Cutting patchwork
Many needlewomen are very fond of sewing, but when working with fabrics, there are usually many rags left that are a pity to throw away. It turns out that with them you can realize interesting creative ideas by adding a little material and your imagination. Patchwork sewing can be interesting for both professional seamstresses and beginners who want to diversify their everyday life. What is required to create a beautiful blanket and other interesting handmade products, we will find out in this article.
What is required?
With the help of patchwork sewing in the “cut-off” technique, you can create unique things without leaving your home. These can be both banal kitchen potholders and more complex products, including pillows, small rugs, as well as whole patchwork walls and blankets. In general, using this technique, you can create anything, the main thing is that you have enough patience for it.
Required for sewing.
- A sewing machine (although you can also sew small items or certain parts by hand).
- Knife or scissors for cutting fabrics. It is advisable to purchase a special roller knife, which is used directly for patchwork sewing. Such a knife definitely needs a backing on which the fabric is cut. On a special backing, there are all measurements for correct marking on fabrics.
- Ruler, needles, pins;
- Pencil or chalk to mark fabric.
For patchwork sewing, you can purchase a new fabric or use the leftovers, if there are enough of them for the desired product. You can buy a variety of threads.
How to do it?
Many people believe that patchwork is very simple, you just need to cut even pieces and sew them into one piece.Actually this is not true. Since the patchwork technique is related to patchwork, to master it, you should start small.
Patchwork using the "cutting" technique involves stitching a plurality of patchwork elements into one whole, then assembling the product itself, placing it on a substrate (lining), creating an edging and tie. For example, to create a bedspread, on average, it will take about a hundred scraps.
Today there are a variety of ready-made schemes and master classes, which are especially easy to navigate in the "cutting" technique.
Consider a master class that uses blocks of fabric squares. The finished work can be used as a rug, pillowcase base or a canvas on the wall, depending on the size of the desired product.
Prepare for work:
- the necessary equipment, which was mentioned above, including scissors and a roller knife;
- the remains of a variety of fabrics and, of course, you need to have a little patience.
Let's consider the work step by step.
- Cut fabric squares in advance. It is preferable to choose multi-colored fabrics with patterns that differ from each other.
- After cutting out the squares, they should first be decomposed into the desired pattern. For example, they can be staggered or chaotic. From nine pre-cut squares, you can get one large.
- Next, we sew the product, leaving the seam no more than 0.8 cm.
- It is advisable to iron the fabric allowances along the columns (diagonally) of the product, so it will be more comfortable to work, and horizontally, on the contrary, iron it out.
- The result is a preliminary product, which can then be cut again into equal parts horizontally and vertically. As a result, you should get again four identical squares, which can be supplemented with other squares made of fabric of a different color, and then sewn all over again. So, you can do it several times to obtain the desired size of the product, as well as to create a unique pattern.
When you add a border to the resulting product, you can easily make a pillowcase, and when you add a few more blocks in a row, you can get an excellent tablecloth for a summer residence.
Exactly according to the same scheme, you can sew not only squares, but also stripes, using general recommendations. Stripes make great bedspreads. Often, needlewomen get triangles from squares.
Squares and triangles, with basic sewing and patchwork skills, can be used to sew quick quilts. A quilt is a product that is sewn from different pieces of fabric of the same width or different.
