Book sofas are one of the most popular models on the upholstered furniture market. Their features of the transformation mechanism allow for different installation methods: by the wall, in the middle of the room. Folding sofa beds with an orthopedic mattress are suitable for daily use as a permanent bed, classic "books" will help you comfortably accommodate guests. However, this model has a ton of other configurations that are worth considering in more detail.

Peculiarities

A sofa-book is a piece of furniture equipped with a transformation mechanism. When unfolded, the classic model for 2 or 3 seats turns into a full bed for 2 adults... A sofa bed of this type has a reclining back and a seat that moves slightly forward. The front edge has no legs, hangs freely above the floor. On the sides are rigid or tiltable armrests.

The folding sofa-book is distinguished by its simplicity and reliability. The transformer can be unfolded and folded effortlessly; inside there is a spacious laundry box. Its device does not provide for complex elements, the absence of rubbing parts allows to guarantee a long service life of the entire structure.

The mechanism works silently, even a teenager or elderly person can perform the transformation.

Book sofas are one of the most popular models of upholstered furniture. The design is well known - it was produced back in Soviet times. Modern design solutions look much more attractive, in the corner version they help in zoning space in a spacious studio or attic.Sofa-book well suited for different premises, models for children's rooms, bedrooms, living rooms are available, you can even find compact kitchen versions.

This is the most versatile option that can be purchased for a spacious country house and small apartment.

Advantages and disadvantages

The sofa-book has a lot of quite obvious advantages for which its owners appreciate it.

  1. High strength. The design can withstand many unfolding cycles, and will last for years. It is the perfect solution for daily use.
  2. Convenient design. After unfolding, the sofa turns into a spacious double bed with a linen compartment inside. In some models, drawers are made instead of it, allowing you to store shoes or other bulky things. The sleeping place is quite spacious, without sudden changes.
  3. Compact format. The sofa-book fits well into small spaces. It can be installed close to a wall or in a corner, and then easily transform furniture if needed.
  4. Convenience. Modern models of these sofas are available with an orthopedic base suitable for people of all ages. Elastic filler or spring block, "snake" or polyurethane - you can choose almost any option for a given budget and personal preferences.
  5. Safety for the condition of the flooring. The sofa does not have legs that exert point pressure on the surface of linoleum, carpet, it does not scratch expensive parquet or laminate.
  6. Affordable cost... She makes this model massive, very popular. At the same time, in terms of quality, the piece of furniture is not inferior to its more modern counterparts with other transformation mechanisms.
  7. Maintainability. Broken elements can even be replaced by yourself. However, malfunctions are extremely rare.

Not without flaws... It is worth paying attention to the fact that if it is placed too close to the wall, the edge of the sofa with frequent unfolding can lead to abrasion of the wall covering. Paper wallpapers, cheap paint will quickly lose their appeal. You can avoid this, only observing a certain safety distance.

With frequent unfolding, the transformation mechanism may creak a little.

Folding sofas have several popular configuration options at once. They can be classified according to the type of construction, filling, and the presence of additional elements. All options are worth considering in more detail.

With or without armrests

Models with armrests are considered classic. The side elements act as supports for comfort during sleep and rest. Such models of sofas are chosen for small children, in the living room or in the guest room. The armrests can be completely rigid or supplemented with soft padding. Sometimes they can transform by changing the angle of inclination - this versatile option is called a click-gag.

The armrests used in the design of the sofa can be made of wood. Such a support has high strength, hardness, withstands significant loads, and is easy to clean. The wide base can be used as a laptop shelf, tea tray or favorite book.

If the sofa is pushed against the wall and is not used for sleeping, a designer lamp can be attached to the armrest.

Folding sofas without armrests are considered a more modern design option. They are more compact than the classic ones, they are easier to place in rooms with limited area. Such models of upholstered furniture look stylish, are distinguished by good ergonomics, they allow you to install other interior items close to the sofa: a cabinet, a coffee table, a pouf.

The cost of a sofa without armrests is often lower due to its ease of execution.

With laundry box and without storage system

Book sofa design provides opportunities for placing bedding and other useful things in its base... The linen box inside can be in 1 or more copies, sometimes it is divided into sections and blocks inside. In most cases, it can only be accessed when the seat is up.

Sometimes they are made roll-out, ensuring the availability of the storage system around the clock.

With different types of filling

There are 3 main categories of fillers used in the construction of book sofas.

  1. Spring loaded (dependent)... It can be a classic "Bonnel" or "snake" block, in which all the elements are interconnected. Such a base is quite elastic and dense, providing the sofa with a long service life. The orthopedic properties are low.
  2. Springless. They have a resilient filling made of foamed polyurethane or latex and provide a very high density. The absence of springs allows such sofas to be used in children's rooms. The only drawback of a springless base is the gradual deformation of the material from the load.
  3. With an independent spring block. Orthopedic structures of this type evenly distribute the load over the surface. The base is well suited for people with back pain. These sofas are more expensive, but the most comfortable while sleeping.

