Cupboards in the kitchen: types, selection and placement
It is almost impossible to imagine any kitchen without a storage cabinet. The choice of this piece of furniture depends on many important parameters - from the size of the room itself to the system for organizing the storage of utensils.
Types of structures
Kitchen cupboards are usually divided into three main groups. This piece of furniture can be floor-standing, wall-mounted or corner. The structures have different functionality and are suitable for different rooms, and therefore their choice should be deliberate and due to many factors. The base cabinet is available in many variations. The most common are ordinary pedestals, but the same group includes a display cabinet, and a pencil case.
Floor structures are placed either on several legs or on a solid plinth. This type of cabinet is usually suitable for storing more crockery. In addition, they perfectly serve as a surface for cooking and other work. Since the floor structure is more stable and able to withstand serious loads, it is reasonable to place heavy utensils in it - that is, pans, pots, deep plates and similar items.
A wall-mounted kitchen cabinet has less storage space than a floor-standing one, but, being fixed to the wall surface, it saves a significant part of the floor space.... Not a single small kitchen can do without hanging structures, in which you need to accommodate a lot of things for storage.
It is not allowed to place heavy dishes in them, but mugs, glasses, light plates and saucers will fit perfectly on the shelves.
Corner kitchen cabinets allow you to make smart use of the inconvenient area. The non-standard length of this module allows you to place a large number of storage items, but it happens that it is inconvenient to use. The corner cabinet can be wall-mounted, floor-standing, as well as an individual column. These structures are also usually subdivided into trapezoidal, L-shaped, and also docking.
It is worth mentioning that sometimes in large kitchens there is also a built-in cupboard for washing dishes. As a rule, it occupies an already existing niche, or a partition, and is a structure similar to the common wardrobe.
Manufacturing materials
It is customary to use various materials for the manufacture of cupboards. Low-cost designs are made from Particleboard or MDFas well as inexpensive types of wood. More expensive options are already being created from wood. In the design of modern kitchens, we choose metal - such designs are reliable, durable and unusual in appearance. In most cases wooden modules are complemented by glass, and sometimes the cabinet is even made entirely of glass.
However, wood is still the most popular material. It has the necessary strength, is environmentally friendly for the inhabitants of the apartment, and also looks always attractive. The material is additionally treated with a protective solution against moisture and insect exposure, and therefore you should not be afraid of these problems.
Dimensions (edit)
Modern kitchen cabinets are made in various shapes and sizes, and therefore it is not particularly difficult to choose the most suitable design for a particular interior. For spacious rooms, it is recommended to choose large and solid-looking models, and for small rooms, a tall, narrow and compact module is more suitable. Besides, the parameters will also depend on how many dishes are to be placed.
The height of a standard cabinet ranges from 30 to 90 centimeters in height, and the depth is usually 30 centimeters. but it is much more correct to select the dimensions for a specific room, that is, make it to order, taking into account all the features of the room.
The optimal width and height of the wall cabinet should be between 30 and 35 centimeters for ease of use. It is important to provide a secure attachment system so that it simply does not fall off. An overly high pans module is not particularly practical, as there will be problems using the utensils located on the upper shelves.
In the event that a dish dryer will be placed in the cabinet, the depth of the module should be equal to the diameter of the largest plate. In general, the best solution for the kitchen is to use cabinets of different heights, both with open shelves and with blank doors.
Internal filling
Although it is easiest and quickest to place all the available dishes on the shelves, the presence of a large number of modern storage systems makes it possible to solve the task much more efficiently and aesthetically. It is nevertheless customary to store the plates on the shelves, but instead of the usual ones, it makes sense to purchase special lattice plates that allow you to install items "on the edge".
A good solution would be to place immediately in the module a dryer, which is a metal system, under which a tray is installed, where water flows. In the floor drawers, special dividers are often used, which prevent the dishes from hitting the walls and among themselves.
While glasses and glasses are simply placed on shelves, cups are much more convenient to place on a railing - a special tube with hooks or other holders that is hung from the outside or inside the cabinet.Sometimes the hooks are simply fixed on the top surface of the cabinet, and circles are suspended from them by the "ears". In the floor boxes for storing this type of tableware, dividers are again used.
It is convenient to store pots in floor cabinets, but in the case of a corner module, you will have to additionally purchase a pull-out system or a rotating "carousel" with swivel shelves.
Frying pans will be conveniently located on rails or in drawers with delimiters. In addition, the retractable hook system. The covers can be fixed from the inside on the doors or in special drawers. Many companies have also started to create special stands that are placed inside the floor module and are often retractable. Will come to the rescue and various rail systemsthat look like mesh baskets, tubes or hooks.
How to choose?
To choose a good kitchen cupboard for dishes, you need to consider the following nuances:
- the number of items planned for storage;
- the size and shape of the space itself;
- kitchen design style.
For example, any retro design involves the installation of tall showcases with glass doors. The same showcase, made of metal, will successfully fit into the high-tech style. Designing a kitchen in such a modern style as Scandinavian means abandoning wall cabinets and combining floor cabinets with open shelves.
In any case, the chosen wardrobe should be comfortable, roomy and appropriate to the general stylistic solution of the room.
Where is it better to place?
A freestanding cabinet is most conveniently placed in a wall niche or any similar recess. If this is not possible, then you should put it in a free corner in order to use the free space wisely. In other cases, the installation of cabinets should be carried out in such a way as so as not to interfere with movement around the room, as well as the use of all household appliances. Wall cabinets should be positioned so that 50 to 56 centimeters are kept between them and the worktop.
The specific height is determined depending on the height of all family members, and most importantly, the person who will use them most often. The deeper the base cabinet is, the smaller the gap between the countertop and the wall unit should be.
In order to guess both the stylistic solution and the placement, it is most convenient to immediately purchase a one-piece headset that combines the upper and lower modules. The floor module can have a different number of doors and drawers, the same can be said about the hinged ones, so this "volumetric" factor will also have to be taken into account when placing objects in space.
Proper furniture care
The kitchen itself is a very complicated room. Furniture is periodically exposed to moisture of different temperatures, heavy vapors, splashes of grease and food particles. This suggests that, on the one hand, it is necessary to acquire stable pieces of furniture, and, on the other hand, to properly care for them.
- You should not cut food directly on the surface without using a special board, jerk drawers sharply, or slam doors. Modules must be regularly processed using detergents.
- It is important that the cabinet is protected from direct sunlight, and the processing is carried out only with the use of solutions that do not have aggressive components in the composition.
- It is customary to wipe wood with a dry and soft cloth, and ordinary wet wipes are also suitable for plastic panels. If the wooden cabinet turns out to be very stained, then it makes sense to dilute the degreasing agent in water, then rinse the surface with a wet cloth and be sure to dry everything thoroughly. The stainless steel can be easily washed with soapy water and must be wiped off as well.Perhaps only glass is a kind of exception - such facades can only be washed with the appropriate means. Wooden panels, including MDF with chipboard, are recommended to be additionally treated with polish in combination with wax.
- When arranging furniture on shelves, it is important not to overload them and place heavier dishes underneath. The same applies to drawers, the driving elements of which quickly fail in the event of improper use. Of course, it is necessary to minimize the mechanical impact, as well as the impact of steam and water. Therefore, for example, it is not customary to place cupboards directly above the stove. It also makes sense to additionally strengthen the drawers with shock absorbers and door closers.
Backlighting in the kitchen will also not be superfluous. Unstable floors require cookware units with adjustable feet. Otherwise, both shelves and boxes will lose the required reliability and strength.
