Wine stains can easily ruin a thin tablecloth or your favorite outfit. However, red marks on the fabric are not a sentence, and it is not necessary to throw away your favorite jeans or an elegant dress decorated with wine blots. If you know several ways to deal with them, you can even get rid of old stains on your clothes.

What are the spots?

Red wine stains are considered difficult and persistent. The point here is in the chemical composition of this alcoholic drink. Due to the presence of such an element as anthocyanin in it, the liquid quickly stains the tissue, and after the pigment has penetrated the structure of the tissue, it is very difficult to get rid of such pollution. But, if you are still determined, then you can safely enter the fight for the cleanliness of your clothes. First of all, the choice of available tools depends on how old you have to remove the stain.

Fresh

If you can, it is of course best to work with a fresh stain. If you've just spilled wine on your clothes, the chances of completely cleaning the surface of the fabric are much higher. In case you spill a drink during some kind of feast, you can try to get rid of traces with some other alcohol. Try pouring them with warm vodka or white wine. And in that, and in the other drink, there is ethyl alcohol in the composition. It is he who helps to effectively remove traces of red.

By the way, white wine also contains organic acids, which also help fight this pollution.

There are several other remedies that also work well:

  1. Freshly squeezed lemon juice.A small amount of it should be applied to the fabric and after a few minutes wipe the stain with a dry cloth.
  2. Alternatively, you can sprinkle citric acid on the stain.
  3. If you have the opportunity to wash the soiled item immediately, you can use warm milk. Soak the fabric in it and hold it for about half an hour.

After this time, the item must be rinsed in clean water at room temperature.

Old stains

If you are working with dirt that has been "decorating" the surface of the fabric for a long time, then you need to use slightly different methods. For a long time, the color will bite into the fabric, so it is much more difficult to clean it, but still possible. Most effectively in this case work various chemical bleaches. Wine stains can be cleaned up using Domestos.

It is best to take not an ordinary product, but one that is designed specifically for washing linen or other delicate materials. This is especially true if you are planning to clean some kind of delicate and delicate fabric.

It is even easier to use ready-made fabric cleaning products than available ones:

  1. You just need to pour a little liquid on the speck and leave everything for a few minutes.
  2. When the product works, you need to gently rinse the item in cold water.
  3. As an alternative, many housewives recommend using pharmacy products, for example, sodium hydrogen sulfate. It needs to be applied to the contaminated area for a couple of minutes, and then also poured on top with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. This will discolor the material.
  4. The last stage of cleaning is the use of acetic acid, but here it is worth considering that acetic acid must be very well diluted with running water.

Necessary accessories and tools

As you can see, many products, both chemical and improvised, can be used to cleanse the fabric of red wine. An effective way to clean fabric is to use a store-bought stain remover. They work quite well, so you can safely use such a tool.

This works on both colored fabric and white. But you always need to make sure that the chemical is completely suitable for you.

First of all, check the label to see if the product matches your fabric type. If not, then the product may well not only fail to remove the stain, but also damage the fabric itself. Also, always pay attention to temperature and other tips on how to wash the material and how much to keep the chemical on its surface. If you do not want to take risks and use stain removers, or you simply don’t have them at your fingertips when you urgently need to remove a trace of wine, then pay attention to household items that will replace your chemistry. They need to be selected individually, focusing on the material.

For fresh stains, emergency helpers are suitable:

  1. Finely ground salt or fresh lemon juice. Salt is a good remedy that will save you if you are dealing with delicate fabrics that cannot be treated with chemicals or pharmaceuticals.
  2. Many women also recommend using simple laundry soap to clean fabrics from wine stains, which was previously used to solve almost all household problems. If you thoroughly soap the fabric and soak it for a couple of minutes, you can forget about the dirt after the first wash.

Features of cleaning materials

If you choose the right product and method for cleaning your fabric, you will be much more likely to successfully remove the stain.

Textile

The thinner and more elegant the material, the more carefully you need to work with it:

  • If you mess up cotton thingsweater, T-shirt or new tablecloth, it can be cleaned with warm milk. Heat it up, but don't let it boil. If the stain is small, then it should be carefully soaked in warm milk, using a napkin, for example. Then the thing should be left alone for a few minutes, and when the milk works, wash it.
  • Wool and silk, despite the external differences, in fact, they are exactly the materials that must be handled as carefully as possible. It is recommended to clean them with a mixture of wine alcohol and glycerin. The proportions must be equal. Contamination must be treated with a cotton pad moistened with this composition. The fabric will be cleaned after one and a half to two hours. After that, it can be washed in order to get rid of the remaining solution. This way you can clean both warm sweaters and silk dresses or shirts.
  • Often, drops of red wine fall into on jeans or other denim products. This material absorbs wine quickly, so if you have the opportunity it is best to work on the stain as soon as you put it on. Alcohol traces can be removed from denim with salt or baking soda - simply sprinkle on the stain and wait for the product to absorb.

