Today cats are the most popular pets. And Scottish cats are no exception.

This breed was formed relatively recently: about 50 years ago. Their first representatives appeared in Scotland and in this connection received such a name. But for a very long time, their appearance was considered a defect. They also had admirers, whom they immediately liked.

They became popular only in the late 90s, when they were introduced to the United States. A little earlier, in 1980, they decided on their standards in appearance, and after that everyone tried to breed just this type of cats, which were called Scottish Fold.

    Description of the breed

The breed is born with normal ears. And by the first month in some individuals they remain so, while in others they take a hanging position - this is what they stand out from the rest. This feature has always attracted interest.

It was formed as a result of a mutation, so it is difficult to guess how the kittens will be born.

From birth, they have round, strong heads and powerful mouths. Immediately striking is such a feature as chubby cheeks, in boys they are more noticeable. Ideal ears for this breed are usually small and droopy. They also stand out with their own eyes - they are round and large. Paired with such ears, a slightly surprised expression is obtained.

Kittens' paws are of average length, but quite powerful. Their weight is approximately 4-5 kg. There are specimens that can reach a weight of 7 kg or even more. The cats are always bigger.

Scottish cats have a very large palette of colors in color. A wide variety of shades can be found, but the most common are gray and purple.

They are also divided into long-haired (highlen-fold) and short-haired (Scottish fold).

All kittens have a very soft fluffy coat that needs quality care. To a greater extent, this applies to long-haired cats.

At the moment, the ticked color has gotten a lot of excitement, as it is very beautiful. Also, representatives of this color have a wonderful character.

    Temperament

With age, the character can become absolutely anything - it depends on the attitude towards the pet and on the environment in which it lives.

For this reason, those who grew up in a family where there are children and other animals grow up with a gentle disposition than individuals living alone. But despite this, even angry cats will show their gentle nature.... Aggression manifests itself in such individuals only when they feel threatened. In infancy, Scots are active and inquisitive. As they age, they may remain the same or become lazy.

In the latter case, most of the time, the pets will just roll around.

This breed has no serious flaws. But there is such a disadvantage as stubbornness. If, for example, the owner wants to teach his pet something, then problems may arise with this. For this reason, the person will have to be more patient.

Lop-eared cats are very attached to the house and their owner. They do not like when they are given any restrictions. These animals love to eat, so you need to monitor their diet so that the pets do not gain excess weight.

    Color description

A black (smoke-like) Scottish cat is one of the most common options. Its color is usually uniform, without any inclusions. If it is necessary for a pet to participate in exhibitions, then it is impossible to have any specks of a different color or a red tint (rust) in the color. For this reason, the jury can lower the marks or simply not admit it.

A slightly uneven color or light undercoat can only be found in babies, since such a shade is formed for quite a long time. When the color has already formed, the animal looks very impressive.

And the smooth-haired representatives have black pads and a nose.

    Care features

    Scottish cats need special care.

It consists of the items described below.

    • Air temperature. Because of their hair, animals do not tolerate hot weather, so the temperature in the room should not exceed 21 degrees Celsius. Periodically you need to ventilate the room.
    • the washing up... This procedure should be carried out 4 times a year, additionally before performances, during shedding and as the wool becomes dirty. A suitable temperature should not be higher than 38-40 degrees. When bathing, you need to use a special shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for the type of pet's coat. After the animal is washed, wipe it with a soft towel and dry it in a warm room with a hair dryer. Since this breed does not like water, in case of resistance it is necessary to use a dry shampoo that does not require rinsing. To do this, the pet needs to be combed, then applied and combed again.
    • Fur care. Scots need to be combed out in a timely manner, therefore, in short-haired pets, this procedure occurs 1-2 times a week, and in long-haired pets - 2-3 times. To comb the wool, a comb with dense teeth is used, and during the shedding - an effective combing device (furminator). Natural bristle combs and slicker brushes will not work as they injure the skin and break the coat.

Pets must not be trimmed, because the fur protects animals from cold and heat.

    • Nail care. Claws should be trimmed once every two weeks with special scissors. To do this, gently press on the pad with your finger and cut off the keratinized part, the angle should be right, the distance from the vessel is 2 mm. Then everything needs to be filed. If a living part has been accidentally damaged, then it is better to treat it with hydrogen peroxide. There must be a scratching post.
    • Eye and ear care. Due to the peculiar structure of the nasal septum, the nasolacrimal canals narrow. In this regard, pets have hanging tears. On contact with air, the discharge turns brown. For this reason, you must constantly clean your eyes with a damp cloth. From the ears, you need to remove plaque with cotton pads, which should be moistened with vegetable oil beforehand.
    • Tray... You need to accustom yourself to new things in a calm atmosphere. After the pet wakes up or has eaten, the kitten must immediately be put on the tray. Thus, he will learn faster.
    • Hygiene of the mouth. The Scots have a predisposition to gum disease. And they definitely need to brush their teeth once a week. This is done with a paste for animals and a special brush that is put on the finger. If the animal resists, then you need to wrap it in a towel or apply a germ spray after eating, which can be purchased at specialized stores.
    • Vaccination. If a person took a kitten that is already 3 months old, then he should be vaccinated. If this happened before, then the vaccination must be done independently. As soon as the kitten got into a new house, then within 10 days it is twice deduced with worms. Then the vaccine is given and repeated after 21 days. The next time this procedure should be performed in 12 months. Vaccinations for adult animals are carried out annually.
    • Parasite treatment... Once every three months, the animal should be given anti-worm agents. Wool from parasites must be processed once every 2 months. If the owner from an early age taught the pet to such procedures, then he will not have any problems. Otherwise, it is worth picking up the moment when the cat is in a good mood.
    • Feeding... The Scottish diet must be carefully monitored. He should not be given food from the table. It is impossible for him to have access to food - this can lead to excess weight, which will have a bad effect on health.

They are also prone to diseases of the digestive system.
