Initially, the Vibram outsole was made from a certain type of compressed, foamed rubber. Later, crushed metal dust was added to it to increase wear resistance.

The Vibram outsole is almost non-slip due to the special arrangement of the tread elements. Protectors must be high enough for good cushioning. They should not be very close to each other and should be tilted in different directions. There are practically no protectors in the center of the foot, all of them are located on the toe and on the heel. This positioning system also prevents dirt and small stones from getting stuck in the outsole.
