The mattress cover is able to keep the mattress in its original form longer. Easier to remove and wash. This way, the mattress will always stay clean and look great. In addition, certain types of covers allow you to adjust the surface of the mattress for comfort while sleeping.

Let's figure out how to choose the right accessory like this, what are the options and what are the differences between different types.

Peculiarities

The removable protective cover prevents the bed from getting dirty, extending its lifespan.

It is especially important to use additional protection when buying an expensive branded mattress with a long-term warranty.

Depending on the purpose of use, these products may have individual characteristics.

  • The cover can be waterproof - for example, for a baby bed or for use when caring for sick people. In such versions, there is a membrane, a rubberized layer or an oilcloth layer that does not allow the bed to get wet.
  • Hypoallergenic and antibacterial options are made of materials that do not cause allergic reactions and prevent the reproduction of bed mites, harmful microorganisms and mold.
  • Also with the help of a topper you can increase the softness of the bed, for this there are options with foam rubber, padding polyester or down.
  • If you are pursuing a goal increase the stiffness or correct imperfections in the berth - choose orthopedic models with an elastic layer, for example, based on coconut guillemot, polyurethane foam or latex foam.
  • After all, there are simply decorative covers... The variety of shapes and colors will allow them to fit into any interior.
  • The types of fixation are also different.: there are options that are placed on top and tucked under the sidewalls or with elastic bands at the corners, which reliably insure the thing from slipping, as well as elastic covers that are completely put on the mattress.

Materials (edit)

Mattress toppers are available in one, two or three layers. Sintepon and fluff can act as a filler to increase softness, often such models are additionally stitched. The quilted covers are beautiful and the cross-stitching keeps the filler material from straying. Coconut guillemot is used to correct defects and increase rigidity, polyurethane foam with memory effect or latex - for elasticity and individual comfort.

When choosing a product, pay special attention to its top layer: for the most part, the service life of the topper depends on it.

Jacquard

This fabric is characterized by increased strength due to a special method of weaving of threads. Most often, natural threads are used in production - linen, cotton or silk. The jacquard mattress topper will serve you faithfully for a long time. In addition, such models often have a stunning appearance.

When cleaning, avoid bleach and dry out of direct sunlight.

Jersey

Unlike jacquard, the knitting method is used in the manufacture, not weaving. Such material turns out to be very elastic and practical in everyday life. Thin and lightweight jersey covers are very easy to wash and dry. Such material is pleasant to the body.

In addition, when using the tension fastening method, the jersey does not create unnecessary folds, which is important when choosing an interior cover.

Mahra

Eco-friendly cotton, linen or bamboo fabric. The texture has a pleasant massage effect on the skin, and the villi create a feeling of comfort. Perfectly absorbing excess moisture, the terry mattress topper allows air to pass through, maintaining comfort. It is from terry that premium home textiles are made: towels, robes and napkins.

Recommended for very young children due to its hypoallergenic properties and softness.

Calico and satin

Coarse calico practically does not wrinkle, does not rub and is unpretentious in care. It is made from cotton threads and can withstand up to several hundred wash cycles. Best suited as a budget and discreet option, ideal in terms of price-quality ratio.

In the production of satin, similar materials are used, but a special weaving gives it a soft sheen. Satin does not wrinkle, and the smooth front side has an expensive and attractive appearance. However, a silk sheet will easily slide off such a cover, so when choosing, be guided by your preferences in the material of bedding.

Polyester

It is rightfully considered the most popular fabric in the world: 60% of modern home textile production uses polyester. Extremely resistant to physical influences: stretching, friction, abrasion... Does not form pills and does not stretch when wet. Pests or pathogens will not be interested in polyester. However, it can become electrified, which brings some inconvenience.

Wool

The mattress topper made of natural wool is considered beneficial for health: it improves blood circulation, perfectly retains heat, and does not cause allergies. It also absorbs excess moisture well and practically does not wrinkle, has increased density and strength. Most pleasant and comfortable in winter.

Polycotton

Fabric with a high content of cotton with a mixture of synthetics. During use, it almost does not lose its shape and color, it is easily erased and dries quickly.

Attractive cost distinguishes polycotton products from completely natural counterparts.

Dimensions (edit)

There are standard bed sizes that mattress and sofa manufacturers focus on.

The size of the cover should be suitable for the width and length:

  • on single beds (80x190, 90x200, 90x190 cm);
  • for one and a half (120x190, 130x200, 140x200 cm);
  • on double mattresses (from 160x190, 160x200, 180x200 cm);
  • children's mattress (usually 120x160 cm);
  • European standard (200x200, 200x220 cm).

Pay attention to the method of attaching the mattress topper. If it is attached with elastic bands in the corners, then the size should match the parameters of the berth. If it is put on top of the mattress around the perimeter, then depending on the material and thickness, a gap of 0.5-1 cm may be required.

Do not forget about the height of the mattress: if the fastening implies sidewalls, this parameter is just as important as the others.

How to choose?

The choice directly depends on the intended functionality.

  • A bed cover designed to protect an ideal mattress in all respects of comfort must be thin, breathable and easy to clean.
  • You should pay attention to a down or quilted padding polyester mattress topper if you want to make the resting place softer.
  • Foam or latex models will help to increase elasticity.
  • A colored topcoat fabric is fine if you want to protect your sofa or sofa from dust and dirt.
  • For a folding bed, you need a mattress topper that is suitable in size and folds together with the mechanism - for easy storage. The same goes for the pull-out sofa. That is, a filler made of brittle material is not needed here.
  • Coconut or polyurethane foam toppers are designed to level and harden the berth. For a round mattress, it is better to choose a cover with an elastic band around the perimeter, so that the edges do not spoil the appearance, or without fastening at all.

How to care?

Removable mattress covers are practical and easy to clean. Slim models without filler perfectly protect your furniture from external influences, eliminating the need for dry cleaning. Elastic covers made of stretch materials are easy to remove and machine wash. Drying the product on the balcony and putting it back on is as easy as shelling pears!

Moisture-proof membrane models can be washed at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees without spinning, but it is best to soak them briefly in water using a mild detergent and rinse by hand. It is impossible to iron rubberized products... Dry at room temperature, out of prolonged exposure to sunlight or high temperatures.

Orthopedic toppers cannot be washed at all, they can be cleaned with a slightly damp spongesoaked in a mild soapy solution should be dried flat. The same applies to foam-filled models.

Polyester or down quilted mattress toppers can also be washed, using the delicate mode, but it is still better to give preference to hand wash.

But the cover made of natural wool allows only dry cleaning with a soft brush.

Read the manufacturer's instruction label carefullybefore you start cleaning!
