A rustic kitchen can turn out to be atmospheric and warm, even if it is located in an apartment in the middle of a metropolis. The main thing is to imbue with the spirit of the rural lifestyle, everyday life, decor and reflect this in the interior design.

Peculiarities

Rustic style is not a set of cliches, but a direction rich in possibilities and ways of expression. The style has recognizable features.

  • Some carelessness in decoration. You don't need everything to be perfect, according to the template and standards. If there are slight abrasions on the walls, and the beams on the ceiling are not perfectly symmetrical, this is absolutely normal. Wallpaper can be with an old-fashioned print, which is also quite appropriate for a rural style.
  • Rough furniture made from natural materials. Plastic, chrome and glass will not fit into such a design. Furniture should be purely with wooden facades, which are either not painted at all, or painted in natural colors. It should give the impression that the furniture was made in the village by the owner himself.
  • Many household items and handmade decor. Knitted or woven tablecloths, various crafts, towels, cutting boards, ceramics - fill your kitchen with hand-made: it is a striking sign of style.
  • Abundance of textiles. Homemade rugs, patchwork or knitted, look perfect in a rural kitchen. The emphasis is on curtains, tablecloths, pillows for a bench or kitchen sofa, towels.

The style can be copied from magazine photos: such works inspire, develop "observation".But the rustic-style kitchen interior will turn out to be alive and organic only if the author introduces individuality, traits and features of his family into it, which can be expressed in things and everyday life.

Color spectrum

All shades of natural materials are inherent in the color scheme: wood, earth, grass, foliage, flowers, sky - everything that makes up a natural ecological environment and serves as a coloristic inspiration for decorating a room. The colors are calm, pastel, muted. Bright ones such as red, yellow and orange are allowed, but in dosage. In a rustic setting, sharp contrast should be avoided.

If, for example, an eye-catching chandelier appears in a beautiful natural setting, this will disharmonize the image of the room. All transitions should be smooth, all elements of the kitchen should be "friends" with each other.

Home Sweet Home author Deborah Needleman believes that a home should be filled with emotion. Without this, he loses the essence of a warm refuge, a reflection of the characters of the household. Feel free to add your own finishing touches to the style you are recreating. The writer also considers it a waste of time that people strive to impeccably maintain the style, avoiding episodic inclusions of other directions in it, especially if the styles are related.

Therefore, if you recreate in your own kitchen the style of your native village, Slavic and understandable from infancy, do not be afraid to make an intersection with Provence or even bring something of an Alpine chalet into the interior. A bunch of lavender will easily get along in the same kitchen with a bunch of decorative sunflowers. There will be no color dissonance, since the rustic style is not a palette examined under a magnifying glass, but life itself, in all its natural diversity (and a variety of colors as well).

Finishing options

It is necessary to take into account the initial data. If this is a kitchen-living room, then the combined room with two functional zones should be stylistically verified. And such a transition should not imply the presence of chrome surfaces, metallic, glass partition between zones, rather, more inherent in the high-tech style.

A small kitchen can be transformed, and a modest area will fit a corner of your favorite country house. This, by the way, is a good way to divert attention from a small footage. Remember that the furniture must be wooden. If it is not possible to buy a headset from an array, furniture made of chipboard and MDF should be a high-quality imitation of pure wood.

Walls

Most often, rustic-style walls do without wallpaper. Usually this is paint, not glossy, muted, which serves as a good background. White is more common, and this is understandable: it has always been associated with cleanliness, order, modesty. It's hard to get tired of him.

And in case of excessive soiling, the wall can always be tinted in the express repair mode. If you absolutely don't like white, take a look at the brown-beige color scheme. She is also very close to the stylistic solution and is always in harmony with wooden furniture. If you want a more active color in the interior, consider options for olive, sand, muted pistachio, blue with milk.

If you cannot refuse wallpaper, then choose options in retro style, with an unpretentious floral print. You can take ready-made samples with a slight wear effect. They will be a little faded, which is good in this case.

Floor

There are several options here. People who strictly follow stylistic canons make a strictly wooden floor. Painted or not - these are nuances, personal preferences. But those who are satisfied with the imitation of a rustic style, take parquet or laminate "wood imitation", perhaps with deliberate scuffs. Tiles are also acceptable in a rustic setting, but simple, without very complex modern patterns.

No futuristic or fancy geometry. Look what the tiles were like in the interiors of the 50s, 60s, and look for something similar. Linoleum is rarely put, but for a budget design, the option with a retro pattern will not be a sin. The main thing is to take high-quality options so that the material will serve for a long time and without complaints.

