Origin story

The black pug was bred in China during the Song Dynasty. The breed was called imperial, although light representatives were more common then.

Light-colored pugs have more pronounced characteristic wrinkles, which were regarded as messages of the Buddha. Nevertheless, black and light pugs were equally revered, guarded and considered sacred dogs.

They were started not only by members of the imperial family, but also by representatives of the noble classes. It was they who at one time took pugs to Europe, where they immediately gained incredible popularity among rich and noble families.

The pug of the Prince of Orange, Pompey, went down in history, who saved his master, the future king, warning him about the appearance of the sent assassins with a loud bark. Having spread in Europe, pugs became very popular, they were often depicted by famous artists in their works, starting from the 16th century. European dog breeders, however, considered the black coat of the pug a defect and rejected them. It was only in the 19th century that the breeding of black pugs became permanent. It was at the end of the 19th century that the real excitement around the rare black pugs began.

The most important thing is to prevent overfeeding and gluttony of the dog, otherwise by the age of 8 he will suffer from obesity and his life will be significantly reduced. Obesity is also dangerous because it provokes the development of chronic diseases, disruption of the muscular and skeletal systems.

Genetically, dogs of this breed are predisposed to various diseases:

How to choose a puppy?

Before you buy a pug puppy, decide where to get it. It is not recommended to buy puppies from the markets by hand. A healthy puppy can be bought either from the nursery or from a breeder with good reviews. Even if the purity of the breed does not play a big role for you, it is important to assess the presence of genetic predispositions to diseases, which are reflected in the documents. If the line is free from such diseases, there is no need to fear for the health and life of the pug.

When choosing a dog, pay attention to behavior and appearance, which can be assessed by the following parameters:

  • a well-developed puppy is active, moves a lot, plays;
  • the eyes and nose are clean, the look is clear, there is no inflammation, pus;
  • the coat is shiny, has a bluish-black tint;
  • no rash, redness, skin irritation.

If you are planning to participate with your dog in exhibition forums, be sure to involve a specialist dog breeder in the selection.

Before you bring your puppy into the house, prepare everything you need:

  • stove bench with removable pillowcases;
  • bowls for water and food;
  • collar and leash;
  • toys;
  • means and tools for care.

The black pug's wool is not easily soiled and does not require special care. It is necessary to regularly comb it out with a special soft-type brush, natural bristles are preferable. Furminator can be used during molting.

It is very important to constantly inspect the dog's skin, especially in the folds, to clean them of dust and dirt. If you find inflammation, contact your veterinarian.

Pugs are not washed too often, it is advisable to do this as it gets dirty, otherwise the natural protective layer of the skin and wool will be disturbed. When washing, use special products for dogs, if possible, hypoallergenic. After water procedures, pugs are thoroughly wiped and allowed to dry completely in a warm room. Remember that these dogs are prone to colds, drafts in wet form are contraindicated for them.

Regularly inspect the auricles and clean them as soon as they become dirty with an ear stick, as gently as possible... If your ears are clean, it's best not to go into them. Pugs' teeth are brushed once a week with a special brush. You can replace this procedure with fluoride bones that remove plaque. They should be bought and given to your pet on a regular basis. If the procedures did not work properly and you notice plaque, you should take the dog to the doctor. In no case do not remove it yourself, otherwise you will damage the gums of the animal, which will lead to inflammatory processes.

The pug needs to have its nails trimmed regularly if they do not naturally grind on the asphalt. For these purposes, a claw cutter is purchased.Cutting claws with scissors is strictly prohibited. Basically, if the dog spends enough time for a walk and does not have too stiff nails, this happens naturally.

In addition to grooming procedures, it is very important to properly educate the dog, to devote enough time to training.

Pugs are quite quick-witted and obedient, but if you do not deal with them, they grow up selfish.

It is not difficult to train them, it can be entrusted even to a teenager. A good memory of a dog allows it to grasp all commands and acquire skills literally on the fly. It is very important to start upbringing from the first days of the appearance of the puppy in the house, gradually and gently teaching him the rules by which he will live.

Pug training takes place in the form of rewards. Punishments should be reduced to a minimum, not hitting or yelling at the dog. You should be patient, persistent and demanding, but not cruel. In any case, do not lose your temper, so the dog can only be spoiled. Pugs love to play, run, jump, active games are very useful for them at a young age. However, in adulthood, overwork for a pug can play a fatal role. You need to be more careful not to overload the dog, save him from too serious stress.

Pugs need early socialization, so once the puppy is vaccinated, it needs to be walked a lot and allowed to get to know other purebred dogs. It is better to walk in crowded places, parks, so that the dog learns from childhood to see many strangers, does not grow shy and aggressive.
