Domestic cats are trained to use the litter box from early childhood. This way of organizing the toilet is not always convenient, since you have to regularly monitor the cleanliness of the tray, as well as constantly spend money on filler. Since cats have a fairly high intelligence, they can be trained to relieve themselves directly in the toilet. To make the training more effective, it is recommended to use special toilet covers for cats.

What is it and why are they needed?

Cat litter covers are usually a system that allows you to train your pet to go to the toilet. Most often, such a complex includes several trays of different sizes, which are attached to each other from larger to smaller.

The most common model looks like several trays of a slightly unusual shape that are installed on the toilet. The upper design completely imitates the usual tray, where the filler is also poured. The lower structures already have holes in the center, which differ in diameter. There are both simplified models and more sophisticated training complexes.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before proceeding with the analysis of the pros and cons of the toilet head, it is necessary to note all the advantages and disadvantages of training cats to the toilet. The advantages primarily include:

  • an increase in the free space in the apartment, which was previously occupied by a tray;
  • reduction in filler costs;
  • saving time and effort on cleaning the cat litter box.

As for the disadvantages of toilet training, the first priority is to highlight the potential danger. Even the most agile cat can slip by jumping onto the toilet seat or pressing the flush button. In addition, such a way to relieve themselves is not suitable for all cats due to age restrictions or health conditions.

Among the advantages of toilet seat covers is ease of use. In addition, the use of attachments is the most effective method of toilet training... As for the disadvantages, they also include the risk of injury.

Even the strongest and most reliable structures do not guarantee that the pet will not fall or get hurt.

During the period of training the cat to the toilet, special devices create some inconvenience.

  1. It is necessary to ensure that the pet has access to the toilet at all times: the door to the bathroom must be constantly open, and the toilet seat is raised. Also, the owner of the animal will have to use the toilet itself every time, remove and reinstall the cover again.
  2. The linings need the same regular care as the trays. Failure to do so will create an unpleasant odor and increase the risk of bacteria spreading. However, these inconveniences are only temporary.

Varieties

In pet stores, you can find several varieties of toilet heads for cats. They all differ from each other in size, material of manufacture and the design itself.

  • The disposable pads are a thin plastic insert with a small hole in the center. There are marks on the product along which it will be necessary to make an incision, thereby increasing the central hole.
  • Removable ring designs. This type of nozzle is similar to disposable options, only in this case you do not need to cut holes. Such a model is more convenient to use, since, if necessary, you can insert a structure with a smaller hole back.
  • A system of fastened trays, which is not particularly different in principle of use from removable rings. The main difference lies only in the form of the structure. You can also fill the trays with filler.

As an alternative to store-bought options, you can use homemade pads.

Most often they are made from old trays, cutting them to the size of the hole in the toilet and attaching fasteners.

Selection recommendations

When choosing a lining, it is important to pay attention not only to its quality. You also need to consider the size of the toilet and the dimensions of the animal. For a large cat, it is better to purchase a denser and more durable product - the plastic should be quite thick.

Hole sizes can vary greatly in different pad models.

If a design is selected for kittens up to a year old, then options should be used in which each subsequent hole does not differ much in diameter from the previous one.

The depth to which the nozzle will be placed in the hole of the toilet may also differ depending on the model. It should be borne in mind that a pet is more likely to accidentally scoop up some of the filler from the shallow pads during the process of burying it on the floor.

It is equally important to evaluate the quality of the product. Toxic materials can cause an allergic reaction in your pet... If the plastic has a strong unpleasant odor, then it will only repel the pet.

Plastic that is too thin or brittle can cause your cat to fall into the toilet. At best, the animal will experience stress and refuse to learn further, at worst, it will be injured. It should be borne in mind that the high cost of an overlay does not always indicate its quality - quite often the price is determined by the brand.

It makes no sense to buy the most expensive complexes, since the animal may completely refuse to train to the toilet.

How to toilet train a cat?

Before starting training, you need to remember that not all domestic cats are equally quickly accustomed to the toilet using a lining. And the point here is far from the poor efficiency of the method, but the nature of the animal and its physiological characteristics. Some individuals may not lend themselves to learning at all for a number of reasons. In any case, it is recommended to be patient, as the whole process can take several weeks or months.

To prepare your pet for the main learning phase, first, it is recommended to move its tray to the bathroom (if it was originally in another room) and place it near the toilet.

For the best effect, it is advisable to replace the old litter box with a new one so that the old smell does not distract the cat.

The filler must be used the same, to which the animal is already accustomed. When your pet is comfortable with peeing in a new place, you can take the next steps in training. Now you need to gradually lift the tray up. Old magazines, books, boxes can be used as a stand.

The height should be increased gradually. You also need to take care that so that the whole structure is stable... When the tray reaches the height of the level of the toilet seat, you can proceed to install the cover.

After the toilet cover is attached, fresh filler is poured into it, to which a little old composition from the tray is added. To attract the attention of the animal, catnip is placed in the nozzle or a little valerian tincture is dripped.

It will take your pet a few days to get used to the makeshift toilet litter box. When the animal goes to the toilet without any problems, you need to make a hole in it with a small diameter or remove the top plate.

The hole must be gradually enlarged. Over time, they stop pouring the filler, and when the cat gets used to going to the toilet through the nozzle with the largest slot, it is completely removed. As for flushing after itself, then training in this process is carried out at the request of the owner. During the period of training the cat to the toilet, it is advisable to control this process as much as possible so that it is possible to prevent a traumatic situation if it occurs.

If the pet masters the use of the toilet button, then the owner does not have to flush after the animal every time. However, many cats perceive this process as a game and enjoy watching the water flow. Therefore, they can often use the button for other purposes.

Restrictions on use

No matter how high the quality of the purchased toilet seat cover, there are certain limitations in its use. First of all, they are associated with the fact that not all cats can be toilet trained:

  • do not disturb pregnant animals once again;
  • it is not recommended to train kittens that are less than three months old;
  • also do not bother animals in the postoperative period, as well as cats with paw injuries;
  • a special group also includes cats with diseases of the urinary system and intestines.
