How to make a wire sculpture with your own hands?
Everyone can make a sculpture out of wire. Such products will be appropriate in the garden and outdoors, in summer and on New Years. We will tell you how to make figurines of a person and some animals with your own hands, and what to look for when making.
Tools and materials
Wire is a very malleable material. For this she fell in love with modern sculptors. It can be used to make light, airy sculptures, and hard, massive and monumental ones.
Therefore, working with it does not require special tools. To make small tabletop sculptures, we need:
- wire of different diameters;
- pliers;
- nippers or scissors for metal;
- round-nose pliers (but you can do without them).
If your sculpture will stand on a pedestal, then you will need:
- wooden block;
- screws;
- screwdriver.
And if you want cladding, then they will come to the rescue:
- plasticine;
- metal foil;
- epoxy resin;
- clay;
- gypsum;
- for large sculptures, a chain-link mesh is suitable.
For the manufacture of plaster casings make a figure out of plasticine and cover with liquid silicone. Then wait until dry and remove the resulting silicone matrix. Then fill it with liquid plaster. Calculate the joints in advance.
As for street sculptures, they usually do not have such cladding. But the wire is thicker, which is difficult to bend with your hands.
Therefore, to make such figures you will need:
- gas torch or blowtorch;
- sledgehammer or hammer;
- ticks;
- welding machine and electrodes;
- primer, paint and finishing accessories.
We want the sculpture to be flat. To do this, you need to bend according to the template. Therefore, regardless of the size, we need:
- paper;
- pencil;
- ruler.
The template must be made according to the size of the sculpture, so large shapes need large paper or a sheet of wallpaper on the back of which you can draw.
Making a template can be simplified if you draw it on a computer and print it out.
Next, we start manufacturing. This is especially interesting for children. But this business is not alien to adults either.
You can come up with a figurine yourself or use a ready-made solution and bring something of your own into it. Anyway, here is a list of the best ideas for making wire sculptures.
Interesting ideas
For beginners, making a complex sculpture will not be possible. That's why better to start with something simple... For example, from a tabletop sculpture of a man.
Here is a step-by-step manufacturing diagram.
- Start with the legs. Pick up 2 fairly long pieces of wire, one for each leg. On the feet, if desired, make a loop to fasten the figurine to the pedestal. Then connect the legs together and form the pelvic part of our little man. The length of the wire should be enough for the spine, neck and head.
- Legs can be made from 2 twisted wires. Then, when you connect them into a basin, you will have 4 ends. Two of them will be needed on the spine and head, and from the other 2 you will need to make hands.
- For making a head make a large loop and orient it correctly. Then attach your arms.
- Give the person the pose you want. If the limbs are too long, they can be cut off. Fine wire can be used to form brushes and fingers and then attach them to glue.
- You can leave it as it is if you like. Can you cover this frame with plasticine, plaster and others.
Consider another option for making a man.
- Legs and torso are made from one piece. Wire route: left leg - left pelvis - right pelvis - left shoulder - right shoulder - left pelvis - right pelvis - right leg. The writing is difficult, but it looks like an hourglass with legs.
- Both arms are made at the same time from a long wire. Bend it with the letter "M" and attach it to the body with a thin wire or fishing line.
- Make a head from the remnants of the wire and attach it to the body.
- Further, the production of the sculpture does not differ from the first method.

Such a sculpture will require cladding, unless you are a fan of the abstract art genre.
Using such methods, you can make figurines not only of a person, but also animal... For example, cats, dogs, bears and others. Only the proportions will differ. But they must have 4 limbs. What about other animals?
Let's make for a change scorpion figurine. It has 8 legs, 2 claws and a tail. Accordingly, you need to make it differently. We need 14 pieces of wire 20 cm long. The diameter should be such that it can be easily bent by hand.
The manufacturing technique includes a number of steps.
- Add 6 line segments together and find the center.
- Next, we take one bar from this bundle and wind it onto the rest. You need to start from the center.
- When the wire ends, take another. We wind it up, while continuing the turns of the first. We do this until there are only 2 straight wires left.
- We twist them together from one end. This will be the tail. We bend him like a real scorpion.
- Take the next 8 pieces and fix them on the body of the scorpion. The body should be centered.
- We wrap the wire extreme from the tail around the body in a criss-cross pattern, and take out the ends for the first segment and direct it down. This should be done all 8 times. Ideally, we get a carapace (the top of the carapace) and 16 wire ends.
- We connect these tips by 2. These will be the legs. We bend them so that the figure stands steadily.
- We take 4 wires from the front and twist them in two. These will be claws.
- Cut the remaining 2 wires. This will be the mouth.

The scorpion figurine is ready.
If you want to do street sculpture, you need to use thick steel wire. It bends much worse, so the bends need to be heated with a blowtorch.
But the level of detail in such sculptures is usually lower. If the wire has been annealed, then flexible problems will not arise.
For example, let's make a shape of a New Year's deer.
- How to draw a silhouette deer on the right scale without antlers. Need a side view. To make the horns, draw a sketch separately, while the view should be from the front.
- We will make the head, torso and legs separately. Divide our template into these 3 elements using the lines.
- To start let's make the head. We cut the bar to the desired length and bend it.
- To make the figure three-dimensional, you need fill the inner space. To do this, weld on many ovals in cross section, which will give shape. They are made from the same wire.
- Torso is done in a similar way. First the contour, then the ovals, and all this is welded together.
- Legs slightly different. In a deer, they are semicircular, and the flat part is directed inward. Otherwise, there are no differences.
- We connect all the parts between themselves. For strength, we weld the wire along the entire body.
- We make and weld horns.
The sculpture of the New Year's deer is ready. Since it will be on the street, it will need to be primed and painted. Such an art object will look great next to a street tree. You can leave the figure as a frame or make a cladding. Here everyone will decide for himself.
If you want a glowing sculpture, wrap the frame with a garland. In our case, it can be hidden with stretch film. It is transparent, but when fastened, folds will appear on it, which will hide unnecessary elements. Then the deer will glow evenly.
So we looked at the coolest ideas for wire sculptures. Of course, professionals will be able to do more complex things, but for beginners to implement this is already very good. Do not limit yourself and strive for the best.
Recommendations
It is difficult to give advice in creativity, so we will only limit ourselves to technical issues.
- Correct pattern Is a guarantee of success. Never neglect it, even in simple work.
- Before work the wire usually needs to be straightened... This is done in a vise or on an anvil with hammer blows. It is desirable that the hammer be made of wood (mallet), or you need to hit through a plank. But don't overdo it - the bar should remain round.
- The wire can be aluminum, copper, brass, steel and any you wish. The main thing is to consider the way of fixing different elements. If welding will be used, steel or, in extreme cases, aluminum should be taken. Copper works well for soldering. And any one is suitable for twisting.
- When working, keep in mind that some the wire may bend back. Therefore, loops and folds must be made smaller than on the template. The amount of bend depends on the material and is determined empirically.
- Try to the joints were directed in one direction. Avoid burrs and sharp edges on them.
- Do not apply too much force when bending. The bar may burst, and the ends may hit the hands with great force. Take care of your health. If the wire does not bend, this place needs to be warmed up until a red color appears.
- If there is no torch or blowtorch, You can also warm up the wire on a household gas stove. But this method is only suitable for making small table figurines.
- Wooden pedestals need to be covered with paint or stain and then varnished.
- Be sure to observe safety precautions. Hard steel wire should be handled with gloves and goggles.
