Hair tinting after highlighting
Hair highlighting is a widespread beauty procedure. And this is not surprising: it suits ladies of any age, refreshes the image, emphasizes the structure of the haircut. However, when dark hair is highlighted, the strands are not quite the color that we would like. In this case, hair toning will help you.
What it is?
Toning is called a gentle dyeing procedure that allows you to achieve the desired shade of a strand. It is performed when there is a significant contrast between the base hair color and lightened curls, as well as in the presence of yellowness. After toning, the transitions from tone to tone become smoother, the impression of a sun glare in the hair is created.
Do not confuse toning with coloring, and indeed with traditional hair coloring. This procedure is significantly different from them. The fact is that when it is carried out, dyes are used that do not penetrate deep into the hair shaft, but remain on its surface. Therefore, the effect of toning lasts no more than 2 months, and with each shampooing, the color becomes paler. Sometimes it disappears in just a couple of weeks.
After you have done highlighting, do not tint your hair on the same day. Give them a little "rest" for at least a week and a half. If you overexpose the bleaching product and the curls become dry, "straw", you will first have to undergo a course of treatment with masks and other nutrients. Hair must restore its structure, only then they will be able to fully accept the coloring pigment of the toning agent.
The toning procedure is not as complicated in technology as highlighting, and you can even do it yourself, at home. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
Advantages and disadvantages
Of course, this procedure, like any other, has its pros and cons. Let's take a look at them.
Pros:
- the compositions used for toning are gentle and do not spoil the hair - many of them contain vitamins and minerals that moisturize, contribute to the appearance of a natural shine, and enhance the color saturation;
- you can do toning with your own hands - no professional training is required here;
- most of the products for the procedure are very affordable;
- the color palette of toners is huge and you can easily choose the shade that suits you;
- sometimes, after discoloration, the strands begin to "give off" with an ugly yellowness - toning will again come to your aid, which will eliminate this problem;
- eliminates too obvious contrast between bleached curls and main hair color;
- tint products have almost no contraindications;
- if the procedure is carried out regularly, the color will “accumulate” in the hair shafts and their color will become brighter;
- toning after discoloration will help to give the blonde exactly the shade you desired: ash, golden, pinkish, sandy, with the effect of gray hair, etc.;
- if you buy toners of different colors, you can change your image at least every week, because if you wish, the toning agent can be washed off in several stages with ordinary shampoo;
- tinting can be done for any hair length;
- there is no age limit.
As you can see, there are a lot of positive aspects. But in every barrel of honey there is a fly in the ointment. Therefore, consider the cons of toning:
- short-term effect requiring correction at least once every 3-4 weeks;
- toning is unable to change hair color by more than a couple of tones;
- with each application of the shampoo, the color fades;
- does not paint over gray hair (with the exception of special toners intended for such hair);
If used incorrectly, it can "lie" on the hair unevenly.
Design
A very important detail when choosing a color for a tinting preparation is an orientation towards your initial external data: base hair color, skin and eye color. If you plan to carry out the procedure in the salon, the master stylist will surely show you a palette layout with curls painted in different tones, and you can “try on” them to your face. If you want to experiment at home, when choosing the right shade, use the following tips:
- the closer the toner color is to the native color of your hairstyle, the more likely it is to get an excellent result;
- for blondes, whose skin has a "warm" shade, golden tones are recommended: honey, wheat, sand, caramel;
- girls with red or light brown hair are perfect copper tones, up to terracotta;
- “Cold” blondes with marbled skin should opt for ash, platinum and linen blonde;
- if your goal is to obtain the effect of burnt-out strands, choose the lightest tone possible (but not from the “cold”, but from the “warm” palette).
How to tint?
Next, we will consider the types of toning, as well as the products offered on the cosmetic market for this procedure.
Depending on the intensity of staining and color fastness, toning is divided into the following types.
- Lung - this is a kind of experiment conducted by the master in order to understand whether the chosen shade suits you or not. The dye is quickly washed off the hair.
- Sparing - carried out by using tinted shampoos, sprays containing care components that will help maintain and improve the health of your hair after highlighting. Will require updating after 3-4 weeks.
- Intensive - the most persistent.The dye fills in all the empty spaces between the scales of the hair shaft, providing it with maximum protection and color. When carrying out it, use a special ammonia-free paint-tonic or other similar means. The result can last up to 3 months.
And now let's talk about what kind of toning products are available on the cosmetic market, what are their features and which companies produce them.
Tint shampoo
It is used to give the highlighted strands a light shade. With its help, it will be possible to change the color by just a couple of tones, since it does not dye the hair, but only enhances the intensity of the color. That is why experts advise choosing such a product with a color scheme close to the base shade. When using a tinted shampoo once a week, the "accumulation effect" will work and the hair tone will become brighter. If the experiment with the choice of the desired color was unsuccessful, the product can be easily washed out of the hair with ordinary shampoo.
Separately, I would like to say about the purple shampoo, which is used against yellowness. When applied correctly, your discolored strands will turn ashy.
Carefully read the instructions before applying it to your hair, and strictly follow it, unless, of course, you don't want to get bluish curls instead of ashen.
Among the manufacturers of this type of cosmetics, the following are especially quoted:
- Russian product "Tonic" from "Rokolor" has in the lineup a remedy for yellowness and 9 tinted shampoos (from blonde to chocolate);
- "Irida M" - also made in Russia, rich tint palette contains almost all colors - from pearls to garnet;
- domestic brand Kapous released a line of shampoos "Life Color", in which there are 5 tones, rather intense - the products are intended not only for home, but also for professional use;
- "Purple" yellow neutralizers are available from companies such as Estel, Londa, Schwarzkopf.
