Chairs are one of the must-have furniture accessories in the kitchen, their range is very wide and represented by models made of various materials and having various shapes. The most popular are chairs with a back.

Advantages and disadvantages

Chairs with a backrest are traditionally used in the kitchen. This is due to the following advantages:

  • they have a comfortable design, since the backrest, being a support for the human spine, thereby facilitates the load on the back of the person sitting;
  • they have good stability;
  • the back is, among other things, a design element that adorns the appearance of the product;
  • a wide variety of models allows you to choose the best option for a particular kitchen, for example, folding chairs are convenient in small kitchens, since, if necessary, they can be folded and removed, freeing up useful space.

But along with the advantages, there are also disadvantages. This is, first of all, their somewhat large dimensions, requiring a lot of space. Therefore, it is inconvenient to use such chairs in small kitchens, since they occupy a lot of usable space and create cramped space. And they also restrict the movements of the person sitting on them.

Shapes and sizes

The furniture market is characterized by a wide variety of models of chairs for the kitchen, which differ in shape and size. However, there are standard requirements for their sizes. First of all, the height of the chairs in the kitchen should match the height of the table. The comfort of a seated person directly depends on this. For a standard table with a height of 72–78 cm, the dimensions of the chair can be as follows:

  • the height of the chair from the floor surface to the upper edge of the back should be in the range from 80 to 90 cm, from the floor to the seat - from 40 to 45 cm;
  • the height of the backrest should correspond to approximately 45 cm;
  • the width of the seat and backrest must be at least 35 cm, the depth must be from 50 to 55 cm.

However, it should be noted that the width of the seat as well as the height of the backrest may vary slightly. Chairs can be either high or low back. High and low back models look great in classic kitchens. The back can be carved, upholstered or with ordinary wooden beams. Chairs with simple and smooth backs, both high and low, emphasize the laconicism of modern styles.

Chairs with a low back and armrests look harmoniously in a modern and retro kitchen in the 60s, where minimalism is present.

The shape of the back and seat is also different: rectangular and square, oval and round. Sometimes there are chairs with a back and a seat in the shape of a trapezoid. Chairs with oval and round backs are very beautiful. Smooth outlines, replacing straight lines, emphasize the aristocracy of the product. Classic chairs with these shapes are usually complemented by graceful thin legs and armrests with flowing outlines. These chairs create an atmosphere of grandeur, sophistication and are appropriate in a classic kitchen.

Important! By their constructive form, such types of kitchen chairs with a back are distinguished, such as: classic monolithic, folding, stackable (installed in a column).

Materials (edit)

Chairs are made from a variety of materials. It can be wood, plastic, metal, vine and other natural materials. In addition, there are combined models in which metal, plastic or wood can be combined in different versions. Let's take a closer look at the most popular materials.

Wood

Wooden models are characterized by a unique design and versatility in the interior. These chairs go well with other wooden pieces of furniture: cupboards, a table, and a wooden kitchen set. They can be used in the kitchen with any style design - from classic to hi-tech and loft. Wooden chairs are beautifully combined with decorative elements made of glass, metal, natural stone.

They are distinguished by environmental safety, structural reliability, durability, long service life and ease of maintenance.

These chairs are of high quality only if they are made from solid wood. But often natural wood is replaced by chipboard. Such models do not have the required environmental friendliness and durability. Chairs are made from such tree species as beech and oak (they have the highest strength), birch, but it has less strength.

These models can be performed in a combined version: the base is metal, the seat and back are soft, and the legs are wooden. For soft upholstery, eco-leather, various dense fabrics, natural leather are often used. In the kitchen, it is better to use models with upholstery and a seat made of genuine leather, which has a long service life, high wear resistance and retains its appearance for a long time. The fabric upholstery in the kitchen gets dirty quickly. Foam rubber, special (calendered) felt, spunbond and synthetic winterizer are used as filler for seats.

Plastic

Plastic products are distinguished by a variety of shapes and colors. Plastic refers to materials that can be easily processed; light, comfortable and very practical chairs are made from it. Therefore, they are very popular with consumers. Plastic models also have the following advantages:

  • they have a low price;
  • have a reliable design;
  • are not exposed to the harmful effects of moisture;
  • with a low weight, they have sufficient strength and can withstand a weight of up to 90 kg;
  • do not require complex maintenance.

The disadvantages of these models are the following:

  • easily undergo various mechanical damages - scratches and even cracks are formed;
  • do not tolerate temperature changes and can deform;
  • fade under the influence of bright sunlight;
  • some limitations in style use: compatible with the style of backlash and minimalism, not at all in harmony with the classic style.

