Making a bread bin with your own hands

The main advantage of a home-made wooden bread bin is the long-term storage of bread in it, which remains fresh and soft. But it is also an original decorative household item that can become an interior decoration. Such utensils, of course, can be purchased, but if you have basic knowledge from the field of carpentry, you can create a truly unique thing.

Before you get down to work, you should think about what shape and size the thing will be, what material it will be made of. Before, because families were large, craftsmen created large boxes for storing bread, but today smaller dimensions are required.

Accepted product shapes:

• rectangular, square container with doors;
• box with a lid;
• an open dish with a fully opening lid, while the base can be used as a cutting board.

You can decorate an item by applying a pattern with coloring compositions, decoupage technique, by burning and carving, after which the outer side of the product is covered with a protective layer of special food varnish or stain.

As for materials, it can be wood, plywood, birch bark, bamboo. Craftsmen create their masterpieces even from cardboard, cotton fabric, clay, newspapers, and plastic bottles. The most widespread are bread bins made of wood and birch bark; small wicker boxes made of vine are also popular.

Having stopped your choice on one of the types of products, it is necessary to draw a diagram based on the dimensions and the preliminary drawing... In this case, it is necessary to build on the amount of bread and the size of the loaves (loaves) that will fit in the bread bin. It is important that the contents fit freely inside. It is allowed to create drawings directly on wood or other material.

A homemade breadbox is often made from plywood, bamboo, birch bark and natural wood. This is due to their advantageous characteristics, such as air permeability and moisture regulation within the structure.

For work, you will need a clamping carpentry ruler, clamps, a jigsaw, a hand-held milling machine, emery.

• At the first stage, it is necessary to cut out all the details in accordance with the drawing, best of all, with a jigsaw. The following blanks should be available - bottom, two sidewalls, top, rear wall, doors.
• Next, you need to fasten all the elements with screws, self-tapping screws, glue or by means of a "groove-comb" connection, having previously formed grooves and spikes on the plywood parts.
• Joints for reliability are processed with wood glue.
• If a shutter door is conceived, it is made of rails, at the end, an additional groove is made inside the bread bin to move it.
• The hinged door is mounted on the front side of the product.
• After that, you need to carefully grind the item. The patterned look of the kitchen attribute can be decorated with lace carvings or painted with paint.

A wooden bread box is made in a similar way, only boards or parts of a wooden sheet are used as material, according to which, according to the sawing scheme, parts are cut out. This design can be distinguished by a hinged lid, the presence of an internal shelf or division into sections.

An original thing can be created from bamboo rugs, and if small dimensions are needed, from napkins, moreover, the work will take only a few hours.

For manufacturing, you need to prepare cardboard, scissors, self-adhesive tape, a piece of cloth, a pencil to create a sketch, you also need a beautiful souvenir handle for the curtain door. The size will depend on the parameters of the napkin.

• First, a body is made from a thick sheet of cardboard.
• To make the door close tightly, the side walls are rounded off on one side.
• All elements are connected with glue.
• From the inside and outside, the cardboard is pasted over with a self-adhesive film, which gives it strength.

The final stage is bamboo finishing. If the napkin is large, it will be enough for the bottom and door.

A product is created from the top layer of linden or birch bark, but you can also craft from ready-made material sold in creative stores.

The order of work.

• You will need 24 birch bark ribbons, which are laid horizontally and vertically (12 pieces each 20 mm wide). A rug is woven from them, which will be the deepest part of the box.
• The lid should be weaved so that its height is one and a half diagonals of strips, which are 0.5 mm wider than those used for the base.
• The edges of the product are fixed with a stainless steel wire.

An interesting option is to create a bread box from a plastic bottle and paper. A container with a volume of 5 liters is suitable as a basis.

Manufacturing steps:

• the bottle is cut into two identical parts along the neck, and the sides are cut from the bottom;
• take newspapers or waste paper and tear it into small pieces;
• then you need to coat the plastic with petroleum jelly, and put the prepared paper parts on top;
• PVA glue is applied to the first newspaper layer, and paper is again applied to it, it is best to make 5-6 layers, after which the mold is left for final drying, it usually takes several days;
• as a result, the hardened form is removed from the plastic base;
• you can use a deep saucer to create a stand and follow the same procedure as for the parts of the bottle.

All elements of the future bread bin are fastened together with adhesive tape, and the stand is glued with hot melt glue. It remains to glue the structure with ordinary napkins, and then paint it with acrylic paint. However, you can choose the decor you like.

You can also make an open bread bin with your own hands from cotton and even a finished knitted fabric, which is soaked in starch water before production. The main task is to create a dense inner cardboard base that will serve as a frame for the soft material.

• To do this, you need to take a square sheet of cardboard with sides of 27 cm and cotton fabric 1.5 cm larger. You will also need a ruler, a piece of chalk for marking, tape, pins, duct tape, and an iron.
• Two cuts of fabric are sewn on three sides, then the resulting bag must be turned outward with its front surface and cardboard is inserted into it, and then completely stitched.
• Inside it, a square is drawn with chalk, stitched, and, connecting the corners with pins, they get a semblance of a dish. You can put a beautiful paper napkin inside, and decorate the sides with ribbon bows.

Some craftsmen are able to create kitchen utensils even from plain paper by folding the sheets into tight tubes, which are then connected with glue and intertwined. From such blanks, fancy bread bins are obtained, which are first coated on top with a primer mixture, and then with paint. And they are no less valuable than crafts completely hollowed out from a single piece of wood.

A handmade product, no matter how complex it may be, if made with a soul, will always delight with its original look and inspire the craftsman for further creativity.
