Handicrafts, the so-called hand-made, have been at the peak of popularity for several years. Handmade knitted hats, mittens and sweaters fly like hot cakes, despite sometimes being expensive.

Interior items knitted or crocheted are no less popular. These are toys, and blankets, and blankets, and, of course, pillows of various shapes, colors and sizes.

Advantages and disadvantages

Hand knitted pillows have both pros and cons. Several factors can be attributed to the benefits.

  • Hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly thanks to the yarn from which they are made. They are suitable even for those whose skin is very sensitive.

  • The yarn can have different thicknesses, therefore the products are obtained with different densities. Due to the fact that there are a large number of fillers, the softness of the pillow can also be adjusted.

  • They have an attractive appearance.

  • They bring coziness, a feeling of warmth and light to the room.

  • Combines with almost any style in the interior.

  • They can be one-color or multi-colored, depending on the manufacturer's imagination. They can also be smooth or textured.

  • It is possible to combine fabric and knitted elements in one product. The pillow can be emphasized functional (smooth, without unnecessary embellishments) or, conversely, decorative, created to accent the interior.

  • With minimal knitting skills, they can be created by hand.

Yarn products also have disadvantages:

  • the most textured, spectacular patterns will not allow the pillow to be used for its intended purpose - for sleeping, since it is uncomfortable to lie on it;

  • woolen pillows are not suitable for people with sensitive skin, this material is highly allergenic;

  • it is difficult to wash such products, especially those in which the cover cannot be removed, therefore dust, moisture accumulate in them, fungus and mold may appear;

  • knocking out dust from them is also difficult, since there is a possibility of damaging the structure of the yarn fabric.

Species overview

Knitted or crocheted pillows can have absolutely any shape, size and color.

By product type

Conventionally, all types of knitted pillows can be divided into:

  • interior;

  • intended for sleep;

  • toys.

The former can be associated with the use of a variety of complex patterns, have an unusual texture and decorative elements - buttons, bows, large beads made of wood, glass or plastic. They are not intended for sleeping, but only for decorating the interior - sofas, armchairs, window sills and more.

Since their function is only to lay beautifully, they are not as susceptible to pollution as the models on which they sleep.

Often, removable knitted covers are created for cushions so that they can be removed and washed or cleaned.

The pattern with which the canvas will be connected is chosen depending not only on the purpose of the product, but also on the thickness of the thread. Most often they use braids, arans (bizarre weaves of all kinds of harnesses), as well as patterns in which the front and back loops alternate, due to which uniform stripes, squares, rhombuses and even circles are obtained on the canvas. Pillows-knots look very nice, the pattern on which is created as a result of a complex interlacing of plaits.

As for pillows designed specifically for sleeping, knitted covers should be smooth. For the design of such models, a scarf, rice or pearl knitting is suitable (if we talk about products knitted on knitting needles). As for crocheting, those that are tied with ordinary single crochets, with one or two crochets, without adding a large number of openwork elements will be good. Tunisian weaving looks spectacular. Pillowcases, knitted from the motives of the "grandmother's square", are very beautiful, but it is not always convenient to sleep on them.

Pillow toys are intended primarily for children. The guys are happy to play with knitted hedgehogs, bears, hares, cats and puppies. However, some people create stunning toys that can decorate any space. Interior toy is a rapidly developing trend in needlework.

By material

Knitting threads can be of very different thicknesses. The density of the fabric, the choice of pattern depends on this (the one that looks good on thin yarn may look unprofitable when tied with thick threads). For beginners, it is better to train on thicker yarn products. First of all, thanks to the large diameter, the knitting process will go much faster, and it is on this type of yarn that simple patterns like rice or pearl knitting look impressive, and the alternation of front and back loops looks more textured.

As for the type of yarn, the most popular are acrylic, cotton, bamboo, various mixed threads, possibly with a slight addition of wool.

It is not recommended to use pure wool for two reasons: high allergy and a tendency to strong shrinkage after washing, even in cold water.

Knitted yarns are good for making bolsters and cuddles. It is elastic and stretches well, which means that products made from it will retain their original appearance for a long time.

Weed yarn is extremely popular for decorating children's toys. Small flaws in knitting are completely invisible on it, and because of its interesting and original texture, it is ideal for knitting "wool" from animals. "Grass" looks good in combination with threads of any color and thickness. And also children invariably love plush yarn and products made from it, because it is incredibly soft and pleasant to the touch - silky, tender, warm.

A few years ago, very thick yarn gained popularity, from which it is supposed to be knitted either with knitting needles 20 or more, or by hand. Such pillows look very impressive, both in combination with a similar knitted blanket, and by themselves. Another plus is the ability to knit such a pillowcase in literally an hour and a half.

Design options

It is difficult even to imagine how many design options for knitted pillows exist today. In the amigurumi technique alone, you can create, it seems, all known animals - from a cow to a fox. The flower-shaped pillows are incredibly beautiful, most often they are crocheted from multi-colored petal motifs. In the center, the "petals" are connected by a large button, which can also be tied with threads.

Donut pillows, including knitted ones, are very popular. They are created using a crochet hook, but some can knit both sides of a circle with knitting needles. The filler for such a pillow is elastic so that the donut is round. The same applies to any other cushions in the shape of a circle or oval, for example, pumpkin, sun, apple. Elastic holofiber or synthetic fluff is perfect for stuffing.

Series of pillows look beautiful. For example, 2 square, 2 round, roller, kept in the same colors and patterns. They can match the shade of the furniture on which they lie, or, conversely, contrast sharply with it.

Christmas pillows, although relevant only month of the year, are very popular both as gifts and as purchases for the home. Stars, Christmas trees, Santa Claus, deer, even a sleigh - all this can be knitted and crocheted.

Selection Tips

When deciding on how to decorate a room, one should take into account not only personal preferences, but also the objective living conditions: the presence of small children, pets, the possibility of frequent washing of rapidly contaminating products, and much more.

It is better to choose models with removable knitted covers so that you can clean them separately.

If we are talking about purchasing a pillow-toy with a complex shape - a lion, a tractor or a shell, then you need to think about how the product will be washed. When making your own, you should choose a filler that is not afraid of an automatic machine.

Beautiful examples

Now let's admire some interesting options for knitted pillows:

  • a pillow with pompom flowers is a great idea for decorating a room;

  • simple but effective New Year's models;
  • a laborious and very beautiful product will become a bright accent in the interior;
  • a cute knitted dog will not leave anyone indifferent;
  • a funny family of owls will take root in every home.
