In European countries, you can hardly find a white German shepherd, but this breed is widespread in Canada and America. An animal with pronounced inclinations of a shepherd is distinguished by nobility, external beauty and attractiveness. It is no coincidence that these dogs, easily amenable to training, often appear in films.

Origin story

The White German Shepherd Dog shares common roots with the more familiar color. Dogs with a non-standard coat color exhibit a recessive gene, which is inherent in the German Shepherd breed as such. Snow beauties are not albinos by nature. Except for the color of their coat, there are no other "oddities" in their appearance.

The first white shepherd dog is considered to be a dog named Verno, which was registered as a representative of the breed back in 1913. His grandfather, by the way, was also white in color, used as a herding dog. A man named Max von Stefanitz was engaged in breeding of such interesting four-legged according to external data, who sought to breed a breed that was ideal in terms of herding qualities.

In the German German Shepherd Club, the white color of the coat was recognized as an unacceptable deviation from the standard. Dogs with this color were disqualified.

However, there were also supporters of the "breed" who did not consider the unusualness to be a marriage.

The formation of appropriate clubs began, attracting lovers of the original breed. Registers of the corresponding dogs have been known since the 70s of the last century. The white German shepherd was recognized as a full-fledged independent branch of development among the population of domestic animals in the United States at the end of the last century.The breed returned to Europe under the name "American-Canadian White Shepherd".

Since 1991, white shepherd dogs have been registered in the Register of the Swiss Stud Book. And in 2002, the concept of the white Swiss shepherd appeared, which has a very distant relationship to Switzerland itself. Although this does not negate the fact that Many breeders around the world still consider the light coat of these dogs a disqualifying trait.

Features of the breed

The coat of a white shepherd dog, with a thin short undercoat, is usually long, thick and coarse. It is coarser to the touch than normal dark-colored German Shepherds. The weight of the dog sometimes reaches 38-40 kg, depending on the sex of the animal. The growth of individuals is 55-65 cm.

Color is not the only thing that sets such shepherds apart from traditional German ones. Unlike the usual ones, the white croup is not sloping. The body structure is more harmonious:

  • the chest is wide, muscular;
  • pronounced withers;
  • a beautiful neck with a noble bend;
  • elongated muzzle;
  • nose color - black;
  • hazel almond eyes;
  • powerful jaw, black lips;
  • high and erect ears.

These dogs usually do not have problems with the back and hind legs.

Character and behavior

Gentleness of character is one of the reasons why people get exactly white German shepherds, and not owners of the traditional black and gray color. Unlike the usual ones, such dogs are practically not hired for "police work", since their watchdog capabilities are limited to warning barking about the approach of an outsider. White does not have a share of aggression necessary for such an occupation. But their character is enough to be rescuers or guides.

Such handsome men are often shy, timid and even shy. In order for them to be able to adapt to life among people and their own kind, their education should be started as early as possible. Then this creature will make a faithful companion.

These dogs "are different intelligence and ingenuity ", as stated in one of the popular Soviet cartoons. Working out with a white friend is a pleasure. He easily makes contact, loves the difficult tasks that the owner sets for him. In addition, it shows excellent "sports" opportunities. He gets joy if he is given the opportunity to swim, play with a ball, and also take long walks and accompany him on travel.

Thanks to the affectionate disposition of the "shepherd dog" easily converge with children, patiently enduring their spontaneity and pranks... Small family members are treated as objects of care - in canine nature, herding instincts are turned on at this moment. They look at other domestic animals, even cats, with indulgence and benevolence.

Need frequent communication. "Talkativeness" is an interesting trait of their character. Such dogs are masters of complaining about life or expressing intonations their opinion on a particular occasion, which not every person likes. But if he himself is sociable and is always ready to talk with a four-legged friend, such a dog will be very useful.

When someone unfamiliar appears in the house, white shepherd dogs avoid coming into contact with him. Instead, stay away from the guest. But if they see that the owner or children are in danger, they are able to show aggression towards the ill-wisher, and the pet's reaction will be instantaneous. In this respect, whites are no different from their ordinary German counterparts.

