Venetian highlighting: what is it and how to do it?
Nowadays, when TV screens and pages of glossy magazines are overwhelmed with artificial beauties, naturalness is especially appreciated. Hair is no exception, which can always look spectacular and truly luxurious if you choose the right coloring technique and shades suitable for toning. For brunettes, stylists recommend resorting to Venetian highlighting, which creates the effect of strands burnt out in the sun.
What it is?
When creating Venetian highlights, stylists drew their inspiration from films about Renaissance Rome. It is well known that nature rewarded Italian women with burning black hair, and no coloring agents had yet been invented at that time, so noble Italians took off their hats and put their heads under the rays of the scorching sun. Nature did its job and the strands acquired cognac, honey and wheat shades. Modern design Venetian highlighting is the lightening of individual strands by 2-3 tones; when dyeing, the curls are chosen randomly and tinted in several related shades. As a result, after the procedure, soft overflows are formed on the head, no contrasting tones are allowed here.
Venetian highlighting for brunettes is a good way to change your image without resorting to radical techniques. It is very popular with dark-haired women, it makes the hairstyle more embossed and multi-layered.Lighter curls give the appearance of sexuality and charm, soften the contour of the face and emphasize the expressiveness of the look, and the dark color highlights the geometry of the haircut, as a result, the look becomes more sophisticated and complete.
Painting in the Venetian technique has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the following highlights:
- in this case, only part of the hair is dyed, while the root zone is not affected; such dyeing dries naturally without the use of foil, therefore, the method injures the strands less than conventional dyeing;
- in most cases, when carrying out Venetian highlighting, several shades of the same color are used, therefore, the result is an effective distribution of color throughout the entire mass of hair;
- Venetian highlighting emphasizes multi-layered and graduated haircuts, cascade and asymmetry;
- as the hair grows back, the difference between full and colored curls is almost imperceptible, so the growing roots look natural and harmonious; such a hairstyle needs correction only after 3-4 months;
- coloring has no age restrictions - it looks spectacular on both very young girls and women with more elegant hair, and light highlights visually rejuvenate the face, make the oval more toned and distract attention from the onset of age-related changes.
However, there were some drawbacks. Since dyeing is done on dark blond and black hair, in order to create the effect of strands burnt out in the sun, they need partial discoloration, as a result, there is always a risk of overdrying the curls, which makes the hair more like tow. The technique is not suitable for all color types. However, even despite the high cost of dyeing and the risk of damaging some of the curls, the result is invariably luxurious, and with proper hair care, they remain soft and delicate, and the color is saturated.
How to choose a shade?
When looking for the optimal color for a Venetian highlight, it is very important to choose the right shades, otherwise your expectations may not coincide with reality. The optimal color should be in harmony with the tone of the main head of hair, the color of the skin and eyes of women. As a rule, highlighting with chocolate, coffee and nut shades is suitable for brunettes. For owners of brown and red hair, it is better to give preference to sand, honey and copper shades, and on dark blond strands, caramel, wheat tones, as well as ocher and ash look good.
Keep in mind that for women of "warm" color type it is best to use warm shades, and for "cold" types of appearance, respectively, cold.
Execution technique
Venetian highlighting is not suitable for all the fair sex. First of all, you should not do it if a perm or keratin straightening was previously done on the strand. The technique is not recommended for girls who have previously dyed their hair with henna, basma or other plant dyes - they prevent the penetration of pigment, as a result, the color at the output may turn out to be the most unexpected. In this case, highlighting can be done not earlier than 4–5 months after staining.
In addition, any manipulation of hair coloring by expectant mothers and lactating women, as well as during the course of antibiotic, hormone and chemotherapy, is strictly prohibited. Highlighting is contraindicated in the presence of any skin diseases and a tendency to allergic reactions. If the hair is thin and weakened, then a series of restorative procedures should first be carried out. To do this, you need to make nourishing masks 3-4 times a week for at least a month, apply serums and oils that will help prepare the curls for toning.
Otherwise, the strands will be thoroughly damaged and it will take a lot of effort, money and time to regenerate them.
Venetian highlighting is not so difficult to do on your own at home; it does not require the use of a hat, foil and other tools that are needed for other types of coloring. All you need is to decide on the choice of shade and stock up on free time. You will need at least 2 hours for all procedures. Prepare the following tools and products before painting:
- a bowl for diluting paint;
- comb with sparse fine teeth;
- brushes of two types - wide and narrow;
- latex gloves;
- cape;
- clips for strands;
- dye.
Important! Immediately before highlighting, you need to cut off the split ends, rinse your hair thoroughly with deep shampoo and dry the strands.
Before starting work, you need to know that the Venetian technique involves toning the strands indented 4–5 cm from the roots. First, you need to test the paint on a thin strand from the back of the head, if you like the shade, then this tool needs to be applied to all the other curls. At the same time, curls can be chosen both very narrow and, conversely, wide, alternating them with each other and using different brushes. The most popular home paints are brand products Londa, Garnier, Pallet and Estelle... Coloring compositions, in addition to brighteners and pigments, include softening oils for curls, components of plant extracts and healing components.
Step-by-step instructions for carrying out highlighting are as follows:
- to begin with, paint is diluted in a special container;
- then you need to select a working strand, and fix all the rest with clamps;
- the curl is pulled back and the paste is carefully smeared over it;
- all other strands are processed in the same way;
- the composition is kept on the hair for 30–45 minutes;
- at the end of the exposure time, the hair is thoroughly washed with shampoo and a balm is applied.
To get the result as expected, you need to know a few subtleties. So, the longer the composition stays on the hair, the lighter the shade will turn out. During highlighting, you need to carefully remove the mixture from one of the occipital curls - this way you can understand how much the color has changed in comparison with the original. Venetian highlighting is considered to be one of the most persistent types of staining - the result remains unchanged on the curls for at least 2 months, and since during staining the area near the roots was not affected, as it grows, the border between native and dyed hair is almost invisible and there are no frequent adjustments required.
Despite the simplicity of the Venetian technique, in the absence of the necessary staining experience, mistakes can be made. The most common is the wrong choice of color solutions and the thickness of the strands, as well as non-compliance with the indentation requirements. Moreover, any attempt to remedy the situation can only aggravate the already deplorable situation, which in the most unfavorable way affects the condition of the hair. In order not to damage your hair during the procedure, you should choose the right paint - it is better to give preference to professional products that do not contain ammonia.
If you cannot decide on the main shade of hair on your own, you should dwell on nude colors, they will not be too striking.
It is imperative that it takes approximately the same amount of time to apply paint to all strands, otherwise the staining will be uneven. Usually in salons this problem is solved due to the increased speed of work, but at home it is possible to level potential inconsistencies in shades by alternately dyeing asymmetrically located curls. If you nevertheless made a mistake, then only a professional master should correct it.As a rule, colorists resort to toning, thanks to which it is possible to effectively change the color of the hair. Unsuccessful Venetian highlights can be corrected by such methods as:
- after a few weeks, repeat the toning procedure;
- use a special wash that helps to restore the original hair color;
- dye all hair in a single color.
In any case, there is no need to worry - Venetian highlighting is easily leveled and takes on an aesthetic well-groomed look.
Follow-up care
In order for the hair color to delight you as long as possible, you should properly care for the dyed curls, namely:
- to wash your hair, you should use only special shampoos that do not contain sulfates, otherwise the coloring pigment will be washed out and the glare will become dull and faded;
- at least once a week, you need to carry out care procedures for the hair - masks, serum and rinsing;
- you need to minimize all thermal effects on the hair - you should limit the use of hot air when drying your hair, as well as styling with curling irons and irons.
