The turtle is not the kind of pet that is waiting for the owner at the door and is always happy to be caressed by him. This is especially true of the red-eared turtle - an animal with character. However, many owners of such turtles try to seize their love and, out of good intentions, provide walks around the apartment. Let's figure out if the turtle itself needs it.

Do turtles need to walk?

The answer to this question is yes, it is necessary, but much depends on the conditions of detention. This walk has nothing to do with crawling around the house. As a rule, an obligatory attribute for the life of a turtle in captivity is an ultraviolet lamp, which must be changed at least once a year. This device replaces the sun for the animal, which is vital for the correct formation of the shell (especially for young individuals) and the prevention of rickets.

Such lamps are not cheap, and the available Chinese copies, according to special tests published on the network, practically do not emit the required level of ultraviolet radiation, that is, they are simple dummies.

If the owner is not ready to spend money on expensive equipment, then in this case the turtle cannot do without walking in the sun.

Is it possible to release it in the house and why?

A turtle is not a toy, but a living creature, and you should not expect that it will rush into the arms of its owner as soon as it is released from the terrarium. Most likely, she will simply crawl into a distant secluded corner, from where it can be problematic to get her.

If the turtle is provided with the correct conditions of detention, including the presence of a terrarium with a volume of at least 100 liters per individual, an external filter, an incandescent lamp for heating and an ultraviolet lamp, then it does not need room walks.

All these conditions imitate its natural habitat, and if you supplement the care with proper nutrition and regular water changes, then it will feel quite comfortable.

If the owner certainly wants to let the turtle crawl, then this should be done under strict control. That being said, keep in mind that there are many dangers awaiting your pet on the pet's floor.

  • The turtles' slowness stories do not apply to the red-eared species. These turtles, especially at a young age, are very nimble. They are able to climb into a dark corner, where they can accidentally be crushed or injured by the tenants of the apartment. Even a brave individual, confidently feeling on the floor, may accidentally end up under the slipper of a gaping owner.
  • The little turtle is a tasty morsel for cats and dogs who will not hesitate to taste the shell.
  • It is generally not recommended to touch young turtles with your hands, as they still have a rather weak forming shell. Accidental crushing can lead to cracks and other serious damage.
  • These animals have a rather aggressive character and very strong jaws. An attempt to get the turtle out of the terrarium for a walk can end up with a bite of a finger and instinctively throwing it against the wall, which is also fraught with a threat to the pet's life.
  • Additional traits of their character are curiosity and gluttony. A turtle walking on the floor can eat something very harmful or even dangerous for it, for example, a small carnation.
  • Walking on the floor can lead to colds. It is our feet that are accustomed to the room temperature of the floor covering, and the turtle is kept under an incandescent lamp at a temperature of 30-32 degrees, and such a sharp transition from heat to a cold floor, and indeed to cool air for it, can adversely affect its health.

Correct walking

If the pet owner lives in the city, then you can take the red dog in a basin to the park, but in no case leave it unattended. Place the basin in the sun, but shade one side so that the animal can hide if the sun suddenly gets bored with it.

A great option is walking in the country... Some owners for the summer season equip a special pool for their turtles with the ability to go on land. But this section of water must be strictly fenced off, and a reliable house must be located on the territory of the temporary turtle dwelling, where the pet will not only sleep, but also hide from wild animals and birds. Alas, an unusual nimble turtle can attract the attention of even a simple voracious crow.

By the way, just for this purpose, a reliable roof can be built over the pool from a chain-link mesh: it will protect the animal from predators and will not block the sun.

As a last resort, you can try to walk the turtle on an open balcony if it is well lit by the sun. But do not forget to ensure that such a walk is under strict control.

You cannot go out with this animal into the yard and let it go to the grass.

  • the turtle will run away, because as soon as the owner turns away for a second, its dark shell will hide in a heap of dry leaves.
  • in the yard, she will be able to eat something dangerous, and a cigarette butt is not the worst thing, but poison, scattered in order to eliminate rodents, or grass treated with an anti-mite agent, will inevitably lead to the death of the animal.