Conditions for keeping

It is not advised to have such a large dog for owners of small-sized housing, since the four-legged inhabitant will be very uncomfortable in it. But in a separate house with a large yard, located in the private sector, the pet will feel at ease.

Keeping in the yard is not a problem already because white shepherd dogs have a warm fur coat. You don't have to worry about freezing if there is a reliable booth in which the wind does not walk.Many consider the dog's yard lifestyle the most preferable, given that the beloved handsome man sheds all year round.

If besides the apartment there are no other options for placing a pet, a powerful vacuum cleaner must be “attached” to the dog, since the wool will be all over the house, and it is very noticeable on any objects.

It is advisable to have a convenient walking area near the place of residence, so that the dog always has the opportunity to physically load itself while moving, playing and communicating with the owner. "White" cannot be locked up for a very long time, demanding activity and impressions. If you keep them at home constantly, they will plague with barking, whining and mournful songs.

Feeding

The German White Shepherd is picky about food. Both special dry food from the store and ordinary food prepared at home will do it (just not to be confused with the remnants of the master's dinner).

If you feed the dog with special food, it is undesirable to choose ready-made nutritional mixtures of promoted brands that are in every supermarket. It is best to consult with the breeder in advance on this matter. You need to choose food, taking into account the weight and age of the animal, so that the diet is balanced. It is best to offer your pet food premium class. Cheap options can provoke the development of gall, kidney stone disease and even oncology.

When deciding to have a white German shepherd in the house, it should be borne in mind that it is basically impossible to save money on food for such a dog.

Even a puppy needs to eat 200 grams of meat, a couple of eggs and 150 grams of cottage cheese every day in order for him to turn into a strong healthy individual. In addition, the diet should contain bone meal, cereals and greens.

How to care?

The dog's well-being, external attractiveness and life expectancy depend on the correct care of the dog. If you constantly show attention to your pet, he will be around for a good 15 years, or even more.

  • So that your beloved dog does not suffer from joint dysplasia characteristic of large breed dogs, up to 6 months of age, or even up to a year, it is better not to burden him with serious physical exertion during training and walking.
  • It is also not advised to use drugs that stimulate the growth of the dog.
  • For an adult white shepherd dog to feel vigorous, it needs a systematic running, including overcoming obstacles. If the energy does not find a way out, you can prepare for the fact that it will be directed to "destroy the house" when the bored dog wants to frolic.
  • Not catching a destructive virus will allow strict adherence to the vaccination schedule, and hygiene procedures include daily combing of the coat.
  • You can also bathe your white pet, but no more than 3 times a month.
  • Attention should also be paid to the eyes of the White German Shepherd, especially if the pet is already aged. Over the years, the breed has become increasingly sensitive to dust and salty sea water. To prevent eye irritation, you will have to rinse them with light tea or chamomile infusion.
  • The ears also need attention. They are systematically cleaned with a cotton swab.

Education and training

The easiest way is to deal with a small puppy. He easily accepts the conditions of living near the owner, quickly understands what rules of conduct in the house must be strictly followed, easily masters basic commands. Thanks to this, the grown dog is much easier to train. If she got into the house as an adult, it is more difficult to establish relations with her and force her to follow the rules of behavior, although this is quite achievable.

It is very interesting to train the White German Shepherd. She quickly memorizes commands and rapidly expands her store of skills. It is unacceptable and pointless to use force on a four-legged friend. He is naturally obedient.

If you are zealous in demonstrating your superiority over the animal, it will end in aggressive behavior on its part.

At the same time, if the white German shepherd is not given enough time and attention, it again becomes aggressive towards other representatives of the canine tribe, especially towards individuals of the same sex. Her behavior can be unstable, with sharp attacks against the background of fear.

To avoid trouble, as with any dog, you need to observe consistency in your actions, patience and goodwill. And then you won't have to blush for the behavior of the tailed beast. For many years he will be a reliable friend and pet in the family.
