Weave an owl from newspaper tubes
Surely in every house there is an unnecessary couple of newspapers. With the help of newspaper tubes, you can make a wonderful decorative element for your interior. And no one will even guess what it is made of. Various baskets, key holders, caskets and trays can be weaved from paper tubes. After reading the article, you will learn how to weave a pencil owl yourself.
Preparation
To weave an owl, you need any thin paper, for example, old notebooks, magazines, but ideally if it is a newspaper. In addition, if you plan to paint the finished product, then the type of paper is not so important. Newspapers and magazines are often used without coloring, choosing illustrations on them according to the color scheme. To make a tube out of paper, you will need additionally:
- glue;
- spoke;
- brush;
- scissors;
- stationery knife.
Getting started, the paper is cut into thin strips, strictly in the direction of the grain. This improves the curl of it into a tube. You can find out the direction by tearing off the strip, and if the separation line is even, then it is correct. The second way to find out is to lightly wet the paper. When it gets wet, it will begin to curl up, and in which direction it will do it, in which it needs to be twisted.
The width of the stripes depends on the size of your craft. On average, this indicator varies from 5 to 10 cm. For a pencil owl, stripes 10 centimeters wide will be required.
Step-by-step master class
To twist a newspaper tube, you need to take a knitting needle at an angle of 30 degrees and wind the edge of a paper strip around its tip. The length of the tube will also depend on the angle at which you hold the knitting needle. Gently twist the paper onto the knitting needle, and the remaining free tip must be glued to the finished tube.After the glue dries, you can remove the tube from the spoke.
It often happens that the tube has one side thicker. Then you can resort to "building", that is, insert one tube into another, and glue the junction.
If coloring of the product is required, then it is possible to paint all the tubes already at this stage. But it is not recommended for beginners to do this due to the fact that at first it is difficult to calculate the required amount of material. It is better to paint over hard-to-reach places with a thin brush at the end of the work, and varnish at the end. Coloring of paper to match the color of wood is often used. Then the craft becomes more like a wooden one.
After a sufficient number of paper sticks have been prepared, you can start weaving a pencil owl.
- Three elongated tubes are taken (they can be made by connecting two ordinary ones) and crossed with each other, at an angle of 60 degrees. If you need a larger diameter, then 4 tubes and at an angle of 45 degrees. The places where the tubes connect to each other can be glued.
- A shape is placed at the center of the intersection, and another tube is added to it so that an isosceles triangle is obtained.
- Then we begin to bend counterclockwise, and this must be done so that the tubes touch the established shape. The angles at this time should remain the same.
- You need to weave until the desired height of the craft is obtained. When the tube begins to end, it can be extended with the help of another. As a result of the work, the remaining tip is cut off and tucked neatly under the bottom row.
- Next, we start making a decorative element for the product. To make the eyebrows of an owl, you will also need newspaper tubes. It is necessary to take two and bend, having previously moistened with water. Two more tubes must be made flat, having previously rolled them out, and braided around the bent ones.
- Thus, two identical parts are braided, interconnected, and the remains of the tubes are intertwined with a third flat one. This is how the bird's beak is formed. Eyes need to be woven from twisted flat tubes, smeared with glue. In order not to unwind, fix them tightly with an elastic band and wait until the glue is completely dry.
- When the owl's eyes and beak are ready, they can be glued to the body. In order for the elements to be securely fixed, it is advisable to place them under the press for 2-3 hours.
- The pencil is ready!

Recommendations
For beginners, it is better to use a newspaper to curl the elements of the craft, since they turn out to be very tough from office paper and are difficult to work with. More experienced craftsmen can even use cardboard for crafts!
For dyeing paper, you can use a water-based stain and PVA glue, iodine, hair dye, gouache. The main thing is to let the tubes dry well after painting.
