Choosing a mattress for a bed
Sleep is one of the most important components of good health and beauty. To feel cheerful and confident in your abilities, you need at least 6-7 hours of sleep per day. But it is not enough just to spend the allotted time in the arms of Morpheus. To sleep well and restore the spent resources of the body, it is necessary to accommodate with maximum comfort. A well-chosen mattress for the bed will help to achieve this.
Peculiarities
We spend a third of our lives in a dream so that the body can restore everything that it has spent during the day. The production of the necessary hormones, the brain sorting out memories and impressions, slow breathing and pulse - all important things happen while a person is asleep.
To get good sleep, experts recommend following a certain regimen, falling asleep and waking up at the same time, regardless of weekends and weekdays. Half an hour before bedtime, it is better to turn off the TV and put down the phone, engaging in meditation or opting for a paper book. If all of the above is carried out, and fatigue and bad mood still rolls over right after waking up, it may be the mattress.
Surveys conducted by various research institutes have revealed that buying a new mattress improves sleep quality by an order of magnitude, helps to reduce back and joint pain and even helps to cope with depression.
In cases where the mattress is still new, and the quality of sleep still leaves much to be desired, it is worth considering replacing its model, size or filler.

The first and most important characteristic of a mattress is its construction. Depending on the presence and location of the springs, all mattresses can be divided into two main groups.
Spring loaded
Most of the usual mattresses that can be purchased at any furniture store are spring mattresses. Depending on the location of these springs, such modern featherbeds, in turn, can be divided into two subgroups.
- With dependent springs. The springs of such a mattress are a strong woven mesh, which is a kind of metal frame. Such frame elements appeared and spread back in the days of our grandfathers and grandmothers and have more disadvantages than advantages.
Firstly, they do not support the back, which is fraught with morning pains and cramps. It is very difficult for two people to sleep on such spring mats, especially if the difference in weight between the spouses is very significant. A heavier partner will push the mattress more and literally create a hole.
And over time, a permanent depression will appear at the site of the temporary fossa, which will be a real torture for people with a sore back.
The springs are made of metal and during operation rub against each other with an unpleasant sound, often such featherbeds, which have served for a couple of years, creak mercilessly with any movement. At the same time, dust is also clogged into the space between the metal spirals, which is especially dangerous for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
The main and, perhaps, the only plus of these mattresses is their low price. If the lining is chosen for a guest room, a summer residence or in a rented home, you can stop at such a model, having received a certain level of comfort for a short time.
- With independent springs. In such mattresses, each spring is placed in a special fabric cover, isolated from the rest. This allows depressions to appear exclusively in places where pressure occurs. And the spirals adjacent to them remain in the unclenched state.
This design ensures healthy spine support and evenly distributes the load on the lumbar and thoracic back during sleep, both on the back and on the side.
Of course, the price of such a mattress is an order of magnitude higher than that of conventional frame options and depends on the number of springs per 1 sq. m of canvas. The more often the metal spirals are installed, the more firm the mattress is, which is especially important for those who have problems with the musculoskeletal system or are overweight. Most often, for them, manufacturers offer the most expensive orthopedic models that have an ideal ratio of hardness and softness, providing a comfortable sleep in any position.
A separate type of orthopedic mattresses are the so-called "zonal" models, which have certain areas with a more frequent arrangement of springs and more rare. This allows you to level the increased pressure on the mattress in the areas of the pelvis and shoulders of a recumbent person, increasing the durability of the product.
Springless
These mattresses consist of a dense cover and an inner filler. They are quiet, as they do not have metal parts inside, are easy to use and maintain and are very durable, but not as comfortable as spring models. The simplest version of such a mattress is a topper. A compact model that allows you to sit with a little more comfort not only on an ordinary wooden bed, but even on bare ground during a hike.
A separate subspecies of springless mattresses are water models. In our country, a rather rare guest, but abroad, such elastic slightly swaying featherbeds can be found in many houses. Inside the water mattress there are several separate chambers, into which liquid is poured with special additives that prevent the germination and reproduction of bacteria and parasites.
Some models have heating, which allows you to always go to a warm bed during cold weather.
The main disadvantages are the price and weight of such products. On average, a double water mattress weighs almost a ton, so rearranging such furniture alone will definitely not work. The use of such mattresses on beds with lifting mechanisms is strictly prohibited. It is also not easy to install and connect on your own, you will have to call specialists not only for this, but also for the so-called maintenance every 2-3 years.
Of course, Made of special materials, the cover will not be damaged by awkward body movements. But sharp objects, animal teeth and some other unforeseen incidents can literally put such an unusual feather bed in a puddle of the owner.
Dimensions (edit)
The optimal length of the bed and mattress is calculated based on the height of the tallest family member. It is necessary to add another 15-20 cm to this figure. The width can be calculated by laying the person on his back with his arms crossed on his chest. There should be enough space on the sides of it to comfortably roll from side to side and move your elbows without touching the partner next to it.
However, there are also standards for the dimensions of single and double models.
- Single mattresses: 90x200, 80x200, 80x90 and 120x80 cm.
- Double mattresses: 140x200, 160x200. 120x200 and 180x200 cm.
