You can make a gorgeous panel from dried flowers, build an unusual composition. Dried flowers are used to create postcards, bouquets and even decorations. Such material requires careful attention to itself, since dried stems are usually very fragile and tender. How to prepare natural material for work, as well as the use of dried flowers, will be discussed in this article.

Material preparation

For those who are engaged in creative handicrafts, dried plants can be a very good material for creating original crafts. Such raw materials can be purchased in a store or prepared yourself.

When harvesting plants, a number of nuances should be taken into account.

  • The timing of their procurement may fluctuate depending on the type of plant. Usually the period from the beginning of spring to the end of autumn is chosen for this. Material for dried flowers can be collected in the park, in the country or in the forest.
  • It is important to harvest plants in dry weather. The best time to harvest is late in the morning, when the dew is no longer on the leaves.
  • When collecting, spoiled, damaged or insect-eaten plants should be thrown away, they are not suitable for work. It is worth choosing beautiful specimens with well-developed petals and stem.
  • It is recommended to dry the workpieces in the air, in a ventilated place. It is important that no sunlight falls on the flowers, otherwise they will change their colors and become faded.
  • When harvesting, take into account the color gamut of plants. It should be remembered that after drying, the red buds will become darker, and yellowness will appear on the light petals. Blue, orange, pink and purple petals usually do not change color when properly dried.

Proper preparation and drying of raw materials is the key to the preservation of plants of their appearance and color.

There are several techniques for drying plants.

  • Under the press. This method can be called the simplest. It is enough to place a flat plant under a press or put it in a folder for herbariums.
  • Hot express drying. One of the drying options is using the microwave. It is recommended to turn on the microwave oven for a few minutes and dry the selected specimens. To prevent them from drying out, it is recommended to place a container of water next to the plants.
  • Hanging bouquets. Drying is done by tying spikelets and stems into small bunches and then hanging them. The bouquets are hung in such a way that the flowers are at the bottom.
  • By volumetric drying. In this case, it is better to lay out a large plant in one layer on paper. They also dry individual parts of plants, for example, buds, flowers or petals. To do this, you should prepare in advance a container filled with a loose substance that absorbs moisture well. It can be salt, semolina or flour. Flowers are placed at the bottom of the container with the bud down, covered with a desiccant, covered with a lid and left in a dry, warm place for 3-4 days.

Dried flowers are stored in sealed glass or metal containers in a dark place. Do not put the jars in the sun, otherwise it will lead to burnout. This also applies to finished compositions, paintings, panels.
