People spend a lot of time in a dream, because rest is necessary for a person to maintain health, full growth and development. For healthy sleep, you should choose comfortable and high quality blankets that can protect against temperature fluctuations and keep you warm on winter nights. Let's dwell on the advantages and disadvantages of cotton blankets.

Advantages and disadvantages

A wadding blanket is a practical and thick product. It is used to cover the body during daytime or nighttime rest. The filler consists of one hundred percent hewn cotton wool, and coarse calico, chintz, satin, as well as satin or microfiber are used as a cover. In stores, you can find products based on mixed filling, combining cotton and artificial fibers - depending on the manufacturer, they can have a different percentage.

In the Soviet years, batting blankets were widespread; our mothers and fathers slept mostly under such blankets. But at the end of the last century, they were replaced by more modern and, accordingly, more expensive materials. But today people remembered the good old batting blankets.

After all, their advantages are obvious.

  • Heavy weight. Research has long confirmed that people sleep better under heavy blankets.

  • Antistatic. Such blankets retain heat well, do not electrify. This is especially true these days when residential buildings are overflowing with household appliances that generate static electricity. This leads to insomnia, migraines and loss of energy, sleeping under a cotton blanket minimizes these negative effects.

  • Security. Cotton blankets are made exclusively from natural materials; they do not pose a threat to the health of children and adults.

  • Hypoallergenic. Batting is optimal for people with diseases of the skin and respiratory systems, as well as allergies.

  • Comfort. The batting-based textile is pleasant to the touch, gives comfort and warmth.

  • Uniform distribution of the filler. The high quality of the stitching ensures that the bedspread will not be knocked together.

  • Practicality. With careful handling, these blankets can last up to 3 decades.

A pleasant bonus will be a democratic price - a wadded blanket is an order of magnitude cheaper than blankets with any other fillers.

There are also disadvantages.

  • Cotton filler is difficult to clean manually due to its weight. In addition, these blankets must not be machine washed. Even after dry cleaning, unaesthetic stains appear on them.

  • Cotton wool often absorbs foreign odors.

  • Natural cotton fibers become a breeding ground for dust mites, bedbugs and other parasites.

  • Cotton wool absorbs moisture well, but at the same time it removes it poorly. These blankets require beating and drying regularly - at least once a quarter.

Depending on the sewing technique, there are several types of wadded blankets.

  • Quilted - these are products in which the cotton filler is attached to the cover with a stitching. Such models are most in demand, since they provide uniform redistribution of batting over the entire area. Even at low temperatures, quilts provide comfort and warmth.

  • Karostepnye - these blankets are handmade. They are distinguished by a complex pattern. They look stylish and have good thermal insulation. However, if the pattern is large, then over time, the cotton wool begins to stray and unevenly distributed.

  • Cassette - the most expensive products, they consist of several separate blocks. Each of them is filled with cotton wool. The creation of partitions helps to keep the filler in one place, preventing it from moving.

Blankets made of wadding differ in such parameters as the structure and composition of the fibers, their density, as well as thickness and color. The filler itself can be made from both completely natural and mixed raw materials.

Dimensions and weight

Batting blankets are available in several sizes.

  • Children's models, for young children - 110x140 cm.

  • 1.5-bedroom - 140x205 cm. They are relevant for adolescents and adults who prefer to sleep alone.

  • 2-bedroom - 172x205 cm. Such models are optimal for a couple of people sleeping under one blanket, as well as for people who are resting alone on a spacious bed.

  • Euro - 200x225 or 220x240 cm. Designed for a couple who cannot sleep when they approach each other.

The quilts are very heavy. Their final mass depends on the parameters of the product - its length, height, width, and also on the density (that is, the specific gravity of each volumetric unit).

For example, for a blanket with parameters 140x205 cm and a density of 500 g / m2, the standard weight is 1.5 kg.

Design

Cotton filling can be white, yellow or grayish in color. If the blanket is made of tinted yarn, it is colored in multi-colored shades. Nowadays, many colors are presented. Blankets come in blue, green, red and multicolor, so you can always use wadded items without a duvet cover. Covers are usually sewn from natural fabric. In stores, you can find both plain products and products with abstract ornaments.

In a situation where the blanket will be used without a duvet cover, it is advisable to choose it taking into account the general style of the bedroom. It can be the same shade as the entire finish. Or maybe, on the contrary, give a contrasting accent.

Quilts with a satin surface look very impressive; they are often used as stylish blankets.

Care Tips

The cotton blanket should be regularly ventilated to allow any excess moisture to evaporate. It is best to do this in warm and dry weather in a draft, while avoiding direct UV rays. For cleaning, it is advisable to take cotton blankets to dry cleaning; in a domestic environment, regular vacuuming is sufficient.

Cotton padding is a cotton processing material. Unlike synthetic fillers, it retains moisture. As a result, when wet, the weight increases by 4-5 times. That is why washing products due to their large mass is a lot of trouble.

If you still have to wash, then it is best to do it in the summer - then the blanket can dry out quickly. Previously, it is thoroughly knocked out or vacuumed. A completely wadded blanket is soaked only if there is organic pollution or a pungent odor.

Washing takes quite a long time. It will require:

  • concentrated laundry soap;

  • water;

  • foam rubber;

  • liquid laundry detergent;

  • any stain remover.

It is not easy to clean a blanket properly. It is laid on a firm horizontal surface, smoothing out all the wrinkles. Then a soap solution is made based on water and liquid washing powder. If the product is heavily contaminated, add laundry soap and stain remover. Whisk the cleaning agent and apply the foam to the contaminated area with a sponge. After that, wash with running water until all foam is removed.

Important: it is undesirable to twist and wring out the wadding products. It is best to blot them with a soft cloth.

The small blanket is machine washable. In this case, it is necessary to adhere to some recommendations.

  • Only liquid detergents can be used. They wash out faster and do not leave any streaks on the surface.

  • Washing should be done in a gentle mode at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees.

  • The spin option cannot be activated.

  • Tennis balls or balls intended for washing down and feather items should be placed in the drum.

Alternatively, steam cleaning is considered to be more gentle. In addition, such treatment eliminates not only stains, but also carries out additional disinfection, destroying ticks, as well as bacteria, fungi and moth larvae. To carry out this procedure, use an iron with a steaming option or a steam generator. This method additionally removes all unpleasant odors.

During drying, the blanket is covered with a thin cloth. It is not recommended to hang it on a rope - in this case, the product will inevitably be deformed.

Before use, dry items should be vacuumed or thoroughly knocked out to completely remove all residues of washing powder.

Cotton blankets can last up to 20-30 years. However, manufacturers advise changing them every 5 years, since an environment is created inside the batting that is favorable for the development of a population of dust mites. However, the price of this product allows you to freely buy new bedding.

Review overview

Quilts are affordable, so they are widely used in budgetary institutions. Such blankets are widely used in hospitals, clinics, kindergartens and schools with organized day care groups. No military unit can do without such a bedding accessory.

For a long time, these blankets were undeservedly forgotten. But today they are in demand again. They can be single or double, so they are bought for both adults and children. Users note that these are comfy and comfortable blankets that keep you warm at night.
