How to disassemble a piano?

When buying a piano, hardly anyone thinks that one day they will have to throw it out. It seems that this tool is therefore made cumbersome to serve more than one generation. But sooner or later, the piano falls into disrepair or simply becomes unnecessary.

Taking into account its weight and dimensions, the tool is not easy to take out. Better to be patient - and take it apart. In the article we will tell you how to do it correctly.
What tools do you need?
Disposing of a piano is not as easy as it seems at first glance. It will not work to take and break the piano in some way for throwing away; it will also not work to hand over the entire piano for scrap metal, since it also contains wooden components.
The legislation prohibits taking out large-sized household items to garbage cans, for which you can get a fine. It remains to disassemble the tool, and then act separately with each of its parts. You can entrust this business to those who specialize in this area. But those who know how to use tools can do it with their own hands at home.

It is quite possible to get the job done in a few hours if you have a pry bar (or crowbar), a screwdriver, wire cutters and possibly a hammer. In addition to the tools and a certain skill in using them, it would be good to know how the structure works - this will help you cope with disassembly faster, and increase the safety of your actions.
The main parts of the piano:
-
wood case;
-
sound system (resonance board, strings);
-
mechanical system (hammers, pedals, levers, mountings).
The last elements are the most dangerous, when disassembled, they can cause injury, as they are fastened with springs.And also with care it is necessary to separate the cast-iron bed from the side holders. Disassemble the piano with extreme caution and without sudden movements. Let's consider some points separately.

Parsing the case
A complete disassembly of an old piano begins with dismantling the case. The procedure is as follows:
-
covers are removed (from the upper and lower parts);
-
the front panel is removed;
-
keys are extracted;
-
the bar that held the keys is unscrewed;
-
stubs on the sides are removed;
-
the main screws are unscrewed.

Do not rush to throw away the wooden parts of the piano body, they can come in handy on the farm.
Removing the keys and cutting the strings
Removing the strings and removing the keys is started after the wooden parts have been removed. The strings are dismantled in several ways, but if this is done without a special (tuning) key, the hammers are not touched, otherwise there is a risk of injury due to the fact that the string may rebound sharply.
The strings are still removed with a grinder, as well as with lever cutters. In the first case, this is done in one motion, in the second, each string is removed separately. Still, the safest way (albeit a long one) is the option with a tuning key.

They first unscrew the pegs, remove the strings, then dismantle the hammers, then proceed to the keys and the keyboard panel. This method will require more time and effort, but injury is excluded here, and this is important.
By the way, the string braid is made of brass or copper, therefore, for this part, as for a non-ferrous metal, you can get a certain amount when handing over to the point of secondary raw materials. Take your time to throw everything away when you take apart the piano.

After unscrewing the bar, proceed to removing the keys. Let's describe step by step the general stage of work on removing keys and cutting strings.
-
Get rid of the lower front panel: to do this, remove it from the internal latches.
-
Remove the wooden pedal bars.
-
In any of the above ways, cut the strings and get rid of the hammer mechanism. Only not the other way around, otherwise the strings will start to "shoot".
-
The upper strings are cut with extreme care: the process begins by raising the hammers using the lever on the side of the left pedal.
-
Next comes the dismantling of the keys and keypad, as well as the pedals. At the same time, the bed is supported so that it does not fall.
-
The back wall is disconnected with a crowbar.

But with a cast-iron stove, you can take your time - this is the heaviest part, and you can break it off just before you take it out. What else do the professionals advise? It is best to disassemble the piano when the instrument is in a horizontal position, it should be laid on the back wall.
You can skip the step of removing the strings - this step is only needed if you decide to take them to a collection point for non-ferrous metal, or decide to completely disassemble the piano for other reasons. Otherwise, you can simply unscrew the entire mechanism with a bar and a rudder (hammer mechanism).

Disassembly of the remaining parts
When it comes to disposing of an old piano, the final step in disassembling the instrument is to separate the frame from the rear wood panel. This action is performed after dismantling the cast iron bed. That is, the piano is placed on the back wall, first the sides are removed, and then the frame is separated from the rear wooden wall.
The cast iron frame weighs within one centner - this is the heaviest part of the piano. To carry it out, you can use the elevator, or find several loaders. It is usually handed over for scrap. Having disassembled the tool completely for parts, you can already safely take it to the landfill, or find a separate application for each part.

For a cast-iron panel and strings, you can help out money by handing over to a recycling center. Wooden bases can also be recycled, but often they are left for their own needs, for example, they light a fireplace or stove with them.
Polished wood (panel, lid) is suitable for the manufacture of furniture, partitions, shelves, various tables, and even make various decorative elements from it, including decorations. Smaller elements (loops, bolts) can be useful for repairs or the manufacture of other products.
In many cities and regional centers, there are special companies or brigades for the disposal of pianos and pianos. The fact is that nowadays electronic keyboard brothers are replacing these bulky musical instruments, and many want to get rid of outdated copies.

The service is quite widespread, so it is better to entrust the disposal to professionals - this way you will save time, and this is the safest way. But still, if such specialized teams are not available in your area, then our instructions will help you cope with the disposal of an unnecessary or outdated piano.
By the way, the instrument is disassembled not only in order to make it easier to take out. Disassembly is often required to clean the piano when the keys get stuck and sound different; to tighten the strings; for transportation or rearrangement to another place. Depending on the purpose, they do the disassembly: full or partial.

No one, even the most expensive electronic instrument, can ever compete with live sound!
Sergey, just respect, what wise words! I agree 100%.
