shortest way - at first almost to Feodosia along the Tavrida highway, turning right on Dzhankoy in time. Behind it, the direction leads to Krasnoperekopsk and Armyansk, along the road to which in Voink you need to turn left to Chernomorskoe. Mezhvodnoye is located on the last section of the route, so you won't get lost.

Where to stay?

Mezhvodnoye is neither a generally recognized resort of significant fame, nor just a large settlement, however, the fact that there are good opportunities for the development of balneological tourism could not but affect the local infrastructure. Naturally, a significant proportion of places where you can stay in the village are boarding houses and recreation centers of a sanatorium type with meals and medical procedures, because many come here not only to relax, but also to improve their health.

Do not think that all such infrastructure is a purely Soviet building - for example, boarding house "Dolphin" was built not so long ago and has already gained wide popularity among the guests of the western part of Crimea.

Here you can relax for 1200 rubles per day per person (2019), despite the fact that all services are already included in the price.

An alternative might be boarding house "Lydia", which is good because it offers rooms of different price categories - from economy to luxury. Of the additional opportunities, here are options for spending time in the fresh air: table tennis, bicycles, and so on.

For those who would like not to be treated, but simply relax in comfort on the sea far from too popular resorts, a different type of accommodation is presented. Despite the fact that Mezhvodnoye has not yet reached the level of resorts on the southern coast of Crimea, there are already good hotels and hotels near the sea and with their own parking. In most cases, they were built in the last couple of decades, therefore they do not frighten with "Soviet comfort". Let's highlight some of the most popular places.

  • Hotel "Villa Espanola" is one of the best and most expensive in the village. Accommodation here is carried out in separate cottages. The apartments are equipped with all necessary household appliances, each room has a small seating area.
  • Guest house "La Fleur" it is convenient for families with children - there is a separate playground for the kids. Outsiders cannot enter the territory, since it is fenced. Cooking can be done independently in the shared kitchen; if you wish, you can immediately rent everything you need for a picnic.
  • Guest house "ART" resembles a classic hotel - in a three-storey building there are rooms for 2, 3 or 4 beds. There is a breakdown of rooms by class: "luxury" in comparison with the "standard" has much more household appliances such as a multicooker, an electric kettle and a microwave oven. There are opportunities for organizing a picnic with a barbecue or playing table tennis, as well as a children's playground.

As in other parts of Crimea, the private sector forms a significant part of the supply of housing in the lower price segment. You can negotiate with the owner not only on the spot, but often also via the Internet, however, here it is it is much more difficult to assess in advance the level of comfort provided.

It should be said right away that this budget option is more suitable for unassuming vacationers, because the maximum that the owner can provide is the level of a "standard" hotel, but with self-catering.

The best beaches

Despite its modest size, Mezhvodnoye is ready to offer its guests a good selection of beaches for every taste. Let's take a look at some of the popular destinations for locals and tourists alike.

  • The central beach of the village is the only one where there is infrastructure, but it is difficult to find fault with it - for a two thousandth town this is what you need. The length of 1.5 kilometers with a width of 100 meters is enough for Mezhvodnoye - there is no excessive crowding here. The central beach is made of fine, clean sand. Although there is no organized parking, you can always park somewhere nearby.
  • Wild beaches of the Yarylgach bay will be of interest to those who agree to sacrifice even a modest village infrastructure for the sake of seaside recreation in a place where there are no strangers at all or almost. The beaches are located to the south of the former oil base, which has not been functioning for a long time, and therefore does not pollute the water. There is a road nearby, which makes it easier for vacationers with their own cars to get here.
  • The beaches of Lake Dzharylgach are not sea, but many tourists go here for the sake of the local estuary with therapeutic mud. Anyone who does not like swimming in salt water should also go here, especially since these places are picturesque. There are not so many people here, because there is no beach infrastructure on the lake either. The beach itself, by the way, is relatively small - with a length of a kilometer, its width is actually limited by a ten-meter strip along the water, since the sand is too compacted further from the reservoir.
    • Wild beaches of the Black Cape located to the west of the village - where the local lighthouse is located. The cape is separated from the sea by a small bay, so vacationers may not adjust to the weather, but choose the option that suits them best. There are several beach areas here, and they are all quite small, but there are not many people here either. There is no infrastructure, but this is one of the cleanest places in the village with breathtaking landscapes.

    sights

Unlike most Crimean resorts, in Mezhvodnoye there are no outstanding sights in terms of architecture - it is just a small village in which there are no old buildings. Due to this, you can only see the surrounding nature here - it's good that it is quite attractive. Locals advise guests of the village to visit on the Bakalskaya Spit - a thin strip of land separating the sea and the lagoon.

