Until a few years ago, experienced tailors did not have much choice when working on a sewing machine. The range was limited to a few models. Nowadays, manufacturers surprise their fans with new developments every year. True, understanding new designs and their differences is not so easy even for professional seamstresses. Let's try to learn the difference between overlock and carpetlock.

What it is?

The main function of the overlock is to overcast the fabric and cut off excess material. This unit can be seen in any sewing studio. A coverlock is the same device, but it has many more features. In the work of the carpetlock, you can notice the features of an overlocker and a cover sewing machine. This technique works with any type of fabric. First, let's explore the main similarities between overlock and coverlock. First of all, this is the solution to the main task - cutting and overcasting. Both devices do not have the shuttle mechanism of the classic sewing machine. Threading takes place in both devices through loopers.

These two devices are also similar in the presence of a special knife, which serves to cut off excess threads and to give the cut a more neat appearance. Both options can work with intricate fabrics, all types of knitwear, swimwear fabrics and other stretch varieties.

Both devices cope well with bulk materials, which include, for example, linen, tweed, wool.

What is the difference?

So, now let's try to figure out how these two similar units differ. The differences are in the following criteria.

  • Functions. The overlocker is designed for efficient overcasting, and the overlocker, in addition to solving the same problem, is able to join fabrics to each other, which is not typical of overlockers.
  • Refueling. At the beginning of work with the overlock, you need to eliminate the previous threads and install new spools. In some models, this process is automatic. In a carpetlock, the procedure for replacing threads is quite problematic, and you cannot do without a careful study of the instructions.
  • Complexity. Working with an overlock is much easier than with a carpetlock, since the first option is less functional, it has fewer additional lines. The coverlock is capable of performing several tasks, in its arsenal there are more than 20 stitches, including the most difficult ones. Therefore, such a unit requires more professional skills.
  • Number of coils... The most common version of an overlock is a two-strand one, and in general, the number can reach 5. In carpetlocks, there are both 5 coils and 10. Although, as practice shows, a three-strand version of an overlock is enough for work, and a carpetlock is rarely needed.
  • Number of loopers. The overlocker has two loopers and the carpetlocker has three. This element, which looks like a hook with an eye, is used to hook threads and sew complex chain stitches. In this way, a three-looper carpetlock can perform more different manipulations.
  • Equipment shape. Pay attention to the appearance of the units. The overlocker leaves almost no space on the inside of the presser foot, while the overlocker has an extended area for the length of the sleeve. This place is necessary for connecting parts.
  • Maintainability. If the overlock breaks down, then the master can easily fix the malfunction. A more complex carpetlock mechanism will require more professional skills from a craftsman, and not every specialist will be able to cope with the task of repairing a carpetlock. Another difficulty in the repair will arise in the search for suitable parts - spare parts for the overlock are much easier to find than for its "rival".
  • The weight. The overlocker is somewhat lighter than the carpetlock, so when used at home, work with it will be simplified.

How to choose?

When wondering what is better to choose, one should take into account all the pros and cons of both devices. The overlocker does an excellent job of overcasting garments in one go, the same function is also available for the carpetlock, but in addition it performs a cover-up method of processing knitted fabric - a flat seam. It does a great job of finishing the neckline. If the buyer chooses a machine exclusively for overcasting, then it makes no sense for him to overpay for the carpetlock - the work of one overlock is enough. If the future owner of the technique often sews knitted items, then carpetlock should be preferred.

If the choice fell on a carpetlock, then keep in mind that it is a rather expensive device, which, moreover, will require a lot of experience, not only in sewing, but also in handling a multifunctional machine. For example, when working with knitwear, a tailor has to learn how to quickly change gears.

When choosing a carpetlock, think several times if you need additional functions., because even specialists practically do not use them in the process of working with a carpetlock. Sometimes these unnecessary options only complicate the process of device setup and operation.

In general, it is impossible to say unequivocally which is better - a carpetlock or an overlock, since it all depends on the needs of the buyer, his financial capabilities, experience and personal preferences. But in any case, when buying, it is important to make sure that the machine is fully functional, all components are in place, the instructions provide for the rules for working with the device in Russian.

The place of purchase is also important when buying. So, when ordering the unit via the Internet, use only the official websites of the manufacturers, as well as verified online stores, which have a warranty period. If the purchase is planned in a stationary store, then choose for this specialized departments for the sale of sewing equipment - experienced sellers usually work here who will help you make the right choice. If the work on the typewriter will take place at home, then used devices that can be selected on the classifieds website are quite suitable.

However, when meeting the seller and the equipment in person, take a person with you who has experience with sewing equipment in order to reduce the risk of buying a pig in a poke.

Difference from a cover sewing machine

There is another type of sewing machine called a cover sewing machine. It is designed to work with knitwear. The mechanism of the "unfolding" makes it possible to carry out a chain seam, a three-needle seam, a two-needle seam wide and narrow. Some aspiring tailors may get confused about all of these concepts. All 3 machines are similar in the presence of a looper, which eliminates the need to use a bobbin. The difference is as follows:

  • the cover-sewing machine has a rather long sleeve in comparison with the carpetlock and even more so with the overlock;
  • The "cover-up" has a spreader and a looper that allows you to make a flat cover-stitch on knitwear (the same function is inherent in the cover-lock, but the overlock is devoid of it).

Thus, if you need 2 options at once when sewing - overcasting of cuts and processing of knitwear, then it makes no sense to buy two different devices - overlock and cover sewing machine, it is better to save money and space in the room and buy a carpetlock, combining the functionality of two machines.

In addition, thanks to the ability of the carpetlock to make chain stitches, the buyer saves himself the trouble of buying a classic sewing machine.
