Making a ship and a boat from a vegetable marrow
Fruit and vegetable crafts are a great way to introduce your child to natural materials and cutting techniques.... Of course, care should be taken when working with sharp objects, so be careful not to leave your toddler alone with knives. Today we will make a simple and fun toy from autumn gifts - zucchini. Many in the country have an extra copy for needlework, and city dwellers can easily buy a vegetable in a store at any time of the year.
Preparation
First, we will stock up on everything you need. First of all, we need the zucchini itself.
- For decoration and details, you can use other vegetables: carrots, cabbage, potatoes, onions. Natural flowers, cones, various twigs - everything that you can find in the park or in the garden will also be used. Kitchen supplies are also useful - feel free to experiment with spices, cereals, herbs.
- To fasten the elements together, stock up on toothpicks. Skewers, threads, foil can also come in handy.
- For the actual work on the shape, choose a knife that is suitable for the size. Generally, a vegetable peeler, small and pointed, does the best job. Cooking utensils can help create drawings and interesting details. Bring a vegetable peeler, fork, teaspoon with you.
Prepare a place where you will study with your child. It is better to cover the table with oilcloth so as not to get dirty, or put a cutting board. It is helpful to have a towel or rag on hand to wipe off any leaking juice and hands.
Boat making ideas
In order to prepare everything you need in advance, it is better to immediately choose an idea for a zucchini ship. It can be a very small single-sail ship, or it can be a whole steamer with pipes and windows made of vegetables. In many ways, the look of your fall craft will depend on the size, color, and shape of your squash.
Below are three simple options that you can easily and the first time follow with your child, following simple instructions.
With cabbage
One of the most uncomplicated and funniest boats. A preschooler can also cope with it, if, for example, you need to complete a craft in kindergarten. You will need a squash, a small head of cabbage, gulliver's toothpicks, or sushi sticks. Of the tools, you can limit yourself to a knife and a spoon.
First, cut the top of the vegetable marrow lengthwise. Don't cut too much to avoid making a mistake - it is better to mark the edge of the bead with the tip of a knife and lean on it.
Then you need to take out the pulp with a spoon so that the walls are quite thick and keep their shape well.
To make the toy more stable, you can also slightly cut the lower part, like a platform.
If you wish, you can cut with a knife or draw with a sharp object on the sides of the windows or lines of "boards".
Now carefully separate several leaves from the cabbage head without tearing them. Pinned on a stick on both sides, we stick it into the bottom of the ship. You can additionally trim the leaves to a triangular or square shape, or you can simply choose “sails” of different sizes.
To decorate the boat, you can cut small flags from carrots or potatoes and attach them to the tops of the masts. Thread or twine can easily imitate ropes. With a share of dexterity, it will even come out to depict an anchor from vegetables and attach it to the board with a toothpick. Onion rings will turn into lifebuoys, and if you stick five or six toothpicks in such a ring in a circle, you get a beautiful steering wheel.
If desired, fill the board with a team of plasticine figures or ready-made toys, for example, from the Lego set.
With flowers
Girls may like the idea of making a beautiful ship for the princess. To make the toy truly magical and luxurious, we use flowers as decoration.
Elements from bright vegetables look very interesting: carrots and beets. For work, we need a thin small knife, scissors, and a spoon. If you have special cutters for cutting vegetables or dough, use them.
Use the knife to shape the squash into a ship shape. With a spoon, select the pulp and seeds, line the bottom.
Make sails using colored paper or cabbage leaves and sticks.
Now you need to cut the flowers. Cut the carrots into thin round slices. With the help of scissors we make petals or use a ready-made mold for cutting vegetables. We attach each flower to the sides of the ship with a toothpick. Add parsley leaves or any herbs from the garden to these.
For beautiful roses, we need beets and a peeler.
The juice of this root vegetable is very persistent, protect clothing and work surface from contamination.
Cut off a thin strip from the tuber. In order for it to be elastic, you can first boil the beets slightly and cool. Roll the strip into a tube and add a few more petal layers. We fasten the finished rose with a toothpick and decorate with dill or cilantro. The same buds can be made from carrots, apple peels, or orange peel. With cucumber or herbarium leaves, the flowers look very natural and pretty.
Pirate
To make a pirate ship, we repeat the basic steps step by step. But such a craft should have a different decor. When the base with the sails is ready, you need to give it an appropriate look. For this we will use the most famous symbol - the Jolly Roger flag.
If you need a craft for school tomorrow morning, but you don't have the energy and time, you can just draw a skull and bones on paper, cut out the sails and fix it. But it is much more interesting to do it with your own hands together with the child.
Let's take a dark vegetable, such as beets, as a basis. Cut neatly lengthwise into thick strips. Let's give them the shape of a rectangle or a pennant.
Now you need to cut out the skull and bones from the light color of the material. It can be potatoes or carrots. In order not to be mistaken, draw a shape in advance with a felt-tip pen.
Using toothpicks we attach the drawing to the flag and carefully cut off the protruding edges. Do not overdo it with the thickness and number of fasteners, otherwise the vegetable plate may crack.
Bumpers made of matches stuck around the perimeter look beautiful. Optionally, you can tie them with twine in the manner of a rope.
DIY boats
You don't always need a big ship. Sometimes, due to a young age or lack of time, a simple boat may be needed. It all depends on the task and the topic of the craft.
Regular
The difference between a boat and a ship is the way of movement. Most often they swim with the help of oars.
To depict a rowing boat, take a small zucchini or zucchini, give it the shape of a floating craft. To do this, cut off the top and take out the pulp.
We use toothpicks or sticks as oars, depending on the size of the base. Cut out oval or rectangular blades from the upper cut part of a vegetable marrow or other vegetable. They should not be too thin, because we will string them on the ends of the oars.
Now we carefully cut out the oarlocks in the sides of the boat. To do this, you can use the rod from the handle. So that the rower has a place to sit, we make a bench from a piece of vegetable or several matches. Insert the paddles, and the craft is ready!
Underwater
To make a sub, it is best to use a straight vegetable with rounded edges.
Cut out round windows on both sides, carefully take out the pulp with a teaspoon. We make a screw from carrots or potatoes. It is convenient to cut it out of the mug with scissors. You can also use a toothpick to attach three or four "droplets" like blades.
An excellent periscope will come out of a cocktail straw, and a team of plasticine or ready-made figurines can be placed in the windows.
Useful Tips
- Try to pick vegetables and fruits that which do not emit too much juice... Tomatoes and kiwis, for example, will not hold their shape.
- It is also better to give preference to the material, which will not fade for a long time. Otherwise, the craft may go limp before the exhibition. Dense vegetables and fruits are ideal: carrots, potatoes, beets, apple peels, orange and lemon peel. The berries in the shell will also last quite a long time, grapes or gooseberries will come off as decoration.
- Rely on the shape and size of the vegetable you have at your fingertips... Its outlines themselves will tell you how the final result should look like.
- To make it easier to cut figures from vegetables and fruits, you can lightly scald with boiling water... This will make the flesh more elastic and will not crack from piercing.
- Remove excess juice from the elements in time, otherwise, it can stain adjacent surfaces and spoil the appearance.
- Apples and potatoes can be sprinkle with lemon juice or citric acid solution so that they do not darken from oxidation.
