Many are familiar with the problem of finding keys before leaving the house. It would seem that they always lie in the same place, but every time when the time is especially "running out", they are not there, and you have to frantically look for them in bags, jacket pockets and lockers. An excellent solution in this case will be a plywood housekeeper, which will perform not only a practical, but also a decorative function.

What it is?

The plywood key holder is a functional home decor item for storing keys. Most often, it is placed near the entrance to the dwelling, so that it is more convenient to hang or put the keys upon returning home, or take them with you when going outside.

Species overview

Plywood key holders are desktop and wall-mounted. Let's consider each variety in more detail.

  • Desktop option can be installed on an open shelf, bedside table or console table. As a rule, they are made in the form of a house, a simple box or whatnot. The advantage of this type is its stability - it will not tip over, even if you put a weighty bunch of keys inside. However, in a narrow hallway, where you cannot put any furniture, it is impossible to place a table key holder.
  • The wall key keeperon the contrary, it is intended precisely for such premises, where every square meter is worth its weight in gold. After all, even if all the walls are occupied, it can be hung on the front door.

    The wall key holder can be closed and open. The closed type is something like a small locker, the open one is like a coat hanger. In any case, the wall accessory is equipped with hooks on which keychains and single keys are placed.

    Design options

    The housekeeper, like any other element of decor, should act as a stylish addition to the interior of the room. Pay attention to the following design decisions.

    • In a nautical style. Such accessories decorate the hallways as well as possible, as they symbolize the spirit of wandering, travel, adventure. And there are a great many variations in the execution of the sea housekeeper: here and a wall cabinet with a glass door, decorated with miniature anchors, lifebuoys, steering wheels; and a simple shelf with a decor in the form of waves, and even an entire port town, skillfully carved out of plywood and painted with acrylics. Such key holders can be safely decorated with shells brought from overseas countries.
    • Steampunk. A style that originated in the 80s of the last century and was inspired by the steam energy of the 19th century. In simple terms, the style of steampunk combines Victorian England and the details of the mechanisms of steam engines. A key holder made in this style will be decorated with various gears, cogwheels, springs and other similar mechanical attributes, necessarily aged (naturally or artificially). The accessory can be supplemented with a wall clock, the mechanism of which is partially or completely visible.
    • Shabby chic. Literally translated as "shabby shine". Characteristic features of the style: coloring in light, pastel shades (white, light pink, light blue, ivory, soft mint), artificial aging, decoration with decor from roses, angels. To create a housekeeper in this style, choose antique forged crochet hooks, paint them in one of the suggested colors (along with the entire structure), add decorative painting. The wall version can be styled like an old cuckoo clock, a birdhouse or a picture, the desktop version can look like a jewelry box.
    • Modern version. I mean a laconic wall panel or a simple box with or without a door. No special decorations are required - it is enough to maintain the style of the interior of the apartment.

    Selection Tips

    It would seem, well, what can be difficult in choosing the right plywood housekeeper? However, there are nuances that need to be taken into account.

    • The choice of a suitable model should be determined by the purpose of use. If you are going to hang only light keys from the apartment and the car on it, you can limit yourself to a wall plate with hooks and the chosen decor. If the keychains are heavy, cumbersome, then it is best to choose a desktop model or a closed wall cabinet.
    • If you have children, it will be useful to provide each hook with an inscription about which keys are hanging on it, or to make name plates so that the child, leaving the house, does not inadvertently grab your bunch, on which, in addition to the keys to the house, there are also keys to the study, etc.
    • If there are often strangers in your home (couriers for the delivery of goods, employees of cleaning companies), then for safety reasons you can choose a key cabinet-locker with a locking mechanism.

    How to do it yourself?

    Let's look at two do-it-yourself plywood key holder workshops.

    Option number 1: simple wall key holder with hooks

    First, prepare the following:

    • plywood sheet;
    • hooks and screws for fastening them;
    • jigsaw for cutting blanks;
    • acrylic paints, varnish;
    • sandpaper;
    • spatula / palette knife;
    • putty for wood;
    • glue;
    • brushes;
    • drill.

    Now you need to prepare drawings of future blanks. Plywood is a rather malleable material, and it is not difficult to cut any contour out of it. It can be a cat, bird, house, tree or any other figurine.

    So, the drawings, materials and tools are ready. Getting started:

    • cut out a paper blank;
    • we transfer it to a sheet of plywood using a simple pencil;
    • we cut out the necessary parts with a jigsaw;
    • we carefully grind the edges;
    • if suddenly chips have formed on the workpiece - and this sometimes happens when using old plywood - apply putty on the wood with a palette knife or spatula, wait until it dries, and sand it with sandpaper;
    • then make indentations for the hangers and drill holes for the screws that will hold the hooks;
    • cover the workpiece with acrylic paint, wait for it to dry;
    • if you are planning to decorate your housekeeper in some way (decoupage, painting, mosaic, etc.), it's time to do it;
    • attach the hooks to the key holder, hang it on the wall.

    Option number 2: a closed housekeeper.

    Prepare the following materials:

    • plywood sheet;
    • drawing of details of the house;
    • sandpaper;
    • fasteners for doors;
    • self-tapping screws;
    • hooks;
    • acrylic paints, varnish;
    • drill, jigsaw.

              Manufacturing steps:

              • transfer the drawing to plywood by tracing its contours with a simple pencil;
              • sand the details;
              • drill holes where hooks and doors should be attached;
              • assemble the house;
              • screw on the hooks;
              • install doors, a lock (if provided);
              • paint the key holder in the selected color, after the paint has dried, you can start decorating.

              Especially advanced craftsmen can try using a plywood laser cutting machine and create a unique carved product.
