New Year's quilling: original craft ideas
The quilling technique is one of the areas of applied art, which today enjoys constant interest. Quilling attracts with the ease of creating crafts and their openwork appearance, which is why it was used to the maximum when creating a New Year's decor.
Peculiarities
Quilling is widely popular for creating stylish Christmas tree decorations and cards; you can create Christmas trees and Christmas balls from rolled paper. The creation of decorative festive elements using the quilling technique involves the production of multi-colored blanks from paper - a thin strip is wound onto the base, then the tight spiral is slightly loosened and the resulting element is given the desired shape, and finally fixed with glue.
To create New Year's decorations, blanks are most often formed in the form of a drop or a half-bomb, the choice directly depends on the characteristics of the craft.
However, other techniques can be useful as well.
- "Eye". To do this, the round workpiece should be clamped on the sides.
- "Square"... In this case, you first need to form an "eye", then rotate the workpiece in the vertical direction and clamp the part again, but from the side.
- "Rhombus". Such a detail is easily obtained from a square shape if it is slightly flattened.
- "Triangle"... First you need to make a drop, then grab the corner and slightly flatten the base of the resulting triangle.
- "Arrow"... To obtain this shape, the workpiece in the form of a triangle is squeezed inward in the middle of the short side with one finger.
- "Crescent". Such a blank is made according to the same scheme as the "eye", only it is given a curved shape, for this the corners of the element are pinched with a slight shift, and not opposite each other.
Open configurations are popular for making New Year's cards.
- "Heart"... In this case, the strip of paper must be folded in the middle, and the free halves must be folded inward.
- "Horns". The strips are also folded in the middle, and both halves are twisted to the outside.
- "Twig"... In this embodiment, the paper is folded in a ratio of approximately 1 to 2, and at the end is rolled in the same direction.
Each of these techniques can be used to create stylish Christmas decorations.
Tools and materials
The popularity of quilling is explained by the fact that you do not need to purchase expensive equipment to create decorative elements, and all the necessary materials are sold in any store at a reasonable price. All that is required from the master is just stock up on colored paper and learn a simple twisting technique.
With the help of the simplest hand manipulations, at any time you can make stylish figures and patterns that resemble those that frost leaves on the glass windows.
To work in the quilling technique, you will need the following.
- Paper. You can cut the sheets into strips with scissors, or you can use special machines designed for cutting. Please note that when cutting ordinary paper, its edges give a white tint, so you need special quilling paper - it is sold in all needlework stores. If we are talking about creating snowflakes and other white decorations, then you can use the most ordinary printer paper.
- A pen. Used for winding, alternatively you can use a drinking straw, rod, toothpick, match or even a needle.
- Sample... It is a ruler with circles of different diameters cut out in it, it can be purchased in departments selling stationery.
- Tweezers... It is better to give preference to tweezers with pointed ends, they are designed in order to glue individual elements that are difficult to grasp with your fingers.
- And, of course, you need glue to work. For quilling, a glue stick or PVA is usually used, it must be transparent. Keep in mind that you need very little of it - otherwise, you may warp the paper.
Execution technique
In the quilling style, you can make many interesting New Year's crafts. These can be New Year's toys, balls, paintings, as well as wreaths, bells and many other decorations and compositions. We offer you the simplest schemes that are suitable for children and beginners.
"Snowflake"
To work you will need:
- strips of white or silver paper;
- scissors;
- matches;
- beads or rhinestones;
- threads.
The process of making a snowflake includes a few simple steps. First, you need to wind a strip of quilling paper on a match, for this purpose, using a scalpel or a sharp knife, slightly split its edge and clamp the paper in it. Then you need to carefully wind the strip on the base, do not do it too tightly, otherwise the part may come out ugly. To make a snowflake, 12 blanks are required, respectively, all actions should be performed 12 times.
After that, you can proceed directly to the formation of the snowflake. The round workpiece, gently squeezing and unclenching, is given the necessary slightly elongated shape - it is best to take the "eye" technique as a basis. After all the elements are ready, you should carefully fix them together, forming a snowflake.
Now all that remains is to fix beads, beads or other decorative elements around the perimeter of the entire product. A small loop is made from the thread and attached to one of the beams. Such a craft can be a worthy decoration for a New Year tree.
"Christmas tree"
To make a Christmas tree, you should prepare:
- a match, rod or toothpick;
- green paper;
- scrapbooking paper;
- beads;
- sparkles or glitter;
- printouts with words of congratulations;
- hole punch for decorating corners;
- tape.
Make frequent cuts on the prepared strip of paper, not reaching the edge of 1–2 mm. In order to speed up this process as much as possible, strips can be folded in 3 pieces and then cut. The strips prepared in this way are carefully wound onto the core and fixed with a glue stick. At the exit, you should have a pretty tight bud.
For one Christmas tree, 10 such twists are needed, so all actions should be repeated 10 times. All buds should be glued to plain paper and fluffed up with your fingers - you may notice that they seem to bloom. Treat the corners of the rectangles with an openwork hole punch for a decorative effect. Form a bow out of the ribbon, glue beads or rhinestones.
Small sheets of scrapbooking paper are cut into squares with a side of about 1 cm, using the trimming method, form a white snowdrift. To create a tree trunk, you can take a handle from a regular paper bag. After that, all that remains is to glue and collect all the blanks, as a result you will get a voluminous green tree.
The top of this beauty can be decorated with a gilded star. Do not forget about the decoration for the Christmas tree - fix the beads, they will act as Christmas balls, then apply sparkles and artificial snow.
Using the quilling technique, you can make many of the most original jewelry with your own hands. Each of them can be a good present for a friend or relative for the New Year.
