Ice skating is a great pleasure for children and adults. It is important to keep your skates in order to make the activity always enjoyable. Special protection will help you take care of your boots and skate blades. You can learn more about what types of blade protection are, how it is used and correctly installed, you can find out later in the article.
Description and purpose
The skate blades are protected by special devices made of various materials, which allow to maintain the sharpness of the runners and the integrity of the steel. Skating on concrete floors and asphalt, iron and marble sills is detrimental to steel ice skates. Special rubber mats, which are safe to move on in skates, are not found on all indoor sports grounds, and even more so on street skating rinks. Therefore, you should put on protective covers on the blades immediately before leaving the ice, so as not to spoil the sports equipment.
An equally important additional function of protection is the preservation of sports equipment from adverse external conditions. Rain, snow, salt, sand will not spoil the quality and appearance of the blades if they are in the case.
You should also use this protection when carrying skates. In this case, the blades, being in the bag and touching, will not scratch each other or the boots, and will not ruin the bag.
Varieties
There are several types of skate protection.
For boots
- Covers made of fabric. A very useful accessory, but quite expensive for the price. They are sewn from thermal fabric, velor and lycra. Professional skaters, preparing for a performance, often order such an accessory to match the color of the suit. Thanks to the zipper, this case is convenient to use. They are bought strictly according to the size of the shoes in order to tightly and evenly cover their entire surface.
- Protective tape. Sticky soft tape is glued in longitudinal stripes in those places where skaters can accidentally scratch their shoes with their teeth during various exercises. The protection is removed easily - like ordinary electrical tape or scotch tape. The material does not leave marks on figure skates.
Blade covers
- Dryers. One of the worst enemies of metal is corrosion. Cloth dryers will save the blades from rust by absorbing any remaining moisture.
- Protective. These are hard cases. They are immediately put on skates, going over the side of the ice arena. How to put it on correctly?
Covering is put on in different ways depending on the model.
- The spring guard must first be secured to the blunt end of the blade and then pulled over the tip of the toe. It is important to make sure that the blade fits snugly into the profile. To do this, it is enough to stand on your feet, shod with skates with covers. The covers should fit the skates well in length, so it is advisable to pick them up at the same time as the skates.
- Covers with a loop are put on by throwing a loop over the blade from the heel side, after which the device is attached to the toe, gradually immersing the skate into the protection slot.
- The soft protection for storage and drying with an elastic band is very easy to put on: it can be stretched with your fingers and freely thrown over the blade.
- Fabric covers made of thermal fabric and velor are first pulled over the boot, and then tightly laced up or zipped.
- Slip-on latex protector easily pulls over skates.
Choosing protection is not a problem. The main thing is that it corresponds exactly to its purpose, is durable, does not harm the blade, does not jump off the ridge and does not scratch the floor.