The weather in reservoirs from different sides can be different at the same time - for example, the sea is rough, and in the lagoon there is absolute calm. Among other things, it is very convenient from here to observe the dolphins that have chosen this coast.

Not far from Mezhvodnoye and Cape Tarkhankut, probably known to most fans of the Soviet film industry as a place chosen by filmmakers for its picturesqueness. Many films showing scenes of remote shores were filmed here, the most famous can be called such films as "Amphibian Man" and "Pirates of the 20th Century". If you still want architecture, you can try take a walk along Mezhvodnoye itself, but there are very few real attractions here.

Of the religious buildings, only Chapel of St. Olga, there is also an attractive fountain in the center of the square. If you are looking for a photo zone, be sure to walk to the Lovers' Bench. Lovers of sea romance may also find it interesting Lighthouse, which is noted for its somewhat unusual architecture.

For those who have come on vacation for a long time and have already managed to get enough of both beaches and impressive local landscapes, an outbound excursion to the major cities of Crimea can be interesting. The southern coast, which is usually taken not only for sunbathing and swimming, but also for sightseeing, is quite remote, on the other hand, Evpatoria is located relatively close. Mezhvodnoye is connected with it by direct bus routes, which leave several times a day; it will take 2-2.5 hours to spend on the road.

If you suddenly have a car, the issue can be resolved as quickly as possible - the car will travel 71 kilometers along the local highway in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

    Recreation and entertainment

Being a relatively small village, remote from the main resort area, Mezhvodnoye does not offer the visiting tourist any incredible entertainment, except for those that can be organized in any coastal village of the same size. For adults, there are actually only 2 options for an unusual pastime - kiting and fishing.

For many people, kiting can be of significant interest, because not all of our fellow citizens regularly visit the sea. This sport resembles windsurfing, only here the movement along the waves is carried out due to the thrust of a simultaneously launched kite.

Naturally, this requires certain skills, but among the locals there are several people who call themselves instructors. These same people will rent out everything necessary for the first lesson to curious tourists, so if you have dreamed for a long time or just got bored - why not try it.

Fishing is more interesting for men, because even a typical domestic fisherman, accustomed to medium-sized rivers or small lakes, will be interested in trying his luck by throwing a hook into the real sea. By agreeing with the locals, you can make the process as interesting as possible - for example, rent a boat and get out to a certain distance from the coast.

In this case, practical fishing can be combined with a purely aesthetic activity in the form of a boat trip, which the lady may already like.

There are no more options for children, and all of them are located on the waterfront, which is the focus of life in the summer. All that Mezhvodnoye offers to kids is a small amusement park, where there are trampolines, labyrinths and the "highlight of the program" - the Ferris wheel. Also located nearby mini-zoo "Teremok", but only pets are featured here.

To entertain a bored child, you still have to go to Evpatoria, where there is an aquarium, terrarium and dolphinarium.

The choice of catering establishments is also not too large, but nevertheless it is quite possible to eat deliciously in Mezhvodnoye. At least it is worth looking into "Octopus", where you can taste dishes of all local cuisines - Russian, Tatar and Ukrainian, and in the evening one of the main discos of the village begins here.

For European cuisine and interesting cocktails, you should contact another cafe - Sunrise. Finally, on the seashore, you just need to taste local seafood, therefore, a visit to a fish tavern must be included in a gastronomic tour of Mezhvodnoye public institutions.

    Vacationers reviews

If you search the Internet for people's opinions about Mezhvodnoye and rest in it, it turns out that not every person has such an experience - only a very small percentage of vacationers arriving on the Crimean peninsula travels here. The main motivation of such tourists is either to find the cheapest option for a seaside vacation, or to try mud treatment.

It will not be possible to find lofty laudatory comments about Mezhvodnoye - this is just a small village with a minimum of infrastructure, which was just lucky with a good location. If vacationers are undemanding people, they may well like it here, given the tranquility of the local environment and affordable prices for all basic services. If you are looking for a village where you could just sunbathe and swim, then this is where you should go - all conditions are met.

The criticism is usually related to the fact that, in the understanding of many people, Mezhvodnoye is not a resort at all. There is no impressive tourist infrastructure here, there is nowhere to lead a child, you yourself will not have much fun either, and it is 2 hours by bus to Evpatoria. Even the balneological direction is still very poorly developed here, despite the good potential of this place.
