Round sofas: types and use in the interior
To get an original and at the same time cozy interior, a round sofa is indispensable. Due to the smoothness of its lines, it looks extravagant, but at the same time very elegant. However, if you decide to buy such a sofa, you need to choose the right one.
Peculiarities
Furniture in the shape of a circle is one of the most (if not the most) demanding on the size of the room and the furnishings in it. In a small room, such a sofa will not look, it needs a lot of space, even if it is very compact in itself. It should also be remembered that such furniture is always in the spotlight, so the rest of the furnishings should be, as it were, “around” it, adjust to it.
Due to the specific shape, it is not easy to put such a sofa directly to the wall or in a corner - even being moved as close as possible to one or the other, it will take up more space than, say, a corner rectangular of the same size.
Round sofas have the following characteristics:
- a semicircular seat, depending on the size, is suitable for accommodating one, two or more people;
- when disassembled, it is a circle, again depending on the size - one and a half or double;
- in most cases it is equipped with an inner storage compartment for bed linen and pillows;
- may have conventional armrests or in the form of rollers, or not at all;
- the average size of a sofa is 2x2.40 m.
Species overview
There are three types of round sofas: monolithic, modular and transformer (folding). Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Modular are more convenient in terms of ergonomics: modules can be disconnected if necessary and placed as you wish. It can be transformed into a round bed with a headboard, and into a sofa set around.
Monolithic structures are less overall, but they are much more stable, and it is more convenient to sleep on them. However, such furniture can only be put in a large or very large room, since it requires a lot of free space to look really impressive. Due to its futuristic shape, such a sofa instantly attracts the eye and gives the room a chic and extravagance.
A round folding sofa bed is an excellent solution for those who have a living room and a bedroom in one room. Such furniture will also be a good solution for a studio apartment decorated in high-tech or loft styles.
The transforming sofa can be, depending on the type of mechanism, roll-out, folding and half.
- In the withdrawable mechanism the base is equipped with wheels and rolls out from under the seat on them. This is the easiest type of mechanism to transform and does not require special strength from its owner.
- Half mechanisms used in modular furniture. The principle of operation is as follows: two semicircles are connected by means of fasteners or simply sliding into a round bed.
- For folding mechanism the presence of a backrest, which is folded back when the sofa is unfolded, and a sliding seat are characteristic. Thus, a comfortable sleeping place is obtained, much more comfortable than a modular one.
However, true comfort requires more than just a convenient mechanism. The quality of the filling and upholstery, as well as the size of the berth, are also very important.
Materials (edit)
Most often, for the manufacture of round sofas, metal steel frames are used, on which wood slats are fixed. Sometimes laminated furniture board or solid wood is used to create the frame.
For country houses, verandas and terraces, sofas with wicker backs and armrests, with seats upholstered in fabric with floral motifs in Provence style are perfect.
Excipients
In the seat of a sofa, either spring blocks or padding made of artificial latex are most often located. Sometimes a combination of both, sometimes with the addition of exotic fillers, such as coconut bark.
Springs are more comfortable when it comes to repeating body lines. However, they must be of high quality and durable, which means they are made of expensive material. Checking if the springs in your sofa are expensive or not will work. The only thing that can be advised in this case is to make a choice in favor of furniture manufacturers with a good reputation. High quality fillers are used in their products, so that the sofa does not sag or deform.
Synthetic batting of various densities and thicknesses is another fairly high-quality filler. Often a sofa bed has a built-in orthopedic mattress, which is very comfortable for sleeping.
It is best to choose soft models with a combined filler. This, firstly, increases the service life of the product, and secondly, it is more functional and practical, and therefore cheaper. Polyurethane foam is stuffed in the back, and batting in the sleeping place.
Upholstery
Having decided on the mechanism and design, you can move on to the appearance of your sofa. This is equally important, because the quality of the upholstery of the product determines how long it will retain its attractive appearance.
The modern furniture industry allows the sofa to be upholstered with any material - from genuine leather to tapestry. It remains to decide what you want.
Round sofas are more often found in the luxury segment of furniture, which means that they are upholstered with very high quality textiles or leather - natural or artificial, but always of high quality. Modern artificial leather is not leatherette that appears in the minds of every person whose childhood was in the Soviet and post-Soviet years.This is the so-called eco-leather made from artificial polymers, often in appearance completely indistinguishable from natural material.
As for high-quality textiles, these are fabrics with complex weaving (both natural and synthetic) - jacquard, tapestry. They can be plain or printed.
Leather upholstery easily deformed and torn from exposure to sharp objects, does not stretch well. Therefore, if you have a cat or dog, you should think several times before buying a sofa upholstered in leather.
Tapestry upholstery may have different colors, but always - a relief texture. It is easy to clean, which is important. Jacquard upholstery always has a pattern, and quite a large one. It is very durable, little susceptible to damage from mechanical objects. The velor surface is very soft and comfortable, however, poor-quality fabric can strongly accumulate static electricity and attract threads, wool, hair and dust, which will require constant cleaning.
Any fabric upholstery with pile can be allergenic, so those who have a predisposition to such a reaction of the body should choose very carefully.
Dimensions (edit)
The size of a round sofa is very important. Even for a small specimen, you need a room of at least 10 sq. m., if possible not cluttered. If we talk about large models, sizes from 3x3 m, you should evaluate whether it will be possible not only to place it in your room, but also how much space will remain there after placement. Ideally, the sofa should be able to be approached from all directions if it does not have a backrest or if it has a modular design. If it is monolithic and moved to one of the walls, then the approach should be from three sides, excluding the back.
Colors and styles
Since the round shape for the bed is original in itself, the interior does not always need a bright color of the model. Although designer furniture is often decorated in unusual colors - red, green, bright blue, purple. Black furniture looks very stylish, especially in contrast with light walls, and not necessarily white - it can be beige, milky or bright, but light shades: mint, pistachio, lavender, heavenly.
As for the style, it should be in harmony with the rest of the room, creating a single composition.
Choice of covers
Having decided to buy a round sofa, with a high probability, you will have to make the covers and bedspreads for it to order. It will be difficult to buy ready-made ones, since the choice, frankly, is not great. Basically, typical models of covers are sewn on traditional, standard sofas - rectangular, modular or monolithic.
Interior use
The main rule of a round sofa is that it should not stand in cramped conditions. In addition to a large area, the room should have a high ceiling and a wide doorway, especially if you are purchasing a monolithic model. Ideally, the sofa is placed in the center of the room, and the interior is formed around it. There should be no other large furniture in the room, especially if the area is "pumped up". An abundance of small items will create the impression of being cluttered, so this should also be avoided.
Another rule of thumb is to exclude other irregularly shaped pieces of furniture from a round sofa interior, especially if you are not a professional designer.
Be prepared for the fact that it will not work just like that to pick up the rest of the furniture in a set for a sofa of a non-standard shape. Suitable options will cost you a lot, since installing such a sofa will require replacing all the rest of the furniture in the room. If you have contacts of craftsmen who make custom-made furniture, then perhaps this will be the best way out of the situation - you will get the opportunity to create the interior of your dreams.
But even in this case, be prepared for the fact that you will find a round sofa either from luxury or premium manufacturers. In the middle and even more so in the low price segment, the probability of finding high-quality original furniture of non-standard shape is not an easy task.