Single-bed mattresses are most often used for children's and teenage rooms. They can be placed on functional bunk beds or used in an adult bedroom. For example, for partners with a large difference in weight, it is best to purchase two separate mattresses of different firmness, connecting them with a single sheet.
Also, the width of two single mattresses allows them to be conveniently used for sliding beds, so as not to change the huge double version every evening.
An equally important parameter of a mattress is its height.
- Models up to 14 cm Are not mattresses in the full sense of the word. Such options are best used exclusively as a temporary lining for small children, for example, on a sofa or changing table.
- 14 to 19 cm Is the minimum mattress height for an adult springless design.
- 19 to 24 cm Is the height of a standard low-cost mattress to properly support the sleeping person's back.
- From 24 to 40 cm - elite orthopedic and zone mattresses with additional functions and high quality materials.
Excipients
It is difficult enough to find a mattress that is filled with only one type of material. Most often, manufacturers mix different textures to get a more durable, durable and at the same time budget mattress. It is best to give your preference to mixtures that are dominated by natural materials from the following list.
- Natural latex - made from the sap of the tree through a special treatment. It is a tough elastic foam that is hypoallergenic, does not wear out for a long time and has excellent anatomical properties.
- Coconut coir - fiber from the interfetal space of coconuts, recommended for children's mattresses. The fiber prevents the formation and reproduction of bacteria, does not rot and easily evaporates moisture.
- Horsehair - similar to coir in properties, but more resilient and elastic.
- Sisal - a material that is obtained from deciduous agave fibers, similar in properties to latex.
- Wool - can be used as one or more layers. Adds warmth and absorbs liquids well.
- Batting - dense padding of their cotton fiber. In recent years, it is quite rare, as it quickly crumples and dries for a very long time.
A mattress made entirely of natural materials is too expensive for most buyers. Therefore, someone stops at mixed models, while someone even prefers featherbeds with modern artificial filling.
- Artificial latex (polyurethane foam) - has parameters similar to natural, but slightly shorter service life.Old latex mattresses begin to flake and crumble.
- Memoriform - like latex, it is made of polyurethane foam, but with higher orthopedic properties. It has a short-lived "memory effect", repeating the contour of the lying body with grooves for some time after a person rises from such a mattress.
- Other Artificial Foams - based on polyurethane foam and orthopenes, there are other artificial materials that are suitable for stuffing featherbeds. In general, they all have fairly high performance characteristics and a long service life.
- Holofiber, struttofiber - hypoallergenic, breathable and dry quickly. They are very difficult to break or deform.
Top brands rating
A well-known brand does not always guarantee that absolutely any mattress in the store will suit everyone, but it almost always guarantees the high quality of the materials themselves and the reliability of the structure. Therefore, when choosing, it is better to pay attention to several brands that have received the highest ratings from buyers.
- Ascona - a domestic manufacturer producing high-quality certified mattresses of spring and springless design.
- "Ormatek" Is another domestic manufacturer famous for its huge range of sleep products. It produces not only mattresses, but also bed linen, pillows, blankets and much more.
- Dormeo - a wide assortment of the Italian manufacturer in the middle and high price segment will be appreciated by lovers of natural materials.
- IKEA Is a Swedish company that literally everyone knows. Its products have a very affordable price, while maintaining decent quality.
- Mediflex - another of our compatriots who specialize in orthopedic mattress models. Anyone who has had back problems is likely familiar with their products.
The price for budget models on average ranges from 10,000 to 35,000 rubles. Prices for more expensive models start at 50,000 rubles and end in hundreds of thousands.
How to choose the right one?
The most important rule when choosing a good mattress is to feel it with your own hands. This does not mean that you should give up online stores. It's just worth choosing those that provide the possibility of returning an unsuitable product. For the rest, it is enough to follow a few rules.
- Don't save. A good modern feather bed, as before, cannot be cheap. It is better to choose a mattress from the price range that the buyer can afford to the maximum. Still, a mattress is bought not for a couple of years, but for a whole decade.
- Stiffness is best adjusted empirically., focusing on your weight and the weight of your partner. The heavier the buyer, the harder the mattress should be.
- Select a product strictly according to the size of the bed, but it is better to purchase them together from one manufacturer. It shouldn't slide out of bed, but it shouldn't be too difficult to put it back in place.
- If possible, it is better to give preference to a mattress with independent springsas they are more durable.
Operating tips
In order for the purchase to last as long as possible, the mattress must be used correctly, washed and cleaned in time.
- Firstly, so that washing or dry cleaning is required less often, you can purchase a special cover (mattress cover), which can be easily removed and washed in an ordinary washing machine, when the mattress itself will have to be given to specialists. You need to change such a cover at least every two years.
- Secondly, the mattress itself must be periodically shifted from one side to the other: put the edge that used to be at the head of the bed, in the legs, and vice versa. This will distribute the load evenly and increase the service life.
- Finally, don't jump and tumble on the mattress. No matter how much I would like to feel like a child. Do not put hot objects on it, place the heater too close, try to bend it during transportation.
With proper care, modern mattresses can last at least 10-12 years.
