During rest and sleep, proper head support is important so that the muscles of the cervical spine can relax. In this article, we will help you figure out how to correctly determine the size of the orthopedic pillow and choose such a sleeping element.

Standard parameters

The sizes of the orthopedic pillows depend on who they are intended for. Standard options for medium-sized adults are pillows with a length of 0.4 meters and a width of 0.6 meters. For people with a larger configuration, it is better to choose 0.5 by 0.7 meters. The exception is pregnant women: they should choose special specimens designed for their position. Well, baby pillows are chosen based on the age of the child:

  • from 1.5 to 3 years - these are pillows 20x30 with a height of 3 cm;
  • from 3 to 7 years size 35x50 is suitable with a height of 5 cm;
  • from 7 years it is worth choosing products measuring 40x60 cm with a height of 8 cm.

Thus, adult orthopedic products for sleeping under the head are sewn with a length of 40-50 cm and a width of 60-80 cm, and for children they are 20-40 cm long and 30-60 cm wide... Make sure that the pillow is not larger than the bed, but you should not buy too small. Height is also of great importance: sleeping on a pillow that is too low makes you want to put something under your head and, as a rule, your hands stretch under your ear.

After such a rest, you may not feel your shoulders, you will feel discomfort in your back, and will not let go of the pain in the cervical spine for a long time. Sleeping on a pillow that is too high will also not bring satisfaction because the chin will begin to touch the chest, and the cervical vertebra will be constantly in a tense state. You will feel a pain in your neck when you wake up.

How to determine?

Experts recommend choosing products that only fit the head and neck. The correct position of the spine is ensured by the height of the pillow, so this parameter is of great importance for healthy sleep. Before determining what height of the orthopedic pillow is suitable for a person, you need to know his favorite position during sleep. For those who prefer to sleep on their back, the low options with a height of 6 to 10 cm. If a person is used to sleeping on his side, then higher products are needed - not less than 12 cm.

Sleeping on your stomach is not recommended, but if you cannot sleep differently, then a flat pillow will come in handy. There are models with memory effect in the orthopedic series - choose them for sleeping on your stomach. However, among the models of orthopedic pillows there are also those with adjustable height. These are ideal pieces for those who prefer to sleep in different positions. For different poses, you can easily find the right height. These pillows can be quickly customized, but they are quite expensive.

Most people sleep on pillows with a height of 10 to 14 cm, but this figure is different for each.

In the lateral position during sleep, the height of the roller should be commensurate with the height of the shoulder. To correctly determine this indicator, you need to measure the size of the shoulder or the distance between the shoulders. This is done as follows.

  • In the first case, you need to find a point at the base of the neck and walk with a measuring tape to the edge of the shoulder. If the mattress is soft, then add 1-2 centimeters to the resulting figure for pressing. For example, if you got 10 cm, then you need a pillow 11-12 cm high.
  • In the second case, measure the width of the shoulders and the circumference of the neck. The resulting indicator for the distance between the shoulders is divided by 2 and ¼ part is subtracted from the result of the neck circumference. Thus, the height of the roller under the head is determined.

Those with too wide shoulders will need to wrap a towel around the pillow to increase the height. Usually manufacturers offer products with a height of 6 to 16 cm. If you have determined that you need a higher cushion for sleeping, then artificially increase this figure. It will take time to get used to sleeping on an orthopedic product with the right parameters. But this is a matter of habit, and only patience and the right selection criteria will help you to ensure that the spine is in the right position.

How to choose?

When choosing an orthopedic pillow for sleep, take into account the following criteria:

  • the purpose of the product (for the daily rest of a child, teenager, adult, for pregnant women and patients with osteochondrosis, for travel, etc.);
  • pillow shape;
  • the size and height of the roller;
  • filler.

You cannot buy the same orthopedic pillow as from friends, because this is an individual thing.... Its dimensions will depend on the size of your body (taking into account height, weight, neck circumference and distance between the shoulders), the elasticity of the mattress and the position in which you prefer to sleep.

To choose the right orthopedic pillow, you can focus on the following recommendations:

  • for children and adolescents, choose products 20 by 30 cm and 40 by 50 cm;
  • for people of average build - 40 by 60 cm;
  • for adults of large build - 50 by 70 cm.

Remember that neither the shoulders nor the torso should rest on the pillow: it is only intended to support the head and cervical region. Models with bolsters or shoulder indentations should be selected based on the anatomical features of the body.

You should not pick up a pillow by standing against a wall and placing the product under your head. So pillows are not "tried on", because there is a high probability of not getting into the desired size option. For the correct selection of the roller, you will need a mattress that is as similar as possible to the one you use on a daily basis. In large specialized salons there are all conditions for lying down and “trying on” an orthopedic pillow.Take this opportunity, do not hesitate and do it. There is one more nuance: the pillow is not selected for tactile sensations, because the main criterion for selection is the height of the product.

It is impractical to buy a pillow in order to use it in only one position. It is necessary to choose such an option so that the bolster under the head is comfortable in all positions. Therefore, try the product in different positions. If you lie on your back, then the head should be level and free, but not thrown back, and the chin should not rest against the chest.

When lying laterally, the cervical muscles should not strain. The neck itself becomes an even continuation of the spine, the shoulders remain outside the pillow.

The length of the pillow should correspond to your circular rotations: if you roll over, it should remain under you. Of course, you need to select a model taking into account the composition of the contents: poorly ventilated materials will not allow you to sleep well, your head and neck will constantly sweat. Of no small importance is what the pillow cover is made of.

Pain in the head, discomfort in the cervical region and in the spine, fatigue and a broken state: all this is experienced by people who cannot get enough sleep due to an incorrectly selected pillow. We hope our information will help you make the right choice that will provide you with a healthy and long sleep.