Plastic models are distinguished by a wide color palette - from restrained classic tones to original bright colors. They add color and freshness to the interior of the kitchen. Models with rectangular backs will emphasize the restraint of design, round and oval ones will soften the space. The material for the seat and back is usually polyvinyl chloride, and for the legs - metal or wood, but there are also completely plastic models. Plastic chairs look good in a kitchen with a lot of shiny surfaces. Models made of transparent plastic are perfect for a small kitchen area: they visually increase the free area.

Metal

Metal chairs are durable and easy to use. Metal products are a practical, convenient and inexpensive option for the kitchen. They can support a weight of up to 150 kg, have a long service life and are easy to clean. They have such advantages as:

  • resistant to moisture and temperature extremes, well tolerated by cleaning agents;
  • have a long service life - they do not lose their appearance and do not deform for many years;
  • have a high wear resistance - over time, a creak does not appear, they are not able to dry out and loosen.

Their main drawback is considered to be some limited style use: the best option is a minimalist kitchen, but it is not recommended to use it in a classic style kitchen or Provence. Another disadvantage is that over time, the metal legs leave indentation marks on the linoleum. The raw materials for the manufacture of these products are aluminum and chrome-plated steel, metal coated with powder dyes of different shades or with galvanized coating. These materials are highly durable and can withstand heavy weight loads.

The seats can be as follows:

  • soft, made of natural or artificial filler, covered with leather (natural or artificial) or dense fabric;
  • rigid, made of wood, plastic, chipboard, metal.

The backrest is either metal or made of a material similar to that of the seat. In some models, it is possible to adjust the height of the backrest and the angle of its inclination. Combination models can include combinations such as metal and wood, glass and metal, plastic and metal. An expensive and elite option are metal forged chairs, which are distinguished by their original unique decor and uniqueness. They look luxurious in a Provence style kitchen.

Metal chairs with a soft back and upholstery made of artificial leather or dense fabric look great in a high-tech kitchen, loft and beautifully harmonize with decorative elements made of glass and natural stone.

Wicker chairs

The raw material for such products is natural material: vine and willow, bamboo and rattan, cattail and reeds. These models have a unique and extraordinary decor and are quite appropriate in the kitchen in Provence and country styles. Their advantages are as follows:

  • high degree of environmental friendliness;
  • light weight;
  • aesthetic decorative appearance, uniqueness and originality, as they are made by hand.

The disadvantages are as follows:

  • high cost of products;
  • exposed to moisture and direct sunlight;
  • require complex care;
  • low level of strength.

By the type of construction, wicker models are frameless (the role of the frame is played by thick and strong stems) and frame, in which the frame is made of metal, wood and braided with any natural material.

Design and color

The design and color scheme of chairs for the kitchen also differs in variety. The various décor is designed to harmonize the chairs well with the interior. Wooden models are often lacquered or painted. White varnish is especially popular. These products are great for the kitchen and go with any style. Wood carvings are often used for decoration.

The back can be designed with a regular shape, with a distinct contour, or an oval, round or even curved configuration. Models with curved legs and an oval soft back have a beautiful and sophisticated appearance. Models with a round back are often decorated with floral or curly designs. Backrests are often made in the form of an intricate composition with intertwining elements. Chairs with oval or round soft backs with a frame and soft upholstery, contrasting in color, for example, a frame in bright red, and the upholstery in a milky or lemon-green hue, look spectacular. Often, chairs are complemented by armrests of various shapes: rounded, twisted or rectangular.

Important! The color scheme of chairs should not introduce dissonance into the interior, but should be in harmony with the color scheme of the kitchen, combined with the table and other pieces of furniture and decor. Usually bright colors are not recommended for bright designs, and black chairs are inappropriate in black interiors.

How to choose?

One of the main criteria for choosing kitchen chairs is their comfort and size. With a properly sized chair, the sitting person's legs touch the floor, the knees are bent at an angle of 90 degrees, and the front edge of the seat should not rest against the popliteal region. You should also take into account such nuances as:

  • more comfortable for the back are chairs with high backs, which have an inclination of no more than 5 degrees;
  • if the height of family members is too different, then you can choose models in which the height of the backrest and the position of the seat are adjusted;
  • the weight of the chairs also matters - if you intend to carry them, then it is better to purchase lightweight structures made of aluminum or plastic;
  • plastic and metal models do not require complex maintenance, it is enough to wipe them periodically;
  • textile upholstery of products is less durable and will last less;
  • for kitchens with limited free space, foldable or stackable models are better suited.

An important point is the combination of chairs with a table. Any wooden model is suitable for a classic wooden table. For tables of modern design (made of plastic, glass and other materials), chairs with a metal frame will be the best option; combined options are also allowed.

Successful examples in the interior

Classic wooden models are appropriate for any style.

Comfortable models with soft upholstery and curved legs emphasize the cozy atmosphere of a Provence style kitchen.

Plastic chairs look great in a minimalist kitchen. They emphasize the rationalism and rigor of the interior.
