Rex cats: popular breeds and their content
There are several varieties of Rex cats: Cornish, Devonian, Dutch, German and Bohemian. They all have one thing in common - an unusual curly coat, curly eyebrows and even a mustache.
The breed appeared by chance on one of the farms on the island of Cornwall. An ordinary-looking cat gave birth to a curly kitten with large ears and long legs. The owner of the farm decided to conduct an experiment and crossed the kitten with his own mother - this is how the Rex breed appeared. In the future, of course, the breeders did not interbreed related cats and cats, but gradually bred the breed.
These unusually beautiful animals have a friendly disposition, affectionate disposition and habits of dogs. With proper patience, cats and cats of the Rex breed can be trained, as they are very intelligent by nature.
Peculiarities
Rex cats and cats have a dense coat with curls or waves. Depending on the breed, the coat can be short or long.
Rexes have a slender, muscular body, long legs, a thin graceful tail and a small wedge-shaped head. The ears of animals are large and wide with rounded tips. The eyes are usually almond-shaped and of color to match the coat. An interesting feature of the breed is that the mustache and eyebrows are very curly, like the wool. Looking at such a cat, it becomes immediately clear that this is an expensive thoroughbred pet. The cost of such an animal ranges from 10 to 120 thousand rubles, depending on the color of the coat, genetics, class.
Rex's coat is dense and shiny, it sheds almost imperceptibly, but it also needs to be combed out periodically. A healthy pet has soft hair, curls of the correct shape, hair is not tangled, the body does not have bald patches.
As for character, then this breed is extremely friendly and affectionate. Rex cats and cats are very active, cheerful, do not like loneliness, they can “talk” with their owner for a long time and meaningfully.
If you decide to have such a pet, but at the same time you are often not at home, then it is better to think about the Rex having a friend - another cat or even a small breed of dog.
Rexes are also distinguished by a special intelligent disposition and unpretentiousness. It is unusual for them to jump on the table and beg for food, they do not mark their territory and do not even scratch themselves. Cornish Rexes are completely non-aggressive, but they will not tolerate aggression towards themselves, as they are very fond of affection. Rexes are great friends to calm and well-mannered children.
Another feature is the ability to train Rex to walk on a leash down the street or give a paw. These pets are extremely smart.
What breeds are there?
As already mentioned, there are several varieties of Rex: German, Dutch, Bohemian, Devon Rex and Cornish Rex. Let's dwell on each type in more detail.
German
The German Rex is a playful and affectionate animal that differs from its brethren in its coat. He has it wavy and velvety. The color of the coat and the pattern of a German can be absolutely any. Such a cat has a graceful body, of medium size and with a round head. The ears are small and neat, the eyes are almond-shaped, and the cheeks are prominent. The German Rex breed appeared in Germany in the 1950s and 60s at random, and it is still not known for certain where the breed of curly cats came from in this country.
Dutch
The Dutch Rex breed differs from the rest in its short and coarse curly hair. According to the description, this cat has a small head, large ears, long legs and a graceful body. The coat curls around the body in small, hard curls or short waves. As in the case of the German Rex, the color and pattern of the coat can be of any color.
Bohemian
The Bohemian Rex is a very interesting and aristocratic species of Rex. Its main difference is its long and thick wavy coat. The breed appeared in Czechoslovakia in the 80s of the last century, when kittens with curly long hair were born to a pair of Persian cats. Bohemians have a fluffy soft coat, neat ears and paws, a wide and short neck, rounded cheeks and a clear strong chin. Looking at such a cat, there is no doubt that this is a special breed.
The Bohemian Rex needs special care: thoroughly comb out the coat, add vitamins B6 to the diet, and bathe with a special shampoo and oil.
Devon rex
Devon Rex cats are native to Great Britain. They are loving, mobile and extremely friendly. Devon Rexes have an interesting appearance - in addition to short soft curly hair, they are attracted by a round head, large ears, thin neck, long body and legs. This cat is graceful and graceful, at the same time very playful and loves to run and jump, unlike, for example, the Scottish breed.
The coat color of Devon Rex can be any, the most common are solid black, white, gray, tortie point, bicolor and cinnamon.
These intelligent animals do not tolerate loneliness, and they constantly need physical activity. Therefore, before deciding to start such a breed, you should weigh the pros and cons.
Cornish Rex
This is an amazing and wonderful breed of cats. Their coat looks like a soft astrakhan fur coat with neat clear curls. This breed is divided into American and European, the differences in them only in the curve of the back and the shape of the head. The European Cornish has a straight back and a round head with relatively small ears. The American breed has an arched back and a small, pointed head.
Cornish kittens are friendly and loving. They easily get along with children, love outdoor games, walks. And they can't stand loneliness at all, so Rexes are not suitable for those people who are often not at home.
Content
Rex cats are in good health with proper nutrition, grooming, vaccinations and timely visits to the veterinarian. The wool of cats of this breed requires special care. It has a wavy and curly structure and must be carefully and thoroughly brushed out with a natural bristle brush no more than twice a week.
The short coats of Cornish and Devon Rex need to be washed periodically. The animal should be bathed no more than once every 1-2 months. When bathing, you can use a mild lanolin shampoo. You can not wipe the Rex with a towel, you should gently blot the coat and leave to dry naturally.
Sometimes you can use a special powder for cleaning wool instead of the usual shampoo.
After bathing, pets should treat their eyes, nose and ears. This should be done 1-2 times a week, since the ears of the Cornish and Devon Rex are open and often get dirty. Claws should be cut for cats once a month.
In addition, pets, like humans, need to take care of their teeth. Rexam can be brushed once a week with a baby toothbrush and special toothpaste, which can be bought at any pet store. This will keep your teeth healthy and free of plaque.
The peculiarities of the content of Rex include the fact that these animals do not like to change the environment, therefore, when moving to a new house, kittens may meow loudly for the first time and express dissatisfaction and misunderstanding. After adaptation, everything will return to normal. And also cats need a carrier for any trip, even if you transport the animal in your own car. In the carrier, the cat will feel safe and calm.
A healthy, well-groomed Rex pet can live up to 20 years... In this case, you should periodically show the animal to the veterinarian, give the necessary vaccinations and feed the prescribed food. Cats of this breed are very clean, they can take care of their fur for hours. But still, it is necessary to periodically bathe and comb them out.
Rexes have excellent natural immunity and do not have a single genetically predisposed disease.
Of course, we are talking about real Cornishes and Devons, which are bred only in proven and high-quality nurseries. But this will not save the pet from colds and cystitis. It is necessary to ensure that there are no drafts at home, and the cat should be taken out for a walk dressed (in cool weather and wind).
Breeding
Breeding thoroughbred Cornish and Devon Rex should be handled by trusted breeders. These animals can give birth to offspring after 1 year. In such catteries, as a rule, you can buy kittens as a pet without the right to breed, as well as premium and show-class kittens with the possibility of further breeding. These kittens have a higher cost.
You can cross Cornish Rex and Devon Rex both with each other within the breed, and with some other breeds, for example, the British Shorthair. But today breeders strive to preserve the true gene pool of cats and do not allow interbreeding with all breeds.
In addition, it is impossible to cross a Devon Rex and a Cornish Rex with each other, since kittens with straight hair are born from them.
You can buy a real thoroughbred Rex only in proven nurseries. Their cost ranges from 15-30 thousand rubles for a kitten without the right to breed. For this price, you will receive an excellent representative of the breed with excellent health, vaccinated and trained to the tray and scratching post.