Tonic
If you want a more lasting intense color, then choose a tonic instead of shampoo. This product not only stays on the hair for almost a month, but also gives it extra shine, moisturizes and strengthens the structure.
Recommended brands include:
- Estel, which produces not one, but two whole lines of these products: with keratin (17 colors), as well as with mango extract and UV filter (18 colors);
- The aforementioned "Tonic" did not stand aside, in its assortment there are more than 30 tint tonics, among which there are products for gray hair.
Tinting paint
It is used for dyeing both all hair and individual strands. It remains on the hair for 50-60 days, and the color does not fade as much as when using the two above-mentioned products.
A distinctive feature of the product is its ammonia-free composition, which explains its gentle effect. And the fact that the color is not as persistent as when using ordinary hair dye is even a plus - if you suddenly want to radically change the image and repaint, it will be much easier to "etch" such a dye than a persistent paint.
Most Recommended Brands:
- of course Estel, in whose palette there is a great variety of toner paints containing olive oil;
- Londa - more than 40 colors in assortment;
- for lovers of "acidic" shades brand Igora prepared a bright palette with the most unimaginable tones;
- L'oreal paris also did not stand aside - his line of "Casting Creme Gloss" is presented in any supermarket in the city.
Mousse, foam, spray
In order to change the image from time to time, giving the highlighted strands a particular shade, use a tint spray. It belongs to unstable drugs and is washed out with shampoo in 2-3 applications. Some sprays contain vitamins, thus caring for bleached hair.
Mousse and foam are more persistent, withstand 6-8 washes. Recommended brands: Schwarzkopf, Igora.
How to do it?
So, here we come close to the question of how to make hair toning after highlighting at home. Of course, at least a week should pass between these procedures, and preferably two. Coloring, even with gentle preparations, is still stress for the hair, and for those who have undergone discoloration, it is doubly stress.
Therefore, during the "waiting" time, make masks, nourish your hair with oils, conditioners, moisturize it.
Next, select the desired shade. The subtleties of the choice were mentioned above.
And now - step by step instructions for doing toning with your own hands.
- Read the manufacturer's manual first. In order to avoid possible unpleasant consequences, strictly adhere to the instructions. If it is said to keep the product on your hair for 15 minutes - keep it exactly 15.
- Overexposure of the product may result in more intense color than expected. In this case, immediately wash your hair using your regular shampoo - more often than not, this is enough for a couple of tones to "go away". If, on the contrary, the resulting shade seems too pale, next time add 5-10 minutes to the waiting time.
- For any hair coloring, an allergy test must first be carried out. Take a drop of the drug of your choice, apply it to the bend of the elbow from the inside and wait 15 minutes. If the skin is not reddened or itchy sensations do not appear, you can start toning.
- Dampen your hair with water and wipe off excess moisture with a towel. Curls should remain moist.
- Wear protective rubber gloves.
- Comb with a fine-toothed comb. There should be no knots or tangles in the hair.
- Apply the tinting agent according to the instructions for use.
- Cover your hair with a plastic cap or bag to enhance the effectiveness of the procedure.
At the end of the recommended holding time, wash off the preparation with warm water, without using detergent. Rinse your curls until completely clear water appears.
Reviews
Reviews about toning highlighted hair are mostly positive:
- the hair color became deeper, richer, a beautiful shade appeared with tints and highlights;
- brunettes and brown-haired women who have discolored strands most often mention purple shampoo, which neutralizes yellowness, in a very positive way: the yellow tint is gone, instead of it, an ashy one has appeared, which looks much better;
- textured haircuts for medium and short hair (cascade, rhapsody, ladder, pixie, square, garcon, gavroche and others) look more voluminous after the toning procedure;
- on long hair, tinted ombre looks very beautiful, creating a smooth transition from color to color;
- many mention the fact that toning allows you to change the image almost every month, especially if unstable dyes are used;
- lovers of shocking, this procedure is also to their liking, because many manufacturers produce lines of products in all colors of the rainbow, and you can experiment with coloring, without thinking about how to get rid of an overly bright color later.
However, there are also negative reviews. Most often they are based on overexposure of the product on the hair and, as a result, getting too dark a shade. Sometimes it happens that the highlighting ceases to be noticeable at all and an almost uniform color is obtained. That is why do not keep the dye on your hair longer than the manufacturer recommends. This is exactly the case when less is more.
Another situation in which toning spoiled the mood is choosing the wrong shade. This is especially true for situations when the procedure is carried out independently at home, and the product was chosen "by eye", without checking it for compatibility with the base hair color and your color type.
Sometimes the yellowness does not "go away". Most often this happens when a brunette or dark brown-haired woman discolours the strands.The main pigment of such hair is very strong, persistent, and it may not work at all to "etch" the yellow tint to the end. In this case, there is only one way out: stop striving for a platinum tone and tint the strands in a darker blond.
These are the reviews left by the young ladies who made the hair toning. To carry out this procedure or not - the choice is yours, but it will not be superfluous to consult a specialist. Ask the master who did the highlighting for you which tinting agents are best in his opinion and why, which one is right for you; ask for a shade recommendation. If possible, look at the layouts of different toners, “try on” the colors to your face.
If you are not confident in your own abilities, it is better to carry out the procedure in the salon. The saying “the cheapskate pays twice” should not be tested in practice.
