You can't just buy a Scottish Fold kitten and not care about keeping it. Like any other pet, it needs affection, proper care, education and balanced food. Otherwise, a docile cat with excellent health and smooth hair will not grow out of it.

Before purchase

Usually Scottish Fold kittens are separated from their mother-cat at 2-3 months of age, but breeders look for an owner immediately after their birth, because:

  • pets are quite expensive;
  • the future owner will need time to prepare the house for the kitten's move.

Essentials

Nothing supernatural is bought for a Scottish kitten. He needs bowls for water and food, a scratching post, a litter box, toys and a bed.

Bowls for food and water

Ideally, a kitten should have three bowls: the first is for water, the second is for wet food, and the third is for dry food. In order not to create a pile of them in the kitchen, they manage with two shallow bowls of metal or ceramic with low sides, provided that one of them (the one for the food) is two-section. At the same time, a cup of water is kept at a distance from it.

Lounger

A secluded corner will be equipped for the kitten so that he can play alone, rest from everyone and everything. The main thing in it is the bed. What it will be depends on the taste of the owner. They buy either a separate house, and a scratching post to it, or a house with a scratching post, made in the same design, or a rug (an old darned one is fine).

Cat litter

There are several types of cat litter. The appropriate one is chosen after reading the advantages and disadvantages of the model you like from the table below.

Tray type

Dignity

disadvantages

Plastic without mesh

Easy access, affordable price, easy filling replacement, compact size

Scattering of filler (use is impossible without it), does not retain odors

Mesh tray

No filler, no source of contamination for the coat

Bad smell, washing after each visit

Toilet with sides

Easy cleaning, proper use, reliability

Larger size compared to other models

Auto

Lack of unpleasant odors, automatic disinfection without the participation of the owner, saving on filler

High price, possible fear in a cat from seeing the process of cleaning the litter box

Closed

Smell retention, no dirt and debris

Expensive, improper use - for sleep

The ideal option is a tray with sides, but the owner has the right to choose another model based on his own preferences, taste and budget.

Care advice

Sometimes a Scottish Fold kitten appears in the house before 2–3 months of age. If he is only a month old, they listen to the recommendations of the person from whom they buy the pet. Often they are traditional, and the only thing that has discrepancies is in nutrition (in four weeks of life, he forms stable eating habits).

Eye care

Almost from birth, kittens have their eyes cleaned in order to quickly accustom them to hygiene. The procedure is carried out every 5-7 days. To do this, they take a cotton pad in their hands, moisten it in water and gently treat the corners of the eyes, the upper and lower parts of the eyeball with it.

As they grow older, the frequency of eye care changes: an adult cat cleans up without the help of the owner.

If the kitten has suppuration in the eye area, the procedure is carried out more often. During the day, the eyes are treated with plain water or a weak solution of chamomile two or three times. In a solution (in water), a cotton swab or soft tissue is moistened, and then it is applied to the inflamed area. If the inflammation does not go away within a week, contact your veterinarian.

Claw cutting

From the first days, the kitten is taught to trim the claws. In cats of this breed, claws on the front legs are trimmed. A haircut is carried out once a month, cutting off the tip of the nail (no more than two millimeters) with nail scissors or a cat claw. By cutting off more, there is a great risk of damaging the blood vessel and greatly scaring the pet.

Hair care

Scottish Folds do the grooming themselves. Although they are clean cats, you cannot let everything go by itself. At the pet store, they purchase a special wool brush with short and fine teeth or a silicone glove. The hair is combed once every two weeks to prevent lumps from entering the stomach.

If the pet is shedding, the coat is tidied up more often - one brushing per week.

The main rule of caring for a Scottish kitten: you cannot bathe him unless absolutely necessary. Sometimes he gets very dirty or picks up fleas while walking on the street. You cannot bathe a kitten if he is not even 2 months old (it is better to protect him, if possible, from contamination). If you cannot do without bathing, then warm water is poured into the basin (the optimum temperature is + 36 ° C). The pet is washed with the addition of a special shampoo.

After thorough rinsing, the wool is dried by blotting the water with a towel to prevent colds and hypothermia.

Sometimes one bathing is enough to greatly frighten the Scottish Fold and forever discourage her from swimming. She is afraid of the noise of the water. To distract her from him, they put rubber toys in the water. To prevent water from getting into the ears, cover them with a cotton swab. To prevent irritation of the mucous membrane, oil drops are instilled into the eyes.

You cannot wash a kitten using human products. Otherwise, the coat will deteriorate and the skin will become inflamed.

Upbringing

A young cat is not only looked after, but also brought up. If you do not teach her to the toilet and scratching posts, then later she will dirtiest everything and destroy all the furniture in the house.

Toilet

A lot depends on what kind of filler is chosen for cat litter. For quick getting used to it, sand is not poured into the tray. Use natural wood filler or compressed into granules. For the first few weeks, do not wash it often and thoroughly so that the pet can easily find it by smell.

Scratching post

If, from the first day in a new house, you accustom a kitten to a scratching post, having matured, it will not scratch furniture, tear clothes and peel the wallpaper on the wall. To do this, they show a new object to an animal, tie a toy to it, attracting attention, or sprinkle a catnip scent on the soft upholstery of the claw-rake.

Vaccinations

Scottish Folds are vaccinated according to the schedule. You can't refuse vaccinations even if your cat doesn't visit the street. Otherwise, there is a great risk of contracting a dangerous disease. Before going to the veterinarian, be sure to drink antihelminthic drugs. A healthy kitten is being taken to the reception.

Power features

Carefully think over the diet for the kitten. It must be balanced. He is fed dry and wet food or natural food.

Age

Feeding frequency per day

up to 4 months

4-5 times

older than 4 months

3-4 times

Experienced breeders feed the Scottish Fold dry and wet premium or super premium food. They are balanced and contain minerals and vitamins. Choose a special food for kittens, with a corresponding inscription on the package. Otherwise, normal development will be threatened, and the daily rate will be more than necessary.

Pedigree cats are rarely fed with ordinary food. Table food will not work. We'll have to cook one thing for the household, and another for the kitten. Buckwheat, rice, oatmeal are cooked for him in milk, without adding butter. Give some ground beef with oatmeal and yolk. Fermented milk products are gradually introduced as a substitute for milk. Kittens are fed with boiled vegetables and boiled offal.

The fish is given no more than once a week, in a boiled form. Do not include herring, sweets, smoked meats, sausages and corned beef in the diet.

Whether the Scottish Fold cat is properly kept or not depends on its lifespan and character.
