Siamese rat: features and care at home
Until recently, only cats were Siamese, now rats have joined them. These cute little animals look like cats not only in color, but also in their peculiar character. Increasingly, the Siamese rat becomes a pet, equally loved by both adults and children. If you are not yet familiar with these amazing animals, then it's time to fix this ridiculous situation.
Description
Rats do not have breeds, they differ in color, size of ears and other external characteristics. Siamese in their color are very similar to a similar breed from the feline family. Cream is the main color. There is a darker shade on the nose, legs and tail, most often chocolate, but also blue and mink. Depending on the color of these spots, there are 3 main types of Siamese:
- seal point matches brown spots;
- blue point - this is a gray color of the spots;
- mink point corresponds to a blue tint.
As for the color of the eyes, there are 2 options: black and red. According to the type of wool and structural features of the auricles, many varieties of Siamese rats are distinguished.
Spots, or points, do not appear in cubs immediately, but only after they reach two months of age. It may also be that the points do not appear at all or have an unexpressed color. Such representatives of the Siamese family at exhibitions receive low points, and in general such a color is considered a vice.
The Siamese color is found in many other varieties. The most popular is the Siamese Dumbo. These animals are characterized by large, very cute ears. The combination with a unique color makes these animals popular and loved by many.
Care
The Siamese rat is a clean and demanding animal. For her to feel good, be cheerful, friendly and healthy, it is necessary to provide her with comfortable living conditions.
- It is best to use a cage with iron rods as a house. The aquarium should be discarded, because in such conditions the animal will feel uncomfortable.
- Siamese are active animals, therefore, a large number of leisure facilities should be located in the cage. It is imperative to place the wheel, ladders, tunnels, hammocks can be added to it.
- A house is needed for rest.
- The feeder should be regularly cleaned of food debris. You should not allow the presence of stale food in it, the use of which can cause poisoning of the animal.
- Siam loves water procedures, therefore it is advisable to install an appropriate bathing container in the cage.
- The toilet tray can be filled with torn paper, hay, sawdust. You need to change it several times a week. In this case, the animal will not become a source of an unpleasant odor.
- Rats need to grind their teeth. For these purposes, you can purchase a special device or offer the animal a mineral stone.
- The Siamese rat does not have to be in the cage all the time. It must be released every day for at least half an hour.
The diet
Cereals form the basis of the daily diet of these animals. Such a product must be constantly present in the feeder. You can buy ready-made formula for rats. As a variety, you can add the following products to their menu:
- boiled meat low in fat, chicken is best;
- boiled yolk;
- pure yogurt, low in fat and without any additives;
- fruits and dried fruits are treats for animals, but not citrus fruits, as they can cause allergies.
Such additions to the main diet can be added no more than twice a week.
Features of behavior
The nature of these animals cannot be called simple. Vigilance is characteristic of the Siamese. If the animal has a bad upbringing, then it can make attempts to bite its owner. This behavior should be suppressed and try to find a common language with the pet as soon as possible. To do this, you can use the following tips:
- from childhood, the animal needs to be taken in your arms, talk to it, call it by name, so to speak, tame it and establish contact;
- the aggressive behavior of the rat can be stopped by light blows in the face, shouting or clicking on the nose;
- from the first minutes of communication, you need to show that you are the main one.
Reproduction
The Siamese gene is recessive. This means the following: cubs with this color will be obtained only if both partners have this color.
If only one partner is a Siamese, then the cubs can turn out to be anything but Siamese.
The breeding process of Siamese rats at home is simple. To get healthy, beautiful offspring, you must adhere to the following rules.
- For mating, you need to select rats older than 3 months. The selected pair must be placed in a cage for several days.
- Pregnancy lasts a maximum of 24 days. The expectant mother should eat well, protein foods must be included in the diet.
- The approach of childbirth may be indicated by spotting and the animal's desire to retire.
- From 8 to 18 pups can be born. Females are good mothers, they surround their offspring with love and care.
- While the female is feeding and caring for her cubs, they should not be handled. Otherwise, she may refuse them.