Straight

A classic sofa bed usually has just such a configuration. The direct arrangement allows for the convenience of using the piece of furniture both in the folded and in the transformed position. It is worth considering that it is this format that is suitable for small premises. In a spacious room, straight sofa-books are arranged in pairs - symmetrically, creating original interior compositions.

Angular

A sofa of this type has an additional side module, reminiscent of a couch. Only the main part remains folding. Book sofas with a corner structure differ in design, they are often used for zoning rooms. Furniture of this type can be placed along the wall, increasing the number of available seats and without cluttering up the space.

Types

Classic sofa-book it unfolds very simply. Its leading edge is moved to a vertical position until a characteristic click, then lowered. Boat models do not have armrests, the edges of the seat and backrest are slightly raised or have a click-claw mechanism to change the angle of inclination. This design helps the sofa-bed, when used as a bed, to ensure the correct position of the pillow, relaxes the back muscles.

Withdrawable

Quite a comfortable model for everyday use, does not require significant physical effort during transformation, which makes it quite a profitable purchase for use in a teenager's room, a nursery. The sofa consists of 3 parts: 1 hidden in the backrest, 2 in the seat. A strap is hidden under the bottom, pulling on which you can unfold the berth. The finished surface is large and even. Roll-out "books" are made on a metal frame with bamboo lamellas, the base itself is quite low.

"Eurobook"

If the sliding model has hidden elements, then the Eurobook is simply divided into a back and a seat - they are not fastened to each other. There are roller guides in the design of the product. When transforming, the seat is simply pulled forward, after which the backrest is placed in the vacant space. Eurobook is not the easiest system to use, it requires some physical effort.

It is worth noting that this type of sofa-book has a significant difference between the size of the back and the seat - they will seem too deep to people of small stature. Among the advantages of such a transformation system, one can single out the increased comfort of a berth without characteristic differences in height. When choosing it is better to give preference to a model with orthopedic type battens and a polyurethane foam block or independent springs as filling.

Dimensions (edit)

All commercially available book sofas can be divided into narrow and wide versions. The most compact models are also short. For example, a small version for a nursery can reach only 140–160 cm. Classic book - a three-seater sofa folded (with a raised back). Mini-versions have a two-seater seat, three of us simply cannot sit on this one, since the small usable area excludes this possibility.

On average, the size range looks like this: seat length - from 185 to 260 cm, depth - from 80 to 130 cm, height with backrest - from 10 to 105 cm.

The size of the berth also matters, it is calculated in the unfolded form.

  1. Width from 120 to 140 cm (more overall options - up to 160 cm). It is worth considering that a person of normal build requires at least 70 cm in width for comfortable placement. Narrow sofas are usually viewed as single beds.
  2. Length 105-185 cm... Models up to 180 cm are considered teenagers, an adult will be uncomfortable in such a sleeping place. The double family version should have a bed from 190 to 200 cm.
  3. Height from the floor. In roll-out models, it rarely exceeds 35 cm.In classic models, it can reach 50 cm.

The average weight of a sofa-book reaches 70-90 kg, the lightest models - with a pine base.

Full linen boxes, an increased number of seats increase the massiveness of the structure.

Materials (edit)

Depending on the design, the sofa-book can have a frame base of different types. Models with a base on a metal frame are more modern, considered to be resistant to increased loads. They use durable steel: stainless, painted carbon. The metal frame significantly extends the life of the furniture, makes it more resistant to external factors, reduces the weight of the sofa itself.

Wooden bases are still popular, but not as durable as their steel counterparts.... They are made from solid beech and other hard species, if you need to get a truly durable product "for ages." Economy class models are made from pine, birch, and also wood-based materials. They can crack during operation, and are less resistant to stress.

The choice of textile materials for a sofa-book largely depends on the class of upholstered furniture.

Eco leather

Multilayer material with texture and durability not much different from its natural counterpart. Eco-leather looks presentable and expensive, resistant to moisture, mechanical abrasion. This is a good solution for a home with small children.

Upholstered sofas of this type are more expensive than fabric sofas.

Tapestry

Upholstery fabric with a voluminous, textured weave of threads. The modern composition of the material allows a combination of cotton, wool, silk with artificial fibers (acrylic, polyester). This combination increases the wear resistance of the product, provides the upholstery with elasticity and resistance to deformation.

Tapestry does not fade in the sun for a long time, has an antistatic effect, is available in an unlimited number of colors and design options.

