Cat psychology: useful information about behavior
Whoever keeps cats constantly, lives in their presence since childhood, knows everything about the habits of these animals and can tell a lot about them no worse than a specialist. Those who have recently decided to connect their lives with cats find that animals are difficult to manage, it is not easy to negotiate and, in general, it is difficult to understand who is the boss in the house - a cat or a person.
Suddenly you realize that the cat is sleeping not in its bed, but in the owner's bed, feeding is not going as planned. The animal itself taught the owner by its whims to give the food that it wants. After observing the pet, you come to the conclusion that you need to live with her in mutual respect, not play by her rules, but also not impose your own, look closely, study and understand each other. To make life together more successful, let us turn to the psychology of cats, we will tell you what different forms of pet behavior can mean.
What is the tail talking about?
There is an expression "keep the tail with a pistol," that is, raised up. So they say when they tune in to the positive. A situation spied on by cats - if they walk around the apartment with their tail up, then they are happy with everything. At this moment it is easy to communicate with them, they accept affection, if desired, they can play with the owner.
A twitching tail should alert the owner, as it reflects a manifestation of discontent, suggests that the cat is nervous. If at this moment you poke your attention to the animal with your caresses, you can face aggression.
If a cat contracts the muscles at the base of the tail, causing it to twitch, he is nervous and constantly licks himself, most likely he has a nervous strain.
It is necessary to unobtrusively pay more attention to him, and in case of a neglected situation, contact a veterinarian who will prescribe sedatives.
If the cat crouches and tucking his tail, hiding it between his paws, then he is very scared. This posture can be observed when animals sort things out among themselves and the dominant cat introduces the opponent into a state of stupor.
There are more serious reasons that make a pet tuck its tail - they are related to diseases. If the cat is tucking its tail in a prone position, is trembling and cannot stand up, most likely she has diabetes mellitus, accompanied by seizures. The animal urgently needs to be taken to the veterinarian.
A tucked tail, jittery behavior, and an inability to sit up may indicate an injury to the hip or spine. In this case, a veterinarian is also needed.
Why does the cat bend its back?
A curved back with raised hair, a protruding nape and a fluffy tail indicates a strong fright of the animal. At this moment, it should not be touched; in a stressful state, the cat can hit, release its claws or bite. Better to step aside and calm her down in a gentle voice. Try to understand the source of the fear and eliminate it. The cat may be frightened by an unfamiliar thing seen in an unexpected place, or by the owner dressed in a long, unusual robe. When she realizes that this is the master, she will gradually calm down.
Small kittens sometimes, while playing, bend their backs, rears their fur and at the same time jump sideways.
Ears are an indicator of behavior
Two small ears can tell about the mood of the cat, one has only to observe them. Direct and open talk about complete peace and detachment from what is happening. If at such a moment you turn to a pet with a phlegmatic character, he will show complete indifference, he will not even turn his head towards the owner, but one ear will still turn - natural curiosity will force him.
If the cat's ears are tightly pressed to the head, the pupils are dilated, and she herself has compressed like a spring - the animal is in a position of extreme irritation and anger. Better to step aside and wait until she calms down.
The ears turned back give out the excitement of the pet - he wants and is ready to play, catch up, hide. In a word, to hunt.
Feline habits
You can often notice how the cat gently rubs against its legs or various objects, at this moment it leaves a smell. It marks a person, furniture, clothes with its pheromones. Especially new things or clothes in which you came from the street, as it has strange smells. The animal must make them "his own". The cat also rubs tenderly on its legs as a sign of its feelings.
Another feline habit is rolling onto your back with your stomach up. This happens for several reasons: she exposes her belly only to the one whom she unconditionally trusts, while purring and allowing herself to be stroked. The cat can fall on its back even in case of protection.
At such moments, she behaves threateningly, putting her paws forward with open claws.
The gaze of a motionless animal
A lingering glance speaks of a request. For example, a cat sits for a long time and looks at an empty plate, which means that it asks for food, if it sits and looks at the balcony door, it asks to open it. In addition to asking, a long look can mean a lot, you should take a closer look at it:
- the cat catches a threat or is unhappy with something;
- asks to play;
- looks like that out of excess of feelings.
What the look means can be understood by the further behavior of the animal.
Variety of sound signals
The cat is able to meow, purr, snort, change the timbre of the voice from low to high. Communication with an animal can be greatly facilitated if you understand its voice requests and warnings.
- The hissing cat is frightened, she tries to defend herself or scare the enemy.
- Animals snort for various reasons - they are worried; something got in the nose; runny nose begins; an inflamed tooth root can give off pain in the nose. If the animal snorts frequently, it is best to consult a veterinarian in order not to miss the disease.
- Purring betrays love and good mood of pets. But if the purr almost turns into a roar, then the cat is expressing dissatisfaction. There are other reasons for feline purring. British scientists have found that a purring sound at frequencies of 20 and 140 hertz helps the animal to recover, promotes bone healing, relieves swelling, shortness of breath, and reduces pain.
- The cat usually meets the owners after absence with abrupt "cooing" meows. She was waiting, glad to return, so with all her appearance she communicates her feelings. At this moment, you need to caress the animal, otherwise it will be offended.
- A lingering meow can be produced by a worried cat, for example, if the owner leaves the house. The pet sits for a long time in front of a closed door and meows with a howl. When the owner returns home, the cat often follows on his heels and meows again, but with a different intonation - joyful, interspersed with plaintive, as if telling how lonely she was.
Despite the emphasized self-sufficiency, cats love and need us very much. If you look closely at the behavior of the animal and learn to understand it, you can become best friends with your cat, as well as not miss the problems with its health.
