All About Crochet Patch Rugs
Crocheted patchwork rugs harmoniously fit into interiors in country or Provence style, any ethnic design solutions. Once they were called "grandmothers", they were considered an integral attribute of rural life. Today, a new generation of fashionistas and interior designers is ready to learn how to knit a carpet on the floor from scraps of fabric in patchwork or country style with your own hands.
Peculiarities
Crocheted rugs made of scraps of fabric quite successfully replace popular patchwork textiles. At first glance, these techniques are even similar, but in reality the difference is great. To tie the rug to the floor in the bathroom, hallway or living room, no threads needed: all connections are made with just one hook.
Unusual products are made from strips of fabric knitted or sewn together. Previously, in the villages, they preferred to simply bandage the canvases cut into ribbons. Today craftsmen sew them on a typewriter or by hand.: This avoids twisting and the finished product looks more neat.
It is recommended to unroll knitted fabrics in a circle from the very beginning, making continuous strips as long as possible.
Usually crocheted rugs are made as simple as possible in shape. Most often it is a circle or an oval, you can also knit a rectangular track or a square product small format (for use at the entrance to the house or in the bathroom). In choosing a pattern, you can not be especially zealous. Most often, concentric circles or stripes, replacing each other, act in this capacity.
The color scheme can be any, but it is still better to focus on classic combinations of contrasting or similar shades in color.
The combination of white and yellow, blue, red colors always looks elegant. A mixture of scarlet and orange will add brightness to the room. Lemon-olive tones will give you peace. Lilac-purple tones are suitable for a children's room, a young girl's bedroom.
Materials and tools
You don't have to try to be original in the choice of materials. The best crochet home rugs come from old cotton T-shirts.
It is recommended to choose not too faded products containing more than 70% cotton and other natural fibers.
In the future, the rug made of them will be easy to wash and keep in order. In addition, you can use old nylon or knitted monophonic tights.
The list of required tools won't be long either. In the process, the following materials and tools will come in handy.
- Largest hook: from 6 to 10 mm. It is better to choose the one-sided version with a comfortable non-slip grip.
- Scissors... You will need them to make fabric ribbons. Cut the fabric into strips 3-5 cm wide.
- Thread and needle... Needed to connect disparate tapes to each other. They can be replaced with a sewing machine: this way the creation of a single ball will be much easier and easier.
Having carefully prepared all materials and tools, it is worth choosing a comfortable workplace. Knitting a bulky product is a rather laborious and tedious task. That's why it is worth taking care of choosing a comfortable chair, in which you can spend more than one hour.
To prevent the ball from rolling, it is better to put it in a basket or bucket, placing it next to it. In this way, it will be possible to avoid tangling of the thread in the process of work.
How to do it?
To knit or weave a patchwork carpet with your own hands, it is enough to prepare all the necessary materials for work, find free time. The simplest option will be round.
To successfully cope with the work, it is worth following the recommendations of the step-by-step master class.
- Preparing the ball... The fabric for him must be thoroughly washed and ironed. Cotton sheets, knitted T-shirts will do. They are dismantled into strips of 3-5 cm each, the resulting segments are joined together with seams, ironed. A medium-sized rug requires about 200 m of base.
- Chain creation... It is knitted in the traditional way - with air loops (only 5 is enough). They are closed in a ring, which will become the basis for the future product.
- Knitting 1 row... First, through the center of the circle, you need to knit a lifting loop, then continue moving along the ring, forming double crochets in each loop and a half-column at the end.
- Knitting 2 rows... Double crochets are also used here. A second loop is made from the first loop to increase the diameter of the ring. It is important not to skip steps, to act carefully.
- Knitting 3 rows... At this point, you can change the thread color. It is important to remember that when knitting 3 rows, you need to alternate the first and second loops. In every second step, their number doubles: this way the diameter will gradually increase. After the completion of each subsequent row, the workpiece is placed on a flat surface and leveled.
- From 4 laps the number of stitches from the loops increases by 1 with each subsequent cycle. That is, in this row there will be 2 of them, in the 5th circle there will already be 3. You need to continue until the size of the rug reaches the desired performance.... Usually its diameter does not exceed 0.7-1 m, larger products are made oval or rectangular.
When knitting round and oval products, the movement occurs in a spiral. In this regard, it is necessary to carefully control the bending of the edges of the product.
It is worth considering that if they become wavy, wrap, you need to dissolve the last row and knit it without increments. Then return to the previous scheme with an increase in the step on each row.
Knitting of round country rugs can be easily mastered even by a person who is far from needlework. With the help of correctly selected color combinations, you can create original decorative items in a retro style that can decorate the interior of a house or apartment.
If you want to get a rectangular product, the chain of loops at the very beginning is gaining a much greater length - the width of the future knitted rug... Further, knitting is performed in rows sequentially, without an increase. You can use simple chain stitches or double crochets, whichever length you want. It is not customary to make such rugs monochromatic. The width of the stripes replacing each other can be different, vary from 5 to 10 cm.
