Features and selection of rusks
Table setting is an important and creative process. The impression of the guests from the feast depends on how the table is set and what items are proposed to use. When choosing accessories, you should pay attention not only to individual dishes, main dishes, but also to secondary items. For example, a variety of vases and biscuits should be selected harmonious and roomy.
Appointment
Sugar dishes have long been known among the general population. Initially, they were made in order to serve bread croutons on the table. Hence they got their name. Later, biscuits, sweets, and bread were put into rusks. Now they are sometimes even mistakenly called bread bins. But both names show well that most often crackers appear on the table at lunchtime, since their contents are added to soups.
Varieties and selection
Sugar bowls can be of several types.
Wooden
In rural areas, most of the dishes were made of wood, so these biscuits can be considered the most authentic. Traditionally, they are made from linden, which itself has a pleasant shade and antibacterial properties, that is safe to interact with food.
In addition, wooden crackers can be painted, carved and varnished, and decorated with fabric. Wood gives a lot of room for creativity.
Wicker
If wooden and any other options are difficult to make on your own, then wicker dishes are particularly accessible. Usually crackers are woven from vines or birch bark. Birch bark is the bark of a birch that is cut into strips and dried. And the vine is the peeled willow twigs.
They make beautiful rusk baskets, however, they are comparatively short-lived. Like any plant material, birch bark and vines wear out over time, and the structure itself can begin to fall apart. But they have one more plus - it is the ability to easily and at any time to make a handle-rim.
Metallic
In contrast to wicker, metal products are always a guarantee of long service life. However, here it is imperative to pay attention to which metal is chosen as the material. Most desirable, of course, silver rusks, since this metal not only looks beautiful on the table, but also has strong antibacterial properties. Sometimes they are made with a rim handle or a lid, which adds to the convenience of use.
Back in the 19th century, the production of metal rusks, stylized as wicker ones, began, they are still popular today.
For such models, silver is best suited, and as a budget option, you can choose aluminum. In addition to these metals, stainless steel, enamelled steel and titanium are also used for cookware, but they are rarely used for rusks.
Porcelain and faience
We owe one more type of rusks to the 19th century. Porcelain was very popular among high society due to its white color and surface, which allowed the application of any pattern and colored glaze. Such patterns were usually repeated on dishes included in one set. It was considered bad form to arrange different sets, therefore, dinner sets also included rusks.
For less affluent houses, earthenware sets were made. Outwardly, they were almost indistinguishable from porcelain, so they became quite a worthy replacement for them. Thus, earthenware rusks began to appear. Both are now available in crockery stores.
Plastic
With the advent of cheap plastic, dishes made from this material have become an integral part of our life. She, in turn, is also quite cheap, and at the same time not as fragile as porcelain, faience, wicker or even wooden. In terms of its qualities, plastic is inferior only to metals and especially to their hard alloys, however, in terms of weight it is much lighter.
When choosing a rusks, you should pay attention to marking and type of plastic - it must belong to food categories, otherwise such a thing cannot be used even for temporary storage of food. There are also food grade silicone rusks. They are flexible and viscous.
However, do not abuse this, otherwise you can ruin the product - any plastic model can crack from a sharp physical impact.