Old wine stains can be removed from these clothes by mixing dish detergent with a little hydrogen peroxide.

  • Often the victim of unsuccessful gatherings over a glass of wine becomes carpet. Since it cannot be put into the washing machine, and in general, washing is quite inconvenient, you have to go a little different way. Either table salt or a mixture of egg yolk and glycerin works well here. Both products are applied to the carpet using a soft sponge slightly dampened with warm water. After the salt or yolk has absorbed the main pigment, you can proceed to cleaning. To do this, it is advised to use only products designed specifically for cleaning carpets. They deal with dirt more efficiently and faster, and do not harm the surface of the floor covering.

If you are dealing with some more delicate and thin fabric, then you should not wash it - just blot the contaminated area with a piece of cotton wool or a cotton pad dipped in a mixture of glycerin, ammonia and vodka.

Colour

In addition to the type of fabric, it is also important to consider its color. In general, all materials can be divided into colored and white materials. It is not hard to guess that it is the most difficult to remove the stain from the white fabric. Even traces of light splashes are noticeable on it, which already speaks of full-fledged marks that remain after you spill the contents of the glass on the tablecloth, or, even worse, on your own outfit.

There are three main ways to fight for the cleanliness of light-colored fabric:

  1. The most common is the use of peroxide in the contaminated area. It is she who is able to remove wine pigment from light fabric most effectively. It is enough just to wipe the material with it, set the item aside for ten minutes, and then wash it in warm water. The result will most likely delight you and pleasantly surprise you.
  2. Another effective remedy that can be found in almost every home is ordinary vinegar. It is also used to wipe down fabrics. The thing is then left alone for half an hour and erased.
  3. As an alternative to vinegar on white things, you can also use a citric acid solution. To prepare it, you just need to pour 2 g of acid with a glass of warm water. Citric acid, by the way, helps to remove traces of unsuccessful gatherings even from things that you have long despaired of cleaning, and fresh lemon juice is perfect for fresh stains.

You need to work with colored fabrics in other ways:

  • It is considered effective to use a solution of potassium permanganate. While at first glance it seems that this colored liquid will only exacerbate the problem, in practice this is far from the case. With a solution of potassium permanganate, the fabric must be processed immediately before washing. The solution should not be very concentrated - it will be enough to add only one teaspoon of potassium permanganate powder to a glass of water.
  • The second option is to use glycerin and yolk. This unexpected combination of simple products produces surprisingly good results. The yolk is used raw. In equal quantities, it must be mixed and applied for two hours to the fabric, which after this time must be washed. It works great on old stains.

But it is not recommended to use bleach on colored fabrics at all. They will make the fabric faded, which will not improve the situation at all. The only more or less suitable option is high-quality stain removers, created specifically for cleaning printed things.

How can you wash it off?

If you just threw a glass of wine on the cloth and are looking for a quick way to save the situation, then you can try to wash off the dirt with a napkin or a cotton swab soaked in water. If you do this on time, then you will not have to wash old stains from the fabric later.

Red wine will still leave a slight mark, but if you pre-treat the fabric with a damp cloth, then it will be much easier for you to cope with this problem at home.

If you have the opportunity to get to the bathroom immediately after such a lapse, then it will be even easier to wash the contaminated fabric. Use soap, water and alcohol. The correct and effective formula that will really help you remove wine stains consists of a spoonful of alcohol, a liter of water and a small bar of laundry soap, which will dissolve after a few minutes.

In this composition, you need to soak a dirty piece of fabric for twenty minutes, and after the thing is soaked, you can easily remove the dirt by washing the fabric.

But what you definitely shouldn't do is in a hurry, try to rinse the red wine off the surface of the fabric using hot water. This can lead to a completely opposite result - the wine will only penetrate deeper into the structure of the fabric, and when you try to remove the material in any other way, the stain will only turn blue or green.

Recommendations

Finally, I need to mention a few additional recommendations that will help cope with wine blots:

  • First, if there is a possibility, then it is best to deal with this problem right away. The sooner you wash the pigment off the fabric, the easier it will ultimately be to remove it completely. Keep in mind that in this emergency, hot water is the enemy and good quality white wine is a good helper. This trick is advised to hostesses by the most famous wine lovers around the world - the French.
  • It is also worth remembering that you can prevent "sprawl" spots over a large area. To do this, start brushing or rinsing off the alcohol from the edges, not from the center of the stain.
  • All these tools at hand work in most cases, but, alas, not always. Sometimes the stain does not appear at all or is already embedded so deeply that no matter how much you handle it, a light color still remains. If such a fate befell your favorite thing that you do not want to throw away at all, then you can give it one last chance by using dry cleaning services.

As you can see, wine stains are not always a sentence for your favorite item. Any experienced housewife will cope with cleaning such pollution quickly enough and without panic, but it is important to take into account all the recommendations.
