Cornices for the kitchen: a variety of models and selection rules
The kitchen is a sacred place for many people. It is there that households most often gather to have breakfast, dinner or just drink tea together, discussing the accumulated problems at the same time, or, conversely, to share a joyful event. And it is there that guests are most often invited, since in modern houses and apartments the kitchen and living room are often combined, not fenced off from each other by a blank wall. Therefore, most people strive to approach the arrangement of this room as carefully as possible, where the cornice plays a rather significant role.
Peculiarities
The cornice is a necessary decorative element for almost any room. It is designed to play up the window opening as best as possible, to emphasize the style of the given room and, of course, serves as a support for curtains and tulle. The cornice for the kitchen always adds comfort to the environment, because curtains and tulle cannot be hung without it., which means that the situation as a whole will seem uncomfortable and more formal.
Kitchen specimens, depending on the design features, are usually subdivided into several types. Depending on the number of suspended canvases, the cornices are divided into single-row, double-row and three-row. There are also four-row types, but they are usually not used to decorate kitchen openings. Light curtains or tulle can be hung on single-row eaves. The two-row type of curtain rods is suitable for two-layer compositions, usually consisting of curtains and tulle. Three-row types allow you to simultaneously place curtains, tulle and lambrequin.
According to their design features, the cornices are subdivided into round (rod) and profile ones. On the rods, the curtains are held by means of freely sliding rings, the diameter of which is significantly larger than the diameter of the rod. Rings can be inserted into the fabric itself or attached with hooks. In the profile cornices, the curtains are held by hooks, one end of which moves freely along the inner path, and the other holds a small loop of the curtain.
Profile types, depending on the purpose, are divided into straight and flexible cornices. The latter are suitable for creating a curved line of suspension. Most often they are used in rooms with bay windows. The design of the profile cornices can be either open or decorated with a panel. Moreover, the panel can be present not only on straight, but also on flexible cornices.
The plank not only perfectly hides the aesthetically unattractive hooks, but is also a harmonious continuation of the cornice.
Views
Today there are many different types of kitchen curtain rods, differing also in style.
- The most common view is, of course, open. rod cornice... It will fit perfectly into almost any kitchen, regardless of the design style, the main thing is to choose the option that suits you. Most often, an option is selected in the kitchen, consisting constructively of one or two rods, at the ends of which there are always tips corresponding to the style. These types of cornices are attached either to the ceiling or to the wall. The wall-mounted version is used more often, as it visually looks better, since the corners on which 1 or 2 rods are attached are hidden.
- String cornice is an equally popular type among cornices. Its device is almost similar to the rod, the only difference is in the thickness of the part holding the curtains. Between the two corners, instead of a rod, there is a tightly stretched string, both ends of which are quite firmly fixed and do not protrude beyond the limits of the mounts.
This type is suitable only for light curtains like tulle or fabrics with a low density, because the string is thin and therefore it will not hold "heavy" curtains, it will sag or break.
Curtains on a stringed copy are held most often with the help of eyelets - rings fixed to the fabric. This type is more suitable for high-tech and minimalist kitchens. In addition, they are perfect for narrow window openings.
- Perfect for Provence-style kitchens and classic design stained glass (telescopic) cornice... It will not take up much space, as it is attached either directly to the frame, or between the side surfaces of window openings. This type is a kind of a single-row rod curtain rod, since its basis is a rod, fixed with the help of special fasteners between two brackets. When installing the curtain rod on the frame, the fastening method may vary; some manufacturers produce specimens that are fixed using a method that is more gentle on the surface, namely, double-sided tape.
A rather striking difference of this type from the rod cornice is the possibility of increasing its length by extending the main rod. The pipe, like a telescope, extends to the required length, so it is unnecessary to calculate the opening width up to 1 cm, which is undoubtedly a huge plus.
- Tire (profile) cornice in appearance it resembles the letter P. Inside the profile strip there are grooves, similar to tracks, along which the hooks move. The ends of the bus can be either straight or rounded. The latter type is most often equipped with a decorative strip, therefore such cornices are often called baguette. The method of fastening this type depends on the design solution. Most often, tire curtain rods are mounted on the ceiling surface, but you can also find options that are perfectly attached to the wall. This type is also often used as a hidden option in a stretch ceiling.
The profile cornice is suitable for large wide windows with deep openings. This type of cornice will look great in a bright large kitchen, combined with a loggia.
- Electric cornice is a kind of tire type, but only unlike the latter, this option has a more complex design and a more modern appearance. A motor is located on the side of the curtain rail, which allows the curtain panels to be moved without manual force. This cornice is controlled using a remote control or an application in a smartphone.
