In the cold season, outerwear often gets dirty and looks untidy. After rain or snow, spots appear on the jackets, which are not so easy to remove. I don’t want to walk the rest of the season in a soiled jacket, there is only one way out - to wash it at home.

How to properly wash a jacket in an automatic machine, which jacket can be washed in a machine, and which is not worth it? You will find answers to these and many other questions in our material.

Which jacket can be washed in the washing machine?

In autumn and winter, we wear beautiful and warm jackets with fur, made of raincoat fabric, or, for example, with climate control, which need to be washed thoroughly by the spring. Of course, products made of water-repellent fabric do not get dirty so quickly. But unfortunately, after walking in bad weather and completely drying out from rain or snow, many products acquire stains, which are not so easy to remove. There is only one way out - to wash your jacket or parka.

You can, of course, wash a puffy winter, bologna or autumn waterproof jacket at home, for example, in a washing machine.

But it is important to remember which products with what kind of filler can be washed, and with which not:

  • Product from holofiber easy to wash in the most common washing machine. At the same time, it is important to remember that you need to take into account all the features of the jacket and carefully study all the labels so that there is no mistake regarding the washing mode and water temperature.
  • Raincoat jackets also easy to wash at home.
  • Bologna or nylon skilful housewives cleverly wash the jacket in an automatic machine and they are not as capricious as other types of outerwear.
  • Remember that jackets or parkas with leather inserts, it is better not to wash in a typewriter with metal inserts, but to take them to a dry cleaner, where professionals will cope with the problem quickly and efficiently.
  • In addition, it is important to remember that winter or autumn outerwear products that have one or another filler, cannot be pre-soaked in powder... This is usually done by many who are afraid that the stains on the jacket will remain after the machine wash.

It is better to properly prepare the thing for washing and then you can easily get rid of dirt.

Preparing and removing stains

Before sending the product straight to the drum of the washing machine, you need to properly prepare it for the washing process, otherwise you can ruin the thing:

  • As mentioned above, before starting to wash, you should carefully study the jacket label, which contains all the important information.
  • The sleeves of the jacket and the collar are most likely to get dirty. As a rule, it is these greasy areas of clothing that are difficult to wash, and it is not so easy to remove stains, especially from a black jacket. Most often, ordinary dishwashing detergent saves from grease. Dab a little on a clean sponge, scrub the stains, and you will see them come off quickly.
  • Glossy collars or jacket sleeves can be washed with regular soap, preferably with household soap. You can just thoroughly lather the salted areas, rub it a little and send it straight to the drum of the washing machine without rinsing it off. If you have a special soap on your farm, which, as the manufacturers assure, easily copes with various stains, then you can use it. The main thing is to remember that such stains on winter clothes should not be removed with bleach. The stain may go away, but the jacket can strongly change its color and become covered with white or light spots.
  • Detachable collars, especially those made from natural or even artificial fur, are best removed before washing. The same applies to the hood: if it is made with fur trim, then it is better to remove it. All buttons, locks, buttons must be fastened before washing and only then send the product to the drum of the machine.
  • In addition, nBe sure to check your pockets and lay out all the contents. And also check the product for integrity. After all, small holes, diverging seams, buttons, which are held on the "word of honor" can finally break during the washing process and damage the product. Therefore, all minor problems should be eliminated even before starting the washing process.

Choosing a program and temperature

If there are no specific recommendations on the product label on which wash mode to choose the best, then you can follow the general rules:

  • Be sure to choose a gentle wash cycle. Many modern automatic machines are equipped with special programs for washing down jackets, jackets and other outerwear. Of course, washing with such a program is much easier, since the manufacturers have already taken care of the quality of the wash, and the program operates in the optimal temperature mode.
  • If your washing machine does not have a special program, then feel free to choose the "Manual" or "Delicate" mode. At high temperatures, the filler of your favorite thing can deteriorate and you are unlikely to be able to restore it later. The temperature at which you will wash should not exceed 40 ° C, preferably 30 ° C.
  • As for the spin, then you cannot overdo it. Four hundred rpm will be enough. It is recommended to spin many products at a higher speed, for example, five hundred revolutions per minute. Remember that spinning too vigorously can damage the fabric itself, as well as the filling of the jacket. Therefore, the more delicate the spin, the better.
  • In addition, it is worth taking advantage of such additional functions as "Extra Rinse" or "Super Wash". These additional modes allow better detergent rinse out and reduce the risk of powder stains on jackets. If your automatic washing machine does not have such modes, then you can turn on rinsing separately again so that the jacket is exactly clean. Sometimes, after drying, stains from the detergent remain on the product: all this is due to insufficient rinsing.
  • And one more important point that should be taken into account when washing a jacket in a washing machine is detergent. Powders, especially powders with bleaching particles, are best avoided. Choose gel or liquid powder. It is better not to add bleach, especially when washing a black jacket.

