The White Labrador is a very beautiful variety of the breed, which was originally bred as a hunting dog, but in modern times has acquired the irreplaceable qualities of a companion dog. This is an incredibly cute, good-natured animal that needs communication with a person. The Labrador is often confused with the retriever, but despite belonging to the same group, these are completely different breeds.

Due to its amazing qualities, poise, quick-wittedness and unpretentiousness in care the Labrador is one of the most sought-after species.

Origin story

The breed was bred on the Canadian islands of Newfoundland in the 19th century. In order to get a hunting breed, they crossed a small Newfoundland, a setter, a Foxhound, a retriever. At first, the breed was black, for a long time it was standard for Labradors, but in the process of breeding retrievers, Labradors and other dogs, puppies of various colors, including white, were bred.

Dogs came to Russia only at the end of the 20th century and immediately gained incredible popularity. The standard parameters of the breed were recorded at the end of the 19th century, when the officially recognized color was black. At the very beginning of the 20th, the dog handlers made changes to the standard, adding chocolate and fawn suits to the number of possible ones.

The pure white Labrador is still not included in the standard, although it is identical in quality and character to its darker cousins.

Character traits

The Labrador Retriever is a very sociable breed, it needs a company. Therefore, it is suitable for a single person or a family who are ready to spend a lot of time with the dog. Labradors make excellent guides, tutors, psychotherapy dogs.They will brighten up the loneliness of the elderly, become great nannies for children, and be partners for a person leading an active lifestyle.

Leaving a small puppy alone is quite dangerous. Out of boredom, he will begin to gnaw and spoil things.

Having brought the puppy into the house, make sure that there are no wires or antennas in the access.

Among the best qualities of a white labrador retriever are:

  • well-developed mind, quick wit;
  • desire to be useful, to please the owner;
  • obedient, flexible, well trained;
  • optimistic, cheerful, playful;
  • friendly, peaceful, good-natured;
  • not prone to aggression, it is almost impossible to get angry;
  • gets along well with children and other animals, but you should not settle him in the same room with birds: they awaken the hunter's instincts in the dog.

Labradors get along well in large families, they become members of the family and treat all its members equally well. In addition, they are very dependent on the mood of the owner, so in no case should you take evil on them.

Despite the love of communication, these dogs are not annoying at all. They easily adapt to any rhythm and lifestyle of the family, tolerate anything from children - there is no need to be afraid that the dog will break on them. It doesn't take much effort to teach them the simplest commands.

They are human-oriented, so they easily make contact.

This breed has a number of minor disadvantages. They are very relative, but it is better to take into account "all sides of the coin" before starting a Labrador:

  • the kindness of the dog does not allow it to be a guard, it is too well-disposed towards everyone, even strangers;
  • too trusting;
  • loves water, it is difficult to keep it from running through puddles;
  • often rummages in garbage - weaning from this habit is required;
  • from boredom spoils, gnaws things, furniture;
  • snores.

Health

White dogs live from 10 to 14 years old with proper care. There are few genetic predispositions to diseases; in general, they have good immunity. Very often dogs are faced with the problem of obesity, which provokes the development of diseases, deteriorates the quality of the breed, and reduces life expectancy. Since dogs tend to overeat, it is important to keep track of the portions.

A lot also depends on the quality of food. Experts recommend making a choice in favor of dry food, as this will allow you to easily provide a balanced diet for your dog. If the choice is made in favor of natural products, it is imperative to include vitamin and mineral complexes in the diet, and also observe the proportions of nutrition. A kilogram of weight relies on 20 grams of meat, which makes up 50% of the total diet. In addition, the menu includes cereals, vegetables, dairy products, offal, herbs, fruits.

In no case should you feed Labradors with food from your table, give fatty meat, sweet, flour, salt, pepper, season food with spices.

Labradors are prone to the following diseases:

  • dysplasia of the joints;
  • osteochondrosis;
  • eye diseases;
  • hypothyroidism;
  • allergies;
  • ichthyosis;
  • parakeratosis of the nose.

In order for a Labrador to develop correctly, have good health and feel well, it is necessary:

  • timely vaccinate according to a general or individual schedule;
  • regularly carry out antiparasitic prophylaxis;
  • take many active walks every day, provide the dog with physical activity;
  • fully feed.

Maintenance and care

Despite the fact that the Labrador is a rather large dog, it can be safely kept not only in a private house, but also in an apartment. Before you bring your baby home, you need to provide him with everything he needs: bowl for food and water, toys, bed, collar, leash... The most important condition is daily walking, and walks should be active: the dog should be allowed to run freely. After all the vaccinations are affixed, the puppy is socialized, allowed to contact with other thoroughbred animals, he must see people, get used to them. Labradors love to swim; in the warm season, they can be taken out to water bodies so that they splash in plenty.

Caring for this breed is not too difficult, although the light shade of the coat is quite easily soiled and causes some inconvenience to the owners. On a walk, such dogs often get dirty, they have to be washed locally, to clean the coat of stains and dirt. The short-haired breed does not eliminate the need for brushing. It is better to teach the puppy to this from the first months of life, using a rubber brush. The Labradors are combed out 2-3 times a week, during the molting period - every day.

In addition to getting rid of hair, this procedure has other advantages: massage, improved blood circulation.

It is important to monitor the condition of your dog's eyes, ears and teeth. The eyes are washed with special solutions at least once a week; you need to examine them for inflammation or tearing daily. The ears are also checked regularly and cleaned as needed. Once every couple of weeks, the auricles gently remove excess sulfur using cotton swabs and hydrogen peroxide. Once a month, the dog needs to brush its teeth with a special paste and brush, and bones with fluoride are also periodically bought for the pet.

If you notice inflammation, pus, bleeding gums, or an unpleasant smell from the mouth - you need to show the animal to the veterinarian.

It is also necessary to trim the claws of the animal in time, this is done as necessary, since the claws can be grinded off naturally. This should be done using a special claw cutter.

How to choose a puppy?

Since the breed is very common in Russia, it will not be difficult to find a cattery or breeder with a good reputation. The main thing is to abandon the idea of buying a puppy from hands on the market. There you can buy either a sick dog, discarded, or another breed with an external resemblance. Buying a puppy is a very important step, you need to treat it very carefully and responsibly. When choosing, pay attention to the following points:

  • the best puppies are from working lines: such dogs have a healthy psyche, there are no genetic problems;
  • availability of documents (veterinary passport indicating all vaccinations, examinations), otherwise there is a risk of buying a puppy with dysplasia;
  • qualities and achievements of parents, their state of health;
  • you should not buy an animal in kennels where dogs are kept in open-air cages: they are very sociable, therefore such a lifestyle is destructive for the quality of the breed, causes deviations in the psyche;
  • the mother of puppies can bark a little, but rather quickly allows her to get closer to the puppies, if this does not happen, there is reason to doubt her psyche;
  • healthy puppies are active, curious, good contact, not afraid;
  • external examination should not reveal pus, redness, wounds, inflammation.

A good breeder himself asks a lot of questions and willingly answers yours, this shows his interest in the fate of the baby and that he has nothing to hide. They will always tell you about all the shortcomings. If you only hear laudatory odes and the breeder has no doubts whether you should give the dog away, then you should study the reviews about him again.