It is indispensable for rooms with difficult-to-reach arrangement of window openings, as well as for kitchens in which the window has a non-standard shape.
Important! A simpler option for a kitchen with non-standard window openings is a flexible cornice. It is often installed under a suspended or suspended ceiling with fixation both on the wall and on the ceiling that has not been reconstructed.
Materials (edit)
The species variety of cornices allows each buyer to choose an option according to the style of the kitchen. The combination of the eaves design with kitchen decor elements is undoubtedly important, but the material of manufacture should also be taken into account, since it is not a problem to find your favorite eaves option in different materials today. Metal, plastic or wooden structures have both advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when choosing.
Let's consider them in more detail.
- Metal curtain rods durable, not afraid of temperature changes and resistant to the effects of chemicals used to clean them. In addition, they are perfectly combined with many styles, because on sale you can find both a variety of colors and designs.
The only drawback of these products is their high price.
- Plastic curtain rods are perhaps the most popular options. Plastic is exactly the material from which the most modifications and colors are made. Plastic options are resistant to moisture, washing chemicals and color fading. Although the service life of a plastic structure is quite long, and they are much cheaper than metal specimens, such products also have their drawbacks - a low degree of strength.
- Wooden cornices are less popular for many reasons. Although the material is environmentally friendly, and to increase its service life, it is coated with a special compound, it still cannot be called too stable. Wooden products do not tolerate high humidity, temperature fluctuations and exposure to chemicals when washing. They need excellent ventilation and very gentle care, which is costly and time-consuming, so wood curtain rods are rarely installed in the kitchen.
Selection Tips
The correct choice of cornice is a guarantee of a good mood, which is why it is so important not to be mistaken either with the texture or with the design of the product when choosing an option. Everything will have to be taken into account: the design of the room, its size, and the density of the curtains, and, of course, do not forget about the practicality of the chosen option. There are a few tips worth paying attention to.
- Rod metal curtain rods look great in a high-tech or classic kitchen. They do not overload the atmosphere and go well with interior items. But when choosing, you should avoid options with pretentious tips and ornate rods, since options with a simple decor and a smooth texture are more suitable for these styles. In addition, it is somewhat more difficult to care for such a cornice than for a product that is simpler in decor and smooth in texture.
- For kitchens decorated in Provence or country style, of course, simple ones are more suitable wooden cornices not overloaded with details... But you can also hang plastic ones, since you can find on sale options with an imitation of a wooden texture.
- When choosing, it is worth considering and density of curtains... Metal products are able to withstand a significant weight of curtains, which, of course, is important for rooms located on the ground floor, as well as for those that are too close to neighboring buildings. The only exceptions are metal string cornices, they will withstand only a thin, almost weightless fabric.
Tire plastic cornices with fixing to the ceiling contribute to the visual enlargement of the room. This is especially important if the ceilings in the kitchen are not higher than 2.5 m. If the ceilings are high or visual perception is not so important, then you can stop at other options.
The telescopic cornice is a good solution for a small window with a sink located in the lower area.
So tulle, and most often it is she who hangs, will not interfere, but at the same time the window will be closed from prying eyes.
- Flexible profile curtain rods They look good in kitchens with a balcony door, with panoramic or wide windows, as well as in rooms where the walls are semicircular. They fit perfectly into any style and perfectly decorate arched, lancet, corner and bay windows.
How to fix it?
The visual perception and the service life of the product depend on how and in what place the cornice will be fixed. Almost any type of cornice is fixed either on the ceiling surface or on the wall.
Both methods are equally good, the main thing is to choose the right fasteners and not use used bolts, brackets and other parts necessary for installation.
It is necessary to take into account both the type of surface on which the selected option will be attached, and the length of the product. The longer the cornice, the more likely it is that additional fasteners will be required. This rule especially applies to metal products and cornices, on which heavy curtains will hang.
The standard calculation of the required length of the kitchen cornice is reduced to measuring the width of the window opening, to which add from 25 to 40 cm.But if you want to visually expand the window opening, then the length margin given above can be increased. To visually reduce the width of the window, the cornice is selected with a smaller margin in length, in this case the numbers vary within 15-25 cm. For mini options installed on the frame, the length should always be equal to the width of the frame.
The structure of the eaves must be higher than the window frame, the minimum gap is 5 cm. The minimum distance from the wall, regardless of the method of fastening, must be at least 10 cm.
Regardless of which method of fastening was chosen, the cornice must be installed not only in the right place, but also well fixed. Otherwise, at best, he will not be able to hold the curtains, and at worst, he will simply fall.