Washing process

It is very difficult to wash a jacket in a modern automatic washing machine with a small drum, the capacity of which is less than five kilograms. As a rule, the thing is poorly cleaned. This nuance should be taken into account.

In addition, there are some more points, as they say, tricks that will help you properly wash your favorite clothes:

  • If your favorite jacket has a filler, for example, of down or feathers, then, due to ignorance of some secrets, you run the risk of ruining the product. Many people complain that after washing, the filler has gathered in lumps in various places of the jacket. To avoid this, you need to wash the thing with tennis balls... The balls will help whip the filler during washing and spinning in such a way that it does not lose its airiness and remains uniform throughout the jacket.
  • Products made of padding polyester, as a rule, do not deform during washing. But this does not mean at all that you can use a strong spin and a higher temperature regime. Try not to spoil the thing, adhere to the general recommendations that were indicated above.
  • A product such as a parka that is sewn, for example, using nylon, also needs a delicate wash. In order not to spoil or damage the thing, you should opt for the minimum spin level or completely abandon it.
  • After the item has been washed, it needs to be dried properly... Ideally, this can be done in a special tumble dryer that has a mode for drying jackets. But not everyone has such appliances at home, so you have to dry everything yourself.

Winter outerwear should be dried vertically, preferably on a hanger.

Remember that the hangers should be of normal size: no more, no less, otherwise the thing will deform during drying.

In addition, do not dry the item over a radiator or battery. It is best to do this outdoors, but not in the strong, scorching sun.

Alternative ways

If you are not the proud owner of an automatic machine or are simply afraid to wash your favorite jacket with this wonderful device of modern technology, then we have prepared tips for you that will help you to restore the cleanliness of your favorite thing by hand. Modern housewives know many ways that help to effectively clean the collar without washing or wipe off the greasy sleeves. In general, in other words, it is quite possible to wash your jacket at home.

The main thing is to know how to do it correctly:

  • Before starting your hand wash, remember that the process will be long, arduous and, of course, tedious. Start by filling a tub or large basin with water. The water should not be too hot. Dissolve the gel in it, or you can use liquid laundry detergent.
  • Immerse the product in water and leave it there for ten minutes. Then, using a regular sponge, start consistently rubbing it on the outside and then on the inside. Start with problem areas: collar, cuffs.
  • It is good if you first wash problematic and heavily soiled areas with laundry soap.
  • After you have thoroughly processed the entire surface of the jacket, you can proceed to rinsing. You will have to rinse several times, collecting clean water each time. This process is difficult, since the weight of the jacket, after being completely wet, increases significantly.
  • After rinsing, squeeze the jacket slightly so that some of the water is glass. Dry the product vertically on a hanger.
  • If your favorite jacket only needs to be cleaned at the collar and cuffs, you can use the usual and inexpensive method. Buy ammonia and hydrogen peroxide at the pharmacy, mix in equal proportions. Wet a cotton pad with the resulting liquid and carefully, without rubbing, wipe the contaminated area. Afterwards, wipe the treated surface with a dry cloth and leave to dry completely.

Useful Tips

And some more useful and effective tips to help keep your jacket clean. Someone is trying to wash their favorite clothes with shampoo, someone is trying to remove stains in the grandmother's way, someone knows how to wash so that the jacket shrinks, and we know exactly how and what to do so that it is always clean:

  • Wipe off greasy stains so that there are no streaks, you can use ordinary vinegar solution. In a glass of warm water, dilute one teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of sea salt. Once the salt has completely dissolved, you can soak a cotton pad in the liquid and carefully treat the stain. Stains after washing can also be easily removed using this method.
  • Another way to remove grease and sweat stains. Add a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of ammonia to a glass of water. Soak a cotton pad in the solution and treat the stain. This solution helps not only to get rid of dirt, but also to remove the yellow stain that sometimes appears after washing or improper drying.
  • Lovers of forest walks often face such a problem as tar stains on their outerwear. The most common gasoline will help to wipe off the resin. Only then should the jacket be thoroughly ventilated in the fresh air.