Matting

Upholstery in which the weave of the fibers resembles burlap. For furniture, types of this material are used, mainly consisting of artificial fibers. The mat has a characteristic "checkerboard" arrangement of threads, it can be smooth or fleecy... Linen and cotton fabric of this type, combined with acrylic, polyester fibers, dyed in bright colors, looks interesting.

Jacquard

Popular semi-synthetic upholstery fabric. Jacquard is characterized by high mechanical strength, wear resistance, and attractive appearance. The material is distinguished by a variety of ornaments, it is painted in different colors, depending on the weave, its texture takes on a coarser or more elegant look.

Chenille

A fleecy material suitable for upholstering sofas in living rooms or living rooms. Chenille is easy to clean, hypoallergenic, has an interesting texture.

In terms of wear resistance, it is not inferior to flock.

Velours

Delicate fabric with short, fine bristles. It cleans well, looks presentable, is resistant to fading and abrasion. The surface is very pleasant to touch - such a sofa can be made a central element in the interior of the living room.

Flock

Artificial analogue of velvet or suede. Differs in attractive appearance, soft nap. Flock is considered the optimal sofa upholstery for pets.

It is durable, practical, easy to clean.

This is only a small part of the materials used by modern manufacturers for the upholstery of sofas. The final decision always depends only on the future owner of the furniture.

Design

The external design of a book sofa is no less important today than its filling. For modern minimalist interiors, it is customary to select stylish and laconic gray, white, beige models in fabric textured upholstery. The same gamut, but already in leather, will fit into the classic style, decorate an office or living room.

For a bedroom, it is better to choose models with soft upholstery made of flock, chenille, velor.

Modern classics allow the use of only monochromatic colors in achromatic (gray, white, black) colors or calm pastel colors. It is worth adding brightness or geometric patterns, "newspaper" prints and the result will be avant-garde. Interest in bright sofas - canary yellow or mustard, grassy green - came from Scandinavia. Scarlet in white or black interior - a reference to the Japanese style.

Such a piece of upholstered furniture itself becomes an art object in the interior.

Beige and coffee tones are characteristic for country and eco style. They are harmoniously combined with natural wood furnishings, beams or logs in the wall cladding. V loft it is customary to buy a bright sofa in a matting or linen cover; it can be raspberry, turquoise, acid green or piercing lemon.

Lilac, pink tones are characteristic for romantic style... Purple sofa looks good in aesthetics Provence. You should be careful with prints in decoration. Lurid flowers or geometric elements call for a calm background. It should be borne in mind that after repairs it often turns out that such a sofa no longer fits into the interior design - it has to be changed or pulled over.

Selection criteria

When deciding how to choose the right sofa-book, you should pay attention to important criteria.

  1. Dimensions. They are determined by the availability of free space and the type of premises. For the bedroom and living room, the largest models for 4 seats and 2 berths are usually chosen. A teenage model with small dimensions can be installed in the nursery.
  2. Appointment... A sofa for daily use should have a convenient transformation mechanism, an orthopedic mattress for the most comfortable sleep. For the living room, you can choose a model with a removable decorative cover, with cushions to match the upholstery. Here you need to take into account the number of seats and the configuration - the best would be a corner or 4-seater straight sofa-book.
  3. Upholstery. You can choose the most comfortable options, taking into account some of the features of the fabrics. For example, flock is recommended for use in houses and apartments where there are pets - it is the most vandal-proof for claws and teeth. Leather and eco-leather upholstered models are usually considered as an option for an office or living room. They look impressive, but they are uncomfortable to sleep. Lint-free fabrics wipe off and lose their presentability faster than lint-free fabrics.
  4. Filling... An orthopedic sleep base is much more expensive than usual. If the sofa is purchased as a guest sofa, you can save money and purchase a spring dependent model or a version with PU foam inside the seat and back.
  5. Permissible loads. High-quality metal frames can withstand more pressure than their counterparts made of chipboard or solid pine. For people with a large build, with a lot of weight, this can be a decisive factor when choosing.
  6. The presence of armrests. Their presence in the structure can be important if the sofa is not planned to be laid out often. Side supports provide additional safety for small children, allow you to comfortably sit on the seat of great depth.
  7. The height of the berth. Not everyone is satisfied with the opportunity to get a more spacious sleeping place at a height of about 30 cm from the floor. People with a sore back, problems with joints, and those who are tall will be physically uncomfortable to use such a sofa.
  8. Transformation mechanism... Despite the popularity of the Eurobook, its classic analogue on hinges also does not give up due to its ease of use. Roll-out models are convenient where you need to get a very spacious place to sleep.

By following these recommendations, you can quite easily determine the optimal model of the sofa-book - with the desired parameters, design and functionality.
