Knives, as cutting tools, have been known since antiquity. Of course, in those distant times, they were made from roughly processed materials at hand - for example, obsidian. Over time, people learned how to smelt metals, and the quality of knives went up. Today, a great many manufacturers of these cutting tools are known. This article will focus on the Victorinox Swiss knives.

Victorinox knives: pros and cons

The history of this Swiss company begins back in 1884, when Karl Elsener founded his own knife business. After 7 seven years, he begins to supply his products to the Swiss army, becoming an official supplier. After another 6 years, he patented the famous "Swiss officer's knife". In 1909, he names his company "Victoria" after his deceased mother and develops an emblem for his products.

In the early 20s of the last century, the company changed its name to Victorinox due to the replacement of the main source material. Conventional steel was replaced by stainless steel, and the exact composition of this proprietary alloy is still a trade secret of the company. She began to produce kitchen accessories only at the very beginning of the XXI century - in 2001. The advantages of Victorinox chef's cutting tools include the following:

  • very high quality of both the blade material and the entire product as a whole;
  • corrosion resistance;
  • excellent sharpening of the cutting edge, which retains its sharpness for a long time;
  • ergonomic and comfortable handle;
  • a light weight;
  • duration of operation;
  • a wide variety of both individual models and sets.

Perhaps the only drawback of Victorinox products is their high cost. But it is fully justified by the excellent quality of the products. Kitchen products can be divided into several conditional subgroups:

  • for cleaning and cutting (vegetables, fruits);
  • chopping (for meat, poultry);
  • santoku - versatile kitchen helpers;
  • for steaks (pizza);
  • for bakery products;
  • sirloin.

Ceramic products can be distinguished into a separate category. They have their own advantages over their metal counterparts: they do not oxidize products during cutting, do not change the taste of products, and are very wear-resistant and durable. Folding knives, for example, from the Sentinel line are very convenient for tourist and other expeditions and can be used as canning knives.

Best options

Perhaps one of the best sets of chef's knives is considered to be a universal one. Forged chefs... It perfectly combines all the functions you need in the kitchen. With the smallest knife, you can peel and cut potatoes, tomatoes (any vegetables and fruits) or bread, with the other two you can cut meat, fish or poultry. Sure, you can opt for large kitchen kits with 12 or more pieces, but Forged Chefs replaces them with ease.

Although the best options among the products Victorinox you can search for a long time, all products are of the highest quality, and the choice is often determined only by subjective preferences. By the way, before purchasing any kind of Victorinox product, check it for authenticity. Since such knives in the ratings are always at the top lines and are in constant demand, there are a lot of fakes on the market, therefore it is important to be able to distinguish the original from the surrogate product.

First of all, pay attention to the handle and the emblem on it. The Victorinox brand is a pentagonal knight's shield with a Swiss cross in the center. By the way, for today Victorinox is the only company licensed to have a cross on its products... The color scheme may vary, especially in the case of colored knives.

Take a closer look at the base of the blade. The Swiss always mark it there. If it is not there or the quality of performance leaves much to be desired, they are trying to foist on you a surrogate. The markings must be on both surfaces of the blade and must be etched, not stamped on.Although on products of small size, the marking can be one-sided.

If your intended purchase meets these two criteria, most likely, you are offered the original Victorinox Swiss knife. But if you still have doubts, examine the product in detail. The sharpening of the blade should look perfect - no small burrs, notches, etc. Also test the opening mechanism (for folding models): hard actuation or other problems are unacceptable.

Packaging is an important factor in determining the authenticity of a product. Most of the models are presented in cardboard boxes, some in plastic cases or even without containers. Premium models are always sold in unique (individual) packaging. In addition to the product itself, the purchase must be accompanied by a warranty card and operating instructions.

Of course, the seller of the goods is also of great importance. If this is an official Victorinox dealer (large store), then the risk is minimized. If you are tempted to buy from hands, be sure to thoroughly study and check your future purchase. - after all, the danger of running into a fake in this case greatly increases.

Remember that genuine Swiss knives are always a guarantee of high quality.
