Do it yourself
We looked at a few ideas for plywood souvenirs, but did not talk about how to make them. There are 2 main ways: manually - with a jigsaw and with a laser.
Jigsaw
To get started, you need a certain set of tools: a manual or electric jigsaw, a set of files of various sizes, a hacksaw and a drill. Also, other materials will be needed for additional processing, such as sandpaper, varnish, etc.
You need to start by drawing a drawing on a plywood sheet.
This can be done using a carbon copy, a template, or by hand (if you have such an ability). Next, proceed to cutting out the details or pattern.
Of course, it is much more convenient to do this with an electric jigsaw, but it is possible to do it manually. After that, you need to make a final finish for aesthetics: sand (especially the edges) and varnish. If desired, you can decorate.
It is important to remember that before starting work, you need to carefully read the safety rules of the tool with which you prefer to work.
If this is your first time getting started with a jigsaw, then you need to find simple cutting patterns to practice a little. For example, consider making a napkin holder step by step.
This is a relatively simple craft, but it still requires some skill.
- We start by choosing a drawing. There are different types of napkin holders with all kinds of patterns, but we chose one of the simple ones, these are suitable for beginners.
- Next, we print this drawing and transfer it to a plywood sheet., suitable in format, in any way convenient for you: using a carbon copy, redrawing by hand, etc.
- Let's move on to cutting out the details. If you are using a manual jigsaw, then you need to start work first with a file or a hacksaw, and then continue with a jigsaw. With an electric jigsaw, things are easier, because with it the work goes much faster and safer. In our case, we cut out 3 parts according to the scheme: the bottom and 2 side parts. First, it is better to cut out small details, in our case it is a pattern.
- After cutting out the parts, you can start assembling and gluing them. Optionally, it can be additionally treated with varnish and paint.
With a laser
Making plywood souvenirs using laser cutting is much easier and faster than handcrafting. However, this requires a much higher cost. But if you are the lucky owner of such a device, then you can easily get down to work.
As in the previous paragraph, we start the work by choosing a drawing of the product you like (remember that you can draw it yourself or find a ready-made drawing). We will consider the work on the example of making a feeder.
- Let's prepare this drawing. It can be taken as a jpg image or modified in CorelDRAW.
- Next, we connect the laser device to the electricity.
- We load the circuit into the software on the computer for laser cutting and set the settings in the program for cutting plywood.
- We install the plywood sheet in the working area of the laser installation.
- You need to make sure everything is installed correctly. Some fixtures are much smaller in size, so sometimes parts will have to be placed on two sheets of plywood.
- Now we launch the program.
- We separate the cut out parts of the feeder from the base and glue the product as indicated in the diagram.
- Optionally, you can decorate the craft or leave it as it is. Laser-fired edges add some aesthetics, so no additional processing is required.
Of course, in order to make souvenirs from plywood, you need some skills and means, but if you learn a little, you can always make a gift to your loved ones with your own hands.
As soon as you learn how to make simple products from plywood, you can start more complex ones or try to make diagrams for cutting out parts yourself. Then your souvenirs will be a unique gift. It is worth showing a little imagination - and you will succeed!