Ceiling

Usually the ceiling in a rustic interior is light. It is painted with paint, often the same as the walls. But its distinctive feature will be beams. Someone thinks that dark beams against a light ceiling background are convincing only in a large rural house. But even in a small kitchen in a high-rise building, this element can successfully fit into the overall design.

You can make a color call. For example, the beams will be painted to match the kitchen counter or wall-mounted open shelf. They can also color-match the window frame and window sill (if you have a brown version rather than white plastic or wood).

A chandelier doesn't have to be too sophisticated and modern. Choose a simple standard that is difficult to relate to a style or era, or look for fixtures that imitate a rural style. These are also found.

Furniture selection

Furniture should be solid and a little rough. Carved details, if present, are minimal. There can be no gilding and other "non-rustic" decoration. The main requirement for a kitchen set is a sturdy, reliable, heavy set. It is great if it is made of natural wood. Both linear and angular options are appropriate if there is no possibility to build the headset along one wall.

The dining group is also preferred from natural wood. Forged metal legs are possible, but not chrome plated. The glass top will definitely not fit into the interior, the solid wood will be authentic. Yes, rustic furniture that looks bulky, durable, made to last is welcome. But such heavy structures in the realities of a small kitchen look ridiculous. Therefore, keep balance.

Organization of lighting

Modern plastic windows, if we are talking about natural light, are certainly a foreign element to the rustic style. And not only decorative charm distinguishes windows with wooden frames - it is also safe.

By the way, environmental friendliness is something that must be in a rustic style.... For the window, remove the blinds and hang cotton or linen curtains. Necessarily light, with a floral print or in a cage, stripes. The main thing is that they do not become a harsh obstacle to the sun's rays. A country kitchen has a long day, it should have a lot of light and sun.

Central lighting is a chandelier or lamp with a beautiful shade. It can hang low over the dining round table, which is definitely very atmospheric. But local lighting in the work area is likely to be needed as well. If the kitchen is very small, you can do without it (provided that the "general" light is bright and powerful). Also, don't forget to keep a set of candles and a vintage-style candlestick on the shelf of your kitchen unit. It can also be scented candles.

You can create the same hygge in the village kitchen. Cooking by candlelight is not very convenient, but talking, having dinner, dreaming, listening to music while charlotte is baked in the oven is especially pleasant.

Curtains and other textiles

In some cases, the window can do without curtains at all, in darkened rooms on high floors it is very convenient. But whatever one may say, curtains greatly influence the creation of coziness in the room. Basic requirement for curtains:

  • only from natural materials (linen, cotton, chintz);
  • in color and print, they should overlap with something else present in the kitchen, for example, with a tablecloth on the table, with upholstered chairs or with towels (optional);
  • short curtains are preferable, they may not even reach the windowsill;
  • curtains can be changed seasonally: in summer - with bright colors and a sunny mood, in autumn - with chestnuts and maple leaves, in winter - in frosty colors and with snowflakes, and in spring - with delicate lilies of the valley or lilacs.

Do you need tulle - yes, only light, uncomplicated, transparent. Decorate the windowsill with flowers in pots, beautiful ceramics or year-round greenery planted in a long wooden box.

Decor elements

They make the interior "its own face": without decor it would be impersonal, unfinished... It would be great if most of the decorative elements were made by hand. The decoration of the wall above the dining table can involve paintings of dried flowers under glass (ideal for family art), macrame, and open laconic shelves that will house lovely trinkets.

Do not forget to arrange the table - a tablecloth, napkins or a compromise option, even the track, if possible, should be hand-made. The walkway is especially convenient - it can be quickly removed if necessary, and at the same time it looks smart and fun.

In a rustic aesthetic, flaunting kitchen utensils (especially antique ones). Instead of flower vases, he can use old-style enamel teapots and cans. And flowers in the kitchen, of course, should be as often as possible. A bouquet of wheat ears, cornflowers and chamomile looks especially beautiful - summer itself, nature itself and its perfection.

Successful examples

Examples can inspire, give an idea, become a stimulus to action. And even if the kitchens are impressive in size in the photo, take the details, grab the nuances and transfer them to your home. Four great examples of inspiration:

  • a kitchen with log walls and a vintage set - nothing is expensive here, but it will always be beautiful;
  • a simple white and brown version - modest conditions did not prevent you from creating a cozy corner, reminiscent of your native village;
  • very nice kitchen with unusual walls and deliberate negligence - but there is something real, touching in this;
  • a small but cozy kitchenette is a good option for those who are desperate to do something pretty on a more than modest area.

Create your own, not forgetting that if you "marry" good taste and personality, you get the interior of your dreams!
